One reason I really enjoyed parts of "Sleepy Hollow" was they had the man-out-of-time quickly adopting to parts of modern culture. My favorite scene was when he seemed confused over two men holding hands in a restaurant, and then explained "yes yes, we had homosexuals in my time too, I'm talking about wearing hats indoors."

I checked out the TV tropes page on this, found a couple examples I loved: Anachronism Stew: Unless the main character was so cloistered that he didn't know anything about his own society, (which is implied to be the case), his comments about the ubiquitousness of prostitution or the starving children on every street corner in the future ring false, since in his time they were worse. Culture Blind: The protagonist appears to be blissfully unaware of how society really works in both in the past and the future.

By basically every metric (aside from international environmental quality, and even then the level of overt pollution is much better now) the world is spectacularly better than it has ever been in the past. 22:10 What makes that scene even worse is that in the 19th century, women, especially of higher classes, were expected to drink and party. They went to balls at all hours of the night, drank wine, danced to the popular music of the day, hung out with men (supervised, though), and, depending on the decade, it was sometimes fashionable to show off very low necklines. They had to do this to make proper social connections and find husbands.

So this movie is set in the year 1890 and tries to run on "good old times" nostalgia. You know what happened in 1890? Massacre of Wounded Knee and Eritrea being officially declared a colony of Italy. And Mahdists were rampaging in East-Africa. So racist mass murders, imperialism and religious fanaticism (mind you Italians weren't anywhere near as cruel colonial rulers as British, French, Belgians or Germans). Oh yeah a nice time to be alive. And lets not forget that just a few years later British used concentration camps to subdue the Boers. And the stage for the Great War was already been set.

I wouldn't say that. I mean granted the movies made by Evangelicals like The Kendrick Brothers and Pure Flix absolutely suck, but that doesn't mean that all "Christian" themed movies are bad. @StargazerSkyscraper

JukeDenton As go the movie Tron and LOTR, but you don't see them listed in the Christian section of any movie or bookstore. Just because something is inspired by Christian mythology doesn't mean it's a "Christian" product, any more than the religious population of the United States makes the country a "Christian nation". I never said anything about "Christian themes", so I'm not sure where you pulled that notion from. You know what I meant, and it obviously had nothing to do with theme. My comment was also clearly a joke, so, yeah... Congratulations, I guess? I'm not sure what you expected to gain or prove...
@StargazerSkyscraper

***** Need I copy and paste the response I already gave to the other guy? It goes for you as well. I don't know where you're getting this idea that I somehow dissed films with biblical themes. Ben Hur was not a Bible story any more than Tron or The Chronicles of Narnia films. Ben Hur was based off a historical fiction book written in *1880, and the movie took many liberties which, in my opinion, made the movie more relevant and accessible than the very limited audience of the book. Tron and Narnia also had heavy religious themes, but those movies weren't made for or by Christians exclusively either. Again -- Just because a product takes inspiration from Christianity doesn't make it a Christian product. My original comment was also a joke, which clearly flew over your head. I will not repeat myself.

Somehow this one played while I was sleeping and I dreamt of Hugo and Jake. I cuddled them. When I woke up I replayed it, and took a one minute shit. Best start to my day ever.

Does anyone else think "The Christiano Brothers" sounds like the name of circus performers? "Come one, come all! Witness the miraculous, amazing, Flying Christiano Brothers!" Also, this guy doesn't know what a hot dog is? As you said, sausages aren't new. But this guy's from the 1890s? In 1890, sausages in bread have been a thing in the US for 30 years. No way he doesn't know what a hot dog is.

He also doesn't know what baseball is, apparently, despite the National League being established 15 years before he went time traveling. Dude must've been living under a rock or something.

When I was religious I actually honestly loved this movie - rewatching it now with your commentary just makes me so happy that I have left the Christian cult!

You shouldn't of left Christianity. 1 Timothy 4:1 "Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons," Hebrews 3:12-19"Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? ..."

Robert Ingersoll died in 1899. Dubbed the Great Agnostic, he was the highest-paid and most popular public speakers. This was known as the Golden Age of Free Thought. And yet, the Christiano Brothers seem to live in an entirely different universe.

People should just start downloading videos as soon as they go up and mirror them so KZitem content never disappears again. I'm tired of shit being taken down unfairly, if they really want to stop bad publicity they should try harder and make decent content in the first place. Now I'm just gonna archive stuff that's just even the slightest bit interesting to me so it doesn't vanish.
