David you are 100% correct about that Havahart. The model number is the # 1083. It cost me about $35 last year online but I noticed Lowes is stocking them now. The problem with a "hair trigger" on the atomic barbie is that when you use peanut butter for bait, you will attract small birds to the trap and you will end up wasting a lot of time catching and then releasing small birds. I do not recommend putting tape on top to adjust the trigger mechanism of the 1030. One of the things I love about this trap, is that every time it closes there is a squirrel inside. What you are doing would undermine that. You must be leaving your trap out at night to be catching mice in it. Mice are not usually active during the day. I close the 1030 at night and put mouse traps inside when I want to catch mice. The mice can get through the trap and enter but birds are too big to do that, so they wont be killed by the mouse trap.

The correct model number is 1083. When I typed 1030 that was a mistake.

You did a nice job with the volume and clarity of this video. Very easy to hear and understand even on my old laptop. But next time turn the camera sideways ie landscape mode for youtube videos I'm pretty sure a significant percentage of squirrel traps are being used to protect bird feeders from squirrels. I use my traps at the base of my bird feeders, so while you may think being "extremely sensitive" is a plus, I don't want to have to keep checking a trap to see if there is a small bird inside. I stopped using my Havahart 1030's for exactly that reason. I also don't like the Squirrelinator trip plate being so close to the back of the trap for a similar reason. I need space to put a device I created that prevents birds from stealing the peanut butter and leaving the trap empty. I don't think I could do that with the Squirrelinator. Squirrels wont enter an empty trap and my eyes are not good enough to check the bait without walking out to it. I'm not sure you were aware of some of this stuff when you were trying to evaluate these traps. The Havahart 1083 is the best squirrel trap out there by a very wide margin in my opinion The Havahart trap you used is not an EZ-set trap and I am not sure what the EZ-set model number would be for this same size trap I have used the Havahart EZ-set # 1083 to dispose of 300 grey squirrels since June 2014. The *** 1-door *** EZ-Set traps save me time in 3 different ways: 1) They are much easier and faster to set. 2) they are also much easier to bait because you just put the bait behind the trigger plate, instead of trying to balance the bait on top of the trigger plate. 3) I don't have any false alarms any more because the 1083 is NEVER set off by small birds. It takes a 1 pound animal to set off the 1083 and almost all grey squirrels weigh at least 1 pound. That is important if you are not home to keep checking your traps. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed for hours with a small bird inside. I used to use a 1030 for squirrels but since I bought 2 of the EZ set 1083 traps, I stopped using the older model trap. Plus the 1030 is a longer trap, so I would need to use a larger size tropical fish tank to drop the 1030 into. Home Depot and Lowes do not stock the 1083 but I was able to get them online for about $35 via Amazon WRZ Delaware County, PA

I use a large magnet on my trigger pan that I slide up or down to make it trip more sensitive since it provides weight on the trigger pan. Since it is a magnet, it stays in place. I use a large, round flat magnet that was originally screwed onto a short metal pole and used for picking up nails and such. I bought if for cheap at Harbour Freight.

Why do you want the trap to be more sensitive ? What are you trapping in it ? The Havahart # 1083 is already set perfectly to catch squirrels.

I've caught twenty so far with the Squirrelinator. When I release them in the park I simply open the top and they run out, usually within the first ten seconds.

So far I have caught 160+ using the Squirrelinator with the right bait in ~14 months. The best trap ever.

Hello. I personally have not trapped flying squirrels. Perhaps others on this post may be able to provide insight.

The Atomic Barbie traps don’t last. After multiple traps a squirrel or possum will tear the trigger apart. It’s quite effective for a while.

In my opinion, it depends upon the time of the year. In the spring the squirrels love peanut butter. In addition, I also went to a local Farms store and picked up squirrel food that they sell in bags. It includes corn and sesame seeds and peanuts and things like that. In the fall time and winter time, the squirrels go crazy for black walnuts. For those, I go to a local Park where they have walnut trees and you will find them all over the ground. Squirrels go nuts for them, no pun intended, but only when it's cold out.

I watched a chipmunk push the door open on the atomic barbie.. They must be stronger than I imagined. I had a surveillance camera on the trap.

Ha! They are crafty little buggers. I have noticed that occasionally, the metal bar does not slide all the way down to secure them in. Especially should the cage be slightly bent.

Please don't transport live wild animals and release them somewhere. Not only is it illegal it is unnecessarily cruel. Squirrels for example are family animals and another family will not let them join and may attack them. They may slowly starve to death. Just kill them and get it over with. You are not doing them any favors by moving them. I have the squirrelinator trap also. I had one or two escape over the years. I think it happens when another one starts to come in but hesitates long enough when they open the door. It is a decent trap but my squirrels tend to remember it and stay away. I can only use it for a few weeks each spring. I wouldn't consider needed to close or open the door a negative.
