Update Feb 2020: The new launchpads have this feature and The Machine mikro mk3 got it a few months ago through a firmware update, so it's basically only the Atom that doesnt have this feature at this point.

The ATOM seems to be abandoned by PreSonus. No note mapping, or feature configuration. It was their way to hook more people onto their "Studio One". They falsely advertised ATOM as a universal midi pad controller. It will largely be incompatible with 3rd party software, unless you're willing to waste time and effort on midi translators, like NoteMapper, or the vst that you're using lets you change the trigger notes. Don't buy!

As Software Developer myself, and having even worked with DIY MIDI projects based on Arduino and RaspberryPi, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been so difficult to add the functionality to remap the notes to the pads, unless they are using some integrated chip that has the notes hardcoded in its fabric, which I doubt. MIDI is generally handled entirely in software. At the same time, for a HW manufacturer to plan the development of their product accordingly to cost and time constraint, sometimes it's easier to just cut corners. I also expect some of them don't develop the SW in house, but rather pay a SW specialized company, who might just charge you unreasonably for adding even simple features. These things usually boil down to how they do their business, and it's also a marketing hook, where for a simple feature missing on a budget product you might be tempted to pay the extra money for the bigger brother, like in the case of NI Maschine. My 2 cents.

GM midi does not work with 16x pads because most GM are chromatic and if you play b and c for kick then snare will be d and e so the atom starts at c and you loose your low b kick and your kits are broken up in unfriendly spots (hunt and peck) the work around is to use the atom as the main controller and program you mpd218 to match so when you switch controllers or double up they are all the same for example. C kick c sharp kick 2. And then d and d# snares.

Good to know about Mikro Mk3 and Launchpad Pro, I only knew about the Atom, thanks! I think finger drumming is a very small niche at the moment and most pad controller users don't need the note change feature, but when the community grows big enough, they'll probably have to implement it. I think Andreas from xpresspads said that the Atom can be configured, just that only within the Presonus DAW, so they might also be trying to force people to use certain softwares by limiting this feature. Do you know whether Mikro MK3 can be configured within the Maschine software? How about the Launchpad Pro, do they also have a proprietary software that comes with it (that could be configured)? Come to think of it, I'm not sure if you are aware, regarding the Launchpad Pro, I think there is a way to do it, if you want you can search the xpresspads youtube channel or website, Andreas has remapped it somehow (he has demo videos with it), I just don't remember how he did it. Cheers! Looking forward to see the new studio and new videos!

It is still a big deal for Addictive Drums users to use MIDI learn, because then you are changing your drum mapping instead of the controller's, which means if it won't play recorded parts right unless you have the same plugin setup saved for the MIDI data. You'd need to have a copy for each part if you wanted to change things in your kit in the future. The missing feature would let you play recorded MIDI the same, no matter how you set the pads. I wrote an email but realize you're no doubt very busy. I had bought an Presonus Atom on the premise that it had much better sensitivity and quality control (I gathered that from other videos including your own). Suffice to say the first one intermittently had PAD 12 sticking (causing issues with bringing up the Browse menu in Song Setup mode) then suddenly PAD5 would get stuck every few triggers in Studio One. I was luckily able to bring it back and get another ATOM at the local music store. I just had a chance to sit down and start to use it this morning and noticed PAD7 would occasionally misfire and low and behold it too would get stuck occasionally. Is this par for the course for a sub $800 controller? If this continues I'll have to take this back and argue that for my money back. I would order a Maschine Mikro MK3 but no local stores within 500km have one which would mean ordering one on Amazon.ca which I'd rather get local just on the odd chance there was something wrong with it. I'm just wondering if anyone else might have/had issues like this with the ATOM.

Hey! Well, its never completely clear how many subpar devices are out there at any given time. I try to keep an eye on how many people tell me on this channel and also on the message boards ( questforgroove.discourse.group ). I've played 2 presonus atoms, one of which I bought 3 months ago and they were both exactly the same all pads functioning properly. However, I also have 3 maschine mikro mk3 units, one being a couple months old, all of which are great and right now, I actually have this thread on the forums from a few people who bought a mikro mk3 that wasn't functioning well. All of them got their device exchanged, 1 had to exchange twice and in the end they ended up with a mikro mk3 they were happy with. So yeah... while i dont hear a lot of stories of bad atoms and i myself have never played a bad one, you might have bad luck and need to exchange the controller again. The stupid thing is that this could also ne the beginnig of the decline of the atom controller just like the mpd218, but its hard to be sure unless you can test all units that are produced this month or something which is impossible. All i can say is that there are not a lot of complaints coming my way about the atom or the mikro mk3, but there are other people out there who also got a crappy one for sure!

If there's inconsistency between the pads in a noticeable way, I think returning is a good choice. That's impossible to fix. It is normal that pads respond a little differently when hitting them in different spots. So the side vs the center. But overall the pads should be more or less consistent.

Agreed!! I use the maschine midi software ALL THE TIME. Its actually part of my routine to save individual maschine midi files for each project. Glad i took your advice on the Maschine MK3. My launchpad mk2 doesnt have it and im pretty lost without it... it doesnt get used (among other obvious reasons). I was actually told the launchpad pro comes with this desired software via reddit so im glad i found out that it actually doesn't..... which brings me to my next point: the 64 pad units like the ableton push and the akai force.... are the pads on those customizable? are they even midi capable or only standalones? these are the things i think about... which is why i was close to buying a launchpad pro because all i want is a good 64 pad controller that works via midi. But screw the launchpad pro if you can't customize the pads. this functionality should be a no-brainer for included features. Even my alesis vi25 has its own software to customize everything. which brings me to my LAST point (lol).... check out bomes midi translator pro. pretty sure you could use that to customize pad controllers. Would love to see a video abouot the 64 pad units though... especially since they are growing in popularity among finger drummers.

Back when midi controllers were used with hardware synths, the manufacturers sort of agreed that the controllers should be configurable. When midi learn became an easy thing to configure in software, all of these usb-only devices started to drop the note and cc value configuration on the controller firmware. It's mostly cost-cutting, as a configurable stand-alone controller requires a simple display and menu buttons, maybe an encoder. Some just let you configure it with computer software, though - so additional hardware isn't required. But you do have to develop the configuration software and support it for years(programmers are expensive) and deal with sending firmware to and from without bricking devices(good programmers are more expensive). Which is why I recommend buying new hardware from manufacturers that can also write good software. Like NI, Arturia and Novation lately. I don't trust Akai to do anything right, for example - everything software wise is buggy and badly thought out. I still keep older ESI, Korg and MAudio controllers that are stand-alone configurable, they're good because you can't screw them up with a firmware update.

Well, from my perspective as a teacher you have to imagine that I have to figure something out that works fast and easy for most people and without too many complications. Otherwise I turn into some sort of tech-helpdesk. Midi note remapping in cubase, ableton, maschine, logic. That's complicated and annoying. Also "transpose" is not the right thing to do. If you transpose a software drum instrument all the sounds transpose at the same time. That's why you need a midi drum map. Im reading all this stuff about using "chorder" or writing your own remapping in XML (haha). Sounds like a pain, but maybe I am actually missing something simple here. Would honestly love to know! At the time this video was posted the Launchpad pro mk3 and Launchpad X did not yet exist. This is about the Launchpad pro mk2 (the older one). The Launchpad mini is unfortunately not good. hi , great channel i discovered soe weeks ago . a word concerning the launchpad pro , NATIVE KONTROL who made "ARSENAL" script for ABLETON midi controller (very stable) , this upgrade radically the use of the controller , and they added a "USER_NOTE" mode in wich we can choose for each pad color, midi ch & note number ( there's several other great features that gives in depth controls of ableton sampler & drumracks)... it's a bit out of the topic of "standalone" use , but if some people look for more in depth use of this controller , it's good to check it out. just sharing the info because i found it a game changer for the work of finger drumming in ableton , and for other tasks too. thx

I heard someone in a comment say recently that NI is working on an update for the mikro mk3 to give it a 100% functional midi standalone mode where you can change the notes of the pads just like with the big mk3. You already have midi mode with the small mk3 but you'd have to use midi learn to assign pads and knobs to sounds and functions. You cannot change the note value the pads send out right now. Other than that the midi standalone function just works.

You have to make a mapping with your DAW or an external plugin like Note Mapper. By the way, after this video was released the Masxhine mikro and New Launchpads got a note mapper feature to actually change the notes of the pads so right now its only the atom that has this problem. It doesn't really matter that its not hard to use a workaround, it's just a little silly that manufacturers don't implement this feature in their controllers. Hi!!! Nice video!!! I was wondering if you can use the Mikro MK3 for controlling and sequencing external gear via midi in an easy way. In the frequent asked questions they say you can do it with an additional midi interface, but they give the komplete audio six as an example, which costs almost as much as the mikro mk3 itself. Is there something cheaper that can do the same thing? If not it might be better to get the new nektar aura, which does have midi outputs and is able to control and sequence gear out of the box. What do you think? The Aura is tempting, but if the mk3 could be used for midi controlling without spending a lot more, it could be more than enough for fingerdrumming?
@TheQuestforGroove
4 жыл бұрын
It should be possible with a usb to midi converter plug or if the external gear actually has a USB input for midi ovrer usb. That shouldn't be more expensive than $50 if you keep it basic! BUT its always a bit of a guess how the device responds. In my experience just plugging the mikro into a usb hub doesn't make it boot up. It needs a computer to start working...

Thanks, that’s quite reassuring though not entirely :) That Akai issue really sucks. I have indeed bought the Mikro and it’s here since a few days. Having lots of fun! In fact MIDI mode has the pads being less sensitive and they behave a bit different than in Maschine mode, but it’s by far not as bad as some comments in the forum made it. They are still much easier to play than ROLI Lightpad, which is all I have for comparison. I noticed that in MIDI mode the pads send poly aftertouch data, which they don’t in Maschine mode (only used for note repeat), which makes me assume that they use the pressure data to enhance sensitivity. Still there is hope that with controller editor support comes some tweak ability on that front as well. As they are now I find them very playable for drums in MIDI mode, albeit they need a tad more of a minimum hit strength to trigger. I don’t regret the purchase at all. I am not so fond of the velocity curve for melodic playing in MIDI mode, though. It’s just not possible to get velocities below a certain value. Maschine mode comes to the rescue, there the lowest achievable velocity depends on the curve you choose. In “Hard 3” it goes down to a minimum value of 5 with the slightest touch while 127 takes a pretty hard bang. I think the range of “hit hardness” it distinguishes in Maschine mode is very impressive! Thanks for your encouragement to try this device!

I only recently started looking into iOS music production and I'm not an expert on it yet. And that's an understatement. What I can say is that all my controllers where said to use too much power when plugging them in my iPad mini 2. I used a powered USB hub or my novation launchpad pro which had an external power supply. That seems to be the most important problem to overcome. Just being able to power the device. I think a presonus atom with a powered USB hub is a great starter kit for iOS. However because all iPads are a bit different I cannot guarantee it will work with everything.

My guess is that you can do the jazz stuff that I do on your iPad pro, but it might not be one on one the same. So you will need a drumkit with brushes that also has some if these tricks but then for iOS. Maybe drumperfect or sampletank also has some great sounding drums with brushes in which case setting up the pad controller and jamming away should be all you need to do! :-) Theres a free beginner course on questforgroove.com No jazz tutorials in there though, but the basics are all there!

@@matteobirsa I think the pads of the mikro mk3 are a little better than launchpad pro mk2. So if you have a cheap mikro mk3 you can get and you don't need 64 pads, get the maschine mikro mk3. They also have to give you the software license with it!! Thats important!

What about irig pads?

I cant remember, but I think irig pads just aren't that good over all. And by now you have the new launchpad x that doesnt have this problem and the maschine mikro got a firmware upgrade and also got rid of the problem!

@@TheQuestforGroove Thanks. should i buy irig pads or mpd218, cant afford the high priced ones. There's sensitivity issue with mpd218 (recent ones). Irig pads has no problems i guess. Whats your view on these two.

I think you should buy Presonus Atom insead of those two. $150 and very decent pads. Better than irig or a bad mpd218.

@@TheQuestforGroove Presonus Atom is best sensitive padfor that price range but i cant configure or change midi note set for each pad. They are fixed and dont change, this is what i heard from other videos.

@@samueljoseph1867 Thats correct. You can only change notes by making a custom drum map in your DAW. There's a free plugin over here >> www.codefn42.com/notemapper/ You might want to check that out and see if you can make that work for your needs. If so, you can actually still get the atom and get the best value for money! I honestly felt like the irig pads were a disappointment so I cannot recommend them :-(

You can do this with any of them, you just need DAW software that doesn't suck.

That make no sense. That's like saying "You can use your car to fly as long as you put it on board of an airplane". That does not give the car the ability to fly. That said, most of these controllers got upgrades and it's no longer an issue with newer models or updated firmware (except the Atom I think).

@@TheQuestforGroove You don't even need a better DAW, it's just one less step than using a plugin. Do you really think no musician/engineer has ever did anything like this in the history of digital recording?

@@bm3410 haha you're right 🙂 Some people do need to change the notes of the pads though. I think some of them might have commented here as well in the past.
