As a very young man, I was, inspired and motivated by Vincent. I am an artist who has suffered from a mental illness. I have suffered from depression and survivors guilt. I turned to art to cope with my loss of my family. I became an orphan at 10. My grandparents raised nurtured and raised me. I later became involved with the Franciscan Fathers of California in assisting them with art projects. They helped me in coping with my life. I found peace in living in a monastery. I personally know what it is like to be creative and different. My art has always been my communication with this world.

I can sometimes agree that some scenes were unnecessary and that he mabye sometimes walked the story didn't evolve. I guess also that im just not really use to the format which they were filming in, but no one can deny the heart breaking story that is portrayed in this movie. This movie takes you on the journey of what actually happened with Vincent, and actually even corrects things that are wrong about him. Vincent was not mad he was a man who saw the true beauty and pain of the world an showed it through his panting, his chose of color to how he framed the scenes he went beyond what was required of a painter. His skills in painting are not something to you are simply given, you learn them and once you learn them you break what you learn to try an advance it even further, the people who made this man life a living hell deserve no sympathy but this man he deserves all the love and sympathy from the generation of artist he had inspired by his work.

Wouldn’t it be cool to see him be played as the hobgoblin. It could be a callback to when he was the green goblin in the Sam Raimi movies. And plus, idk I want to see him as another crazy villain. Given that Willem Dafoe just won the Best Actor prize for this at the Venice Film Festival and he should still have some passion behind him after almost finally winning last year for "The Florida Project', I think he's in a good position to win this year. As long as WB doesn't spend a fortune on a Bradley Cooper campaign, also.

LOVE Vincent van Gogh's birth name is Vincent Willem. How beautiful!

I just saw this film at a screening. Firstly I should say, many, many people walked out. But don’t be fooled. These people were impatient and naive to the slow unfolding sunflower that this beautiful film was. The remaining core lovers of film and art remained, and discussion was full afterwards in the corridors and the foyer outside. People hunched over tables debating what they had felt. The imagery at the beginning is expressive and lost, like a young painter in search of meaning. The handheld point of views of VG are composed of downward angles and then looking up to those who surround him, he is young and adventurous, throwing himself (literally) into nature. And then when he paints, it is still and this stillness is deafening. The focus to the paint brush and the calm is like a weight lifting. Clarity. The yellow filters on the backdrops are like paintings, each walk to the next painting draws you away from the noise of modern day and into a beautiful landscape almost untouched. We live in a world where everything must be given now, NOW, but here it is slowly revealed, teased, and then beautifully translated through his work and Defoe’s performance, something that the walk-outs failed to see. Overall, beautiful film that celebrates his work and also examines mental illness with such truth and emotional depth, we experience his anxiety and depression process in looping arcs of visuals and sound. This gives the effect of loss of self and control, irrational thinking. Stunning performances all round but a nod to the cinematography for conveying an artists journey from noise to focus. 8/10

Shame it feels like this film is overlooked due to the meme. Although its a smaller production this is one of the best films about Van Gogh. Willem Dafoe plays such an interesting portrayal of Vincent. I'm Dutch and dont care he is not played by a Dutch actor.

I enjoy a lot of Dafoe's work, can't wait to see it.. it is seeming he was born to potray the role of this amazing and troubled painter. I hope he finally receives the Oscar he deserves.
