DSK and USK -- think of the signal flow, imagine that you're standing on a bridge over a river. This bridge is your video switcher. The signal starts at the camera (a small creek), which is "upstream" from your position. If you do something upstream, it only affects one of your sources, and not necessarily the final result. That also means that the upstream key is specific to a signal source, and therefore it will (usually) change when you switch to another source. The downstream key, on the other hand, refers to what flows "out of the switcher". No matter what input you select, the "outgoing" transformation, such as your fancy logo, will always stick -- simply because it happens "after" where you're standing. It also affects all sources.

When thinking of the video streams, from the perspective of the switcher, Sources are "upstream", because the data flows into the device, while Sinks like HDMI out or recording are where the data flows to, aka downstream. So the naming comes from where in the pipeline the modification is applied, not from at which layer it's working at

Explanation for Upstream & Downstream: Think of it as a river. If you start rafting at upriver, you'll reach your destination on the downriver. Along the ways you can catch all the fish you want, and they end up on the downriver. Your boathouse is on the downriver with fixed structures, and that's where you'll end up eventually. Or think of anything to do with verticality such as a hill or a skiing slope. You start at the top (up) and reach the bottom (down).

I assume the use of DSK (Down Stream Key) and USK (Up Stream Key) comes from the world of theatre and how the stage orientation is referred to. Downstage is the front of the stage closest to the audience and Upstage is the backwall of the stage. This comes from the beginning of theatre when stages were on an slope so the back (or the Upstage) of the stage was elevated, this gave actors that were standing Upstage better visibility to the audience. That could be the reason why they would use DSK to be in front of the presenter and the USK to be the behind the presenter.

@@zebrazone Your content is great - thank you very much for this! In regards to 'upstream' and 'downstream', these are terms picked up from the reference point of a literal 'stream' (a small, narrow river). Streams normally run from a higher level to a lower level - so 'up stream' is closer to the 'source' and 'down stream' is closer to the 'destination'. Applying this to the broadcasting world, upstream keys are closer to the input (source) and downstream keys are closer to the output (destination). I trust this helps.

The keying thing is easy if you think of it like a stream, downstream is the program output or final destination. Upstream is the camera or start of the signal. Now anything you do at the upstream end will travel to the end unless you remove it (keying out for eg). So if I have a logo I want it downstream because I want it “down” from all the other switching and keying activities this way it is always on my final output. On the other hand a graphic or headline will want to be upstream of the camera or computer so when I switch to that camera it goes through to the end but if I switch to another camera it goes away

Water in rivers and streams streams from up to down, this is an allegory for the order in which data is processed. The upstream is processed first, the downstream is what is processed last before it streams out into the internet.

Upstream and downstream make sense if you think of it, hehe, in terms of the oil industry (or a river). "Downstream" means "towards the end of the production line", so refineries, whereas "upstream" means at the beginning, so oil extraction.

To understand the naming of upstream/downstream keys, think of your video flow like a river or assembly line. First you add the source, then manipulate them, and later on you add first your upstream key and then finally your downstream key. So because the downstream key comes "later down the line", it is called downstream. Hope that makes sense.

USK vs DSK... Like a Photoshop file or like going down a river, Upstream Keys (USK) are "upstream" or closest to the background/starting point of the river. Downstream Keys (DSK) are at the end of the river / the last thing to be added or layered. Thus, DSK's are on top of everything. Also, it important to know with multiple USK's (upstream keys), lower USK's are behind the others.... 1 is behind USK 2 which is behind USK 3 and USK 4 is above them all. Your Downstream key (DSK) is over EVERYTHING, including transitions. So, if you have a bug/logo loaded as a DSK and you press "auto" transition from camera 1 to camera 2 or another source, the logo will remain visible.

I tested my extreme ISO the other day and one downside of the it is that once you are done with your recording or streaming and you bring the project into Davinci Resolve, whenever you did cut to a Super Source (during your show) in the timeline will appear as a clip of a black generator, so in order to actually see what you did you will have to take the program output file and stack it on top of your SS (luckily it's already synced up). That means if u did plan to use the braw recordings you also have to animate or recreate your SS layouts manually in the edit page cause otherwise you'll have just the 1080 program you outputted. So maybe if u plan to work a lot in 1080 using just the SS with those cool transitions you do not need the ISO version at all.
@zebrazone
3 жыл бұрын
Interesting ! And I guess animated macros make things even worse because making these animations in Resolve isn’t easy.... guess the best thing is to take the program each time you have the super source black generator ..
@13TeK11
3 жыл бұрын
@@zebrazone Correct! Since I only ever used Davinci I don't know about other programs but you don't have to use Fusion to make those transitions, you can very easily just use keyframes in the edit page to move, crop and animate stuff around. And let's be fair here, the case is a very specific one, to encounter this "problem" you would need to be someone who has all blackmagic cameras and wants to output a 4k video after a live event where you used SS, and it's not that it's hard to do but it's just inconvenient that you have to tweak stuff in post if you did use SS.

In explaining why "Upstream" is in front and "Downstream" is behind, (which seems counter intuitive) I'm reminded of the theatrical stage directions. "Up Stage" means away to the audience (towards the back of the stage) and "Down Stage" means closer to the audience and footlights. Early theatrical stages were slightly slanted up to allow the audience a better view of the entire stage. Perhaps this is one explanation for the adaption of these video terms.

Upstream and downstream is relative to transitions, from my understanding. Upstream compositions are used for shots/scenes, while downstream compositions are generally kept even when making a transition to another shot, for example with a logo or « bug ». You tie USK more often than DSK to transitions.
