Adjusting the RF pot in the box on the right fixed mine. No one else even mentioned it as a cause for hearing static. Everybody just wants to sell you their rebuild kit I guess. Anyway, thanks man. Can't get back the hours I spent trying to fix it thinking it was interference, but it works now lol.

Hey RetroDad. This is amazing thank you. I'm in UK. My PAL Atari 2600 appears to have an issue with it's colours but adjusting the tint dial doesn't seem to fix the issue. It's connected via the RF cable directly into the back of my Sony Trinitron's aerial port. Pitfall for instance, is a lot darker than it should be, even after tweaking brightness/contrast/fine tuning etc. Any suggestions?

YEs, those 70s vintage RF modulators were really bad/nisy. Other problem was the poor quality hardwired RF RCA cable. A real F connector and RG6 cable would have made things a lot better back in the day. Solution now is a 7800 with composite mod. DOn't know if its possible to add composite video out to a 2600 6/4 switch or 2600jr?

That's amazing! I've got to try this. I've been playing my Atari 2600 for years ever since they came out. I've noticed those little ports, but wasn't sure what they were for. I've noticed that mine is gradually getting worse in terms of picture and sound. I've tried cleaning it and have cleaned it every couple of years or so which helps a little, but it's still getting gradually worse. Will this help with how the picture gets those wavy lines and other weird artifacts after you've been playing for a little while too? Update: I tried working with the RF signal adjuster. I can't find a plastic Allen wrench, but I did get a plastic dental pick to fit in there and turn it. It's a little better. Given how touchy it is and how much I have to move the Atari around in order to use it (we sit it on the coffee table so that the controller cables reach the couch and then put it on a shelf in the entertainment center when we aren't using it), I guess that what I've achieved with the adjuster will have to do. While I was at it, I put electrical tape over the adjuster openings and on the connections of the RF cable to the TV/Cable switch etc. to try to shield the set up a bit better. I noticed while I had the console open and running that anything in the apartment that kicked on (refrigerator condenser, air conditioner, any fans that someone turned on, even their cell phone if they got too close to the console with it), caused interference. Hopefully, this will help at least a little bit. I didn't play with the sound and color settings because they actually sounded and looked very good as they were. It's good to know where they are though in case something gets messed up. I also very carefully wiped off the heat spreader that I learned about in another video while I was at it. I made sure that the system was turned off and unplugged and that I was wearing my anti-static strap first. I cleaned it with just a bit of alcohol on a swab. I know from working on computers that if a film of stuff or a layer of dust gets on any heat emitting parts, it can insulate them and keep them from losing their heat like they are supposed to.

👍 also....try taking a small wire brush and clean up the male ends of both sides of the RF cord (the one that connects to the board, and the other side that connects to the TV). Sometimes the tips of the RF chord just get tarnished and dirty. I have found that giving them a light scrubbing with a wire brush has really helped with the picture quality as well (when dealing with a picture with those squiggly RF lines across the screen).

The original Atari 2600 we owned developed an issue somewhere where the power adapter plugs into the back of the unit. For some reason, the unit would tend to output an extremely staticky image, but this could be temporarily resolved by tapping the power cable a few times where it meets the plugin port. Very annoying and eventually prompted me to seek out a used replacement. It looked rather like your video at about 3:50, but with little to no color resolution. I actually don't even know for sure whether I still possess the original console.
@arctic6405

know it sounds kinda weird but that could have been a weak powersupply because the color needs 7 volts to properly display but the console will work as low as 5 volts

With my VCS, the lighter colours aren't solid, there's movement and a sort of flicker. Would that be the RF adjustment, rather than tint, given some colours look absolutely fine?
@retrodad8817
2 жыл бұрын
Without seeing it, I would have to guess RF. The Tint adjustment only adjusts the color. If there is any sort of movement or flickering that can't be adjusted at the TV (example: Vertical Hold) then I would definitely try the RF. Also worth noting. The RF adjustment could be just fine if the actual RF cable is in bad shape. Sometimes the RF cable itself is just extremely dirty. I found on some occasions all I needed to do was a quick cleaning on the connectors of the RF cable to give myself a clearer picture with less static.

@@retrodad8817 Apologies, missed your reply! I tried a new RF cable and weirdly the whole picture was awful, not sure if cable is faulty (cheap one off Ebay but seems odd such a simple thing would be bad). I wondered about the cable as the issue changes very slightly when I wiggle the original cable around, but it doesn’t seem a connection issue. The affected colours, such as grey; it’s hard to explain, they’re present but it’s like they have their own little snowstorm going on, but it’s not like really bad, just not a solid colour, sort of different shades shimmering in little blocks within an area. It’s exactly the same on a 2010 digital TV and a ate 90s LCD TV, hence I assumed console, not TV. Had it been just one of the TVs I’d assume that, especially as neither is a CRT. I can't find a local CRT to test on here in London!

I’ve had some static issues on some of my units that are similar to those during your RF adjustment. I never knew about the adjustment in the RF itself. Thanks so much and I’ll try this to see if this helps. If not, not biggie, I’ll just composite mod them.
