What kind of company considers a resignation email final or even legal ? That would only be the beginning of the resignation procedure. There would be a conversation first, about the motivation for this resignation. Then there would be HR taking care of the legal procedures. And of course if meanwhile the email turns out to be fake the resignation procedure would be ended. Can you imagine getting your coworkers fired at will simply by writing an email ?

OP says that her XH didn't put up a fight 'out of guilt' but I wonder if it was really because Mommy was in prison and thus not able to tell him what to do except nod and say 'yes' to the strong woman barking orders at him. I have no doubt that he has long ago lost the ability to make decisions without writing them down for his mother's formal approval well in advance.

Yes she did the right thing in exposing her ex-mother-in-law in destroying her dil careers because her ex husband brother's partner knows that their soon to be mother-in-law will try and destroy their career as well. What your ex-mother-in-law did was a crime and its considers as false leading. Plus the house itself could have a mortgage on it and one partner cannot pay the monthy repayments for house but with two partners working the house can be paid off sooner.

Okay, I don't know about the law, but the fact they tried to enforce a forged resignation letter even when it's clear she knew nothing about it seemed completely bogus. If it was that easy to make somebody lose their job lots of people would be doing it to their enemies. Heck, I've /seen/ other stories where a MIL tried to get their DIL fired and it didn't work., so I'm not sure if this was just for this story to provide motivation for the MC to investigate the MIL's past or if the HR department was just stupid. Heck, the whole thing was stupid, they honestly thought they could destroy her livelihood and everything she's worked so hard for and she'd not only go along with it, but be /grateful/? This is either just a terrible plot for a story, or the MIL was just a complete narcissist who thought she could do whatever she felt best and everybody should be thankful for her consideration.

Fraud and harassment doesn't usually lead to hard time. I'm sure that 'Mark' ended up in the one place where he felt happy, safe and secure: With dear old Mommy, helping her recover from the trauma of her 'unjust punishment'. With luck, the fiancée realised how toxic that family was and ran for the horizon.
