Sunny's hat is downright good design that functions as a small umbrella to keep off rain, sun, wind and bugs! Press thumbs up to motivate Sunny to tell us where she bought her hat. I'm sorry you're not having fun, but I understand. On my first attempted thru-hike, I hated everything about hiking and camping, but I did manage to have a lot of fun. I took lots of zeroes and had some great parties. I only lasted as far as Damascus for Trail Days though because I just hated it. I came home thinking I was done with the dream I'd had for around 30 years. After coming home though, something about the trail kept calling me and three years later I was back. It was in 2020 which should have been the worst time ever to be on trail, but it was absolutely the best. That's the year I became a hiker. I'm trying to take care of some matters at home right now, but as soon as I get it all worked out, I'll be back there hitting what I missed in '20. I only had time to do a little over a thousand miles that year, but I knew I'd be back. I consider the trail my home now and intend to be on it every year for the rest of my life and hike the whole dang thing over and over, at least once with each of my nine grandkids. If you decide to quit, do yourself a favor and just take a week off in a trail town before going home. If you're still on trail when I get out there, I'll find you if you want and help you finish the trail. I'm gonna be out there for the rest of my life, so I don't care how much I do from year to year. Hope to see you out there.

Hang your food! As a woman that has been hiking/camping for over 60 years you DO NOT want to be caught in a tent when a bear comes in because he can’t smell your food. I have witnessed a bear tearing into a tent that had food in it, the owner of the tent was sitting by the fire so wasn’t hurt but everything in the tent and the tent was torn up. I have also seen a bear in Alaska take out the side of a camper trailer because they had food inside instead of hanging their food up. Be safe!

The bears probably smell polar bear and say "Nope." If you're not having fun on the AT exactly where your feet are, why is being at Katahdin so much better? (well, of course, you're done) "why am I doing this, again"? is a common conversation among through-hikers (and in the rest of life). I'm not a big fan of the "because it's there" mantra, some things you really don't have to do and conversely you'll go a lot further doing a project you love. Love a poem by Cavalfy called "Ithaka" One line is "They will not be able to pay you when you reach Ithaka." which roughly means enjoy the things along the way, don't expect the payoff at the end. Maybe that's the point of the AT, to know your mind, I sort of respect the people that quit at Neel's gap if it is an honest mistake: you gave it a try. *** A lot of that land was acquired by the US government during the depression, basically they just threw people off, not nice *** Eat hot dogs only very occasionally, but those looked really good.

From following you, my impression is that you don't enjoy spending so much time alone. I see other comments about you finding others to hike with, but you haven't found any, it's not as if you haven't tried, you're very outgoing. Unfortunately, you haven't found others that are hiking at your pace. Not to say there aren't others on the trail that are, there just not in your area. One of your expectations for the hike was meeting others, it wasn't 'gee, I just want to spend weeks and weeks by myself.' The saying is hike your own hike & maybe this hike isn't yours. Glad to see you taking care of your feet - you're going to need them for a long time yet😊. It used to be thought that hummingbirds didn't have a sense of smell, but studies have shown they can smell insects which may help them stay out of danger. Such a remarkable sighting! As for bears, we just don't want to see you eaten by one! They are active & have approached tents & shelters on the AT.

Have you noticed a correlation between your mood and your nutrition? The quality of your calories matter. You mentioned being concerned about weight gain earlier so it might be worth it to look at more intuitive eating (if you’re craving high calorie foods that tells you you need more calories; make them nutritional!) Hiking isn’t fun when the tanks are low! Also, it’s time to take a chance on meeting some trail friends. You need them. You will simply have to put yourself out there and ask if you can hike together with someone you meet and like. I know, it’s scary that there can be a million things to go badly but there’s also a million things that could be amazing! Think of it like the old cattle drives when cowboys would come together on the same trail for awhile until they have to part ways for whatever reasons; the company is good while it lasts and another friend may be in the next batch of cowboys. Except hikers don’t smell like cow. They smell like corn chips and morning breath. I’m rooting for you!
