When I was younger, I went outside during a thunderstorm. I got down on my knees and shouted up to the heaves, "God! If you really DO exist, strike me with lightning right now- COME ON!" A fraction of a second later, I actually was struck by lightning. Probably thanks to the thick rubber soles of my trainers, I was lucky to escape serious injury and, mindful of what I'd just shouted, I remember thinking to myself: "F*%* me - what a coincidence!"

When I was a little kid I remember going to a Catholic Church. I had no idea what the priest said. It was all in Latin. But he stood there pouring a liquid from one container and then back again. I had no clue what he was doing. But the worst part is I noticed a frail, old woman standing, then sitting, then kneeling, standing etc over and over again. She had to use all the force she could to get off her knees. And when she was on her knees they were on a wood plank that came out from the back of the pew in front of her. It was hard wood. I felt so bad because she was obviously in a lot of pain. Hard wood against knees where bone was exposed must’ve been excruciating. I wanted to go help but I was only 5. But ever since then I thought how cruel it was to force that poor woman to believe she had to do that. I also realized at 5 that religious rituals were ridiculous and that all of them were created my men. But every church has different rituals. All of them were thought up by men. Anyway, when you mentioned getting on your knees memories of that moment I saw that woman being cruelly harmed by religion cane back and I thought how cruel it was.

Now, I agree Joel was talking in circles and doing mental gymnastics to justify his book, but you don't scream "Shut Up!" to someone you're conversing with. A man had a friend that he knew all his life and one day he saw that his friend was feeling very downtrodden, so he asked his friend what was wrong. He said his business was failing, he lost his house, his wife, his car, everything. The man told his friend to get a Bible, turn to any page, and he will find the answer. So, the friend got a Bible, closed his eyes and put his finger on a page. The man saw his friend a year later, his business was thriving, he wore a $1,000 suit, drove a new Cadillac, lived in a very nice house, etc. The friend told him what he had done with the bible. The man asked, what was on that page of the Bible that so drastically changed your life, and the friend said, Chapter 11.

Some people “cherry-pick” the bible, go along with the “good” parts, ignore the “bad” parts. If you are capable of recognizing something as good or bad, right or wrong, then what do you need the book for? Again, their sense of good and bad, or right and wrong, preceded and existed outside of their reading of the Bible.

Poor Terence doesn't realize that a large number of atheists are former Christians. I never was, but I've gone out on a couple of occasions during thunderstorms and asked if god was real then prove himself by striking me down with lightning. Obviously that never happened or I wouldn't be typing this. Also, why hasn't he gone through other rituals asking other gods to reveal themselves to him in case they're real? The narrow-minded egoism of Christians never ceases to amuse me.

I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan, but Matt needs to drop this silly "animals die in the fields too" argument, as it's bad for a whole load of reasons. Here are just three, though: Firstly, this isn't a choice between slaughtering animals on an industrial scale in factories or mowing them down in fields: the latter is going to happen anyway because vegetables and grains and so on are a key component of our diets. There aren't many people who only eat meat and nothing else, and it's not as if people like Matt and myself are sparing field mice by eating cows. Secondly, the claims of 'rodent genocide' or whatever tend to be massively overblown anyway: most substantiated research shows that relatively few animals are killed by harvesting machines, as the majority of them basically do a Secret of NIMH and try to get out of the fields when the big clunking machinery comes. Lastly, even if it were true that large amounts of animals were dying in fields, much of the crops that are grown in the first place are not even for human consumption - they're for livestock. If the number of livestock went down because of lower meat consumption, then the amount of fields needed for them would go down, and thus the total amount of animals killed (in the fields + slaughterhouses) would go down. So logically, if you're going to talk about the problem of animals dying in fields, *you should be on the vegans' side here.*
