Old chain onto a second anchor? Great low cost insurance for when you need two. Or when you lose the primary. Clean it, paint it, bag it, with shackles.

Hi love watching you guys.... always entertaining and often instructive. I would suggest that you apply seizing wire to both shackles at the anchor to stop pins coming undone on shackles. Also for the last length of chain at the "bitter end" paint a longer section of chain or some yellow paint every 6 inches so you know you have reached the end when paying out. If you are paying out maximum scope under winch power you don't want to rip the end out of the boat and lose the lot overboard. (assuming you have secured the bitter end).
@1962gms
2 жыл бұрын
Good point, but also use a spare line to secure the bitter end to Atlas. You may want to release the chain quickly & cutting a chain is way easier than a siezed shackle. ⛵️

Hi guys. The contraption you had the tender on is called “a launching trolly or trailer. 2. The seizing wire is to go through the shackle pin eye and twisted round the shackle itself to ensure it doesn’t come undone!!!! This to be done on ALL shackles which do not need to be undone regularly. Capt JB

I''m sure it has been suggested: tie the last bit of chain to the boat with rope that reaches the bowsprit; in case you ever need to ditch your anchorage and can't get the anchor up , you tie on a float and cut the rope and off you go and return later to retrieve the anchor.....

Watching the dingy being inflated made me laugh so much I fell off the cockpit seat. It really was a spectacular bit of cinema. But you have reminded me I must get an anchor swivel, what a good idea. Really enjoy your prep for the ocean blue. Best, David

Not keen on slatted floor tender , not easy to put away , air floor is better. The paint won’t stay on ,it wears off quickly depending on how frequent you use it , but anyway,you won’t be using it crossing the Atlantic lol . Many sailors don’t like swivels because they can become a weak point in the system and some also say they are not needed, I don’t have one myself. Not criticism just comments
@TheSailingBrothers
2 жыл бұрын
We would have preferred an air floor but we couldn't really afford it David. Once the paint wears off the chain we are going to fit little bit of line or fabric to Mark every 10 m. Let's hope the swivel does it's job thanks for your comments David 👍

We run a fleet of charter boats and find that paint does not last very long on anchor chain. We therefore use strips of spinnaker fabric tied through the chain - it goes through the windlass OK, and can usually be seen well below the water level if the sea is clear enough. FWIW we mark using traffic light colours - green at 10 (getting ready to go), yellow at 20 then red at thirty (definitely stopped) then go around again. They generally work the same whatever country you come from!

Can I suggest a way for marking the anchor chain. Think of the flags of the UK, France, USA, Netherlands. What are the colours? Red, white and blue. Everyone would give that answer with the colours always in that order; red, white, blue. Use cable ties - 1 red, ten metres, two reds, 20 metres, 3 reds, 30 metres, 1 white 40 metres etc, . You know red starts at 10 metres, white starts at 40, blue at 70 if you needed that much. Or you could reduce the progressions to 5 metres.

The end of the the anchor chain is called the bitter end, as in the expression. If you are ever anchored on a lee shore and the weather picks up, Murphys law dictates that your anchor may become jammed on a rock or your windlass won’t work. Either situation could result in disaster, hence you should be able to cut the bitter end in a hurry and ditch your anchor, hence the expression, at the bitter end. Stay safe, use some rope to tie it in, else Murphy may show himself! It’s just not worth the risk. Good sailing guys and fair weather.

Hi Adam, hi Luke, I love it to watch your great Videos, my dream is a sailing trip around Britain in the future also. I am looking forward to follow you on the Atlantic trip! Be careful with the Orcas in Spain and the weather on the way back to England. One question from my side, I remember the room tour through your boat and you mentioned that you do not have a fridge, only the insulated box. I assume for warmer regions you should have the possibility to cool down the cheese, what do you think about it? If the seawater is fare above 20°C there is no option to cool down anything without a fridge. Are you planning to upgrade your box with a cooling unit? Have a safe journey and fair winds! Cheers and greetings from Europe (Germany) to UK (former Europe;-) Achim

I’m not wishing to be a moaner here but a word to the wise. The e scooters are classed as motorbikes here in the UK and as such you need a licence, insurance, helmets etc. If you are caught by the ‘Old Bill’ you may face fines and seizure of the scooters. This may or may not apply in other countries.
