The interface looks very friendly and well designed. I can see myself buying this one! It was clever of you to put so much effort into the randomisation functions. With such an unintuitive sound generation paradigm, I'm sure every bit of help in exploring sounds by listening to them will bring you more happy customers.

What an unusual synth, a conscious attempt to create a cult classic? It has a 60s kind of European vibe about it which I love. I was commenting the other day on a UAD thread, wishing we could put Baby Audio skins on their plugins instead of those tiring vintage panels. However this one doesn't seem to have the same tight simplicity of previous releases. I'm a bit confused by this release and that's kind of a good thing :)

i tried the trial and thats a fun synth for sure, i dig the sounds it offered alot, but it actually misses an important feature for me (the option to adjust the pitchbend range. i use an mpe controller (Erea Touch) and like to slide between different notes, and with the efault pitch value of 2 thats not going to work well, so i prefer pitch range 48 (Roli default value) would it be hard for you to implement such feature?

Hey there, we appreciate your feedback! If you lower the values on the Chaos, Force, Modulation and Vibrato parameters, that shuold do a lot to stabilize and streamline the pitch. Given the nature of the instrument, there will always be a tiny bit of organic movement but having more Order than Chaos and lower Force, Modulation and Vibrato will give a sense of stability.

I wish i could hear it without so much distortion and reverb. Every patch seems swimming in both, and that isn’t a good sign, as it seems like trying to cover up some basic blandness in the core sound. If that’s not the case, why are there no patches in any demo video showing proudly that the engine just sounds great, without effects? Even Nick Batt only takes off the reverb and distortion for a moment, not allowing me to hear what the ‘oscillator’ actually sounds like. I like physical modeling for harmonics, and while there are definitely harmonics showing up, they don’t ever seem to come that far forward. So i may have to take a pass on this one or wait for further development.

So I will dive right in and say I only create on iPadOS on an M1 device, with GarageBand…This looks really interesting, but what I lack in GB iOS (yes shouts of ‘everything!’ from the back), is automation mainly. Is it possible, to enable the only two automation controls in GB iOS, the mod wheel and the pitch wheel, to be user-mappable to any chosen two out of the 6 control dials shown? That, would be pretty good. ‘Transit’ I’d love to have this, but it may be harder or impossible in GB iOS, as it is an effect not an instrument. But, theoretically, ‘Atoms’ should be able to be programmed to enable this? Not being too demanding I don’t think…demanding would be to ask that each of the mod/pitch wheel could be mapped to MULTIPLE of the control dials haha! But, my points are just positive feedback, and I hope possible. I think this is a great example of this type of instrument, there have been stabs at physical modelling in the past, with a couple of notables, this is a premier implementation. Lastly, great explanation/tutorial here, thanks for that. This is nearly mid-Feb 2024, so I am keenly awaiting the iOS/iPadOS Audio Unit implementation to drop. Of course as always - better good when it arrives, than early. Take care all.

I have bought Atoms, and I can tell you that it will not be used much. Limited Features: Atom doesn't have as many features as some other synths. For example, it does not offer FM synthesis or phase modulation. Atoms may not be the best choice for advanced users who need a lot of editing capabilities. If you update Atoms to the level of your praise, I will give a new review. It's nice to play with it, but all the time there is a feeling that something is missing.
@BABYAudio-official

Atoms is a physical modeling synthesizer and works a little differently than conventional synthesizers (including FM or phase modulation synthesizers). It is not meant to combine all forms of synthesis or be like a "swiss army knife", but rather to give you one specific type of synthesis that can be tweaked and edited in a number of ways. If you were looking for a general synth, we understand that you may find Atoms limited and too specific. But for the style of synthesis it offers (physical modeling of a mass spring network), it gives you very deep editing capabilities and we hope you'll discover new sounds as you dig into it. It's quite versatile once you dive deeper and can produce some weird and otherworldly sounds :)

Outersect Modeler by Tracktion - if you want physical modeling. F.'em by Tracktion - if you want the deepest FM on the market. It has 4 layers and 200 matrix lines in each layer. GHOST by Exacoustics - if you want deep FM in Vital. Myth by Tracktion - if you want one of the MOST versatile synthesizers. Modwave by KORG - really versatile synth by hardware company but it's able for 99$ once or twice a year. PhasePlant by Kilohearts - either versatile, either deep, either is able for 99$ several times a year BUT!!! It's VEEERY nasty with CPU. A group of 3 Oscillators, a pair of Randomizers and 1 additional Oscillator swiped the trial version straight to a trash bin for a long period. HY-POLY by HY-Plugins - can be incredibly deep and flexible for moderate price. GUI is a bit... uneven but it's over saturated with features. One of underrated Developers along with Apulsoft and Toneboosters. Continua by Audio Damage - may seem flexible but not the same deep as competitors above.

Baby create fantastic, good looking and sounding things and must be applauded for the shimmy in making a physical modelling synth that sounds good. But Atoms needs more detailed editing control and a more explicit UI/UX connection to the fundamentals of physical modelling. The real estate wasted on the circular pretty-but-dumb display is infuriating. This is where I should be exciting my resonators intuitively (see Physical Audio's instruments). Reason's Objekt does a fine job with out being over complicated, especially the capacity to route external audio as an exciter. Brian Clevinger is beyond brilliant and Plasmonic is exceptional, even with the steep learning curve and skeuomorphism.

@GenMathias

I'm a bit unsure where this stands. When it comes to physical modelling, the engine seems rather limited: a bit one-dimensional, with no customisable options. Baby Audio thought they could jump on the physical modelling bandwagon and offer a cool, user-friendly plugin at the same time. But in doing so, they fell short of creating a genuinely useful physical modelling engine, while delivering a synth that can't quite compete with more traditional virtual analog or wavetable synths
@TheJonHolstein
8 ай бұрын
I mostly agree with that. It is possible to make a physical modelling engine that uses a model that sounds very organic, for familiar, but not quite sounds, like a wind instrument that doesn't quite exist, or a drum that doesn't quite exist, or a bowed instrument that sounds somewhat like traditional bowed instrument but not quite, or a plucked string instrument with similar properties. Or to model something that exists, and thus offer a flexibility in playing that sample based instruments simply can't offer (at least not in real time). I think those are the areas where physical modelling makes most sense. Allowing deep editing quickly makes physical modelling overly complex, and complicated to get anything meaningful out of. But because of the specific model used in this instrument, it doesn't sound familiar yet different in that organic way that is widely usable. There are those that have built instruments similar to what this model is based on, but they are typically used in horror movies or some esoteric sci-fi soundtracks. If the point was to model an instrument like that, I would focus a demo on that niche, as an alternative from buying similar but sampled based synths from Spitfire and Soundpaint. The demo they did for Sonicstate at Namm, had me intrigued. But from the demos I have seen now, to me, it seems way to niche, with only a couple of more widely usable sounds, and then not something unique enough that there aren't other products out there that offers sound similar to those, but also other more widely usable sounds.
