Excellent work again! I watched all of your videos during the last days and I must say you delivered an amazing output of high quality stuff. The translation of the "Befehl zum Angriff" is flawless. I am from Germany and I have the divisional history of 24.Panzer-Div. from 1962, where the order is printed in the appendices, so I could compare it with the original text. The visualising of the order by using maps was really great work. As you didn't list the divisional history among your sources, I would guess the order was printed in translated form in one of the books you mentioned? The reenactment part looked good to me (yellow cavalry piping on the uniforms-yeah!), but I'm no expert on this. For as you might know, this isn't a popular hobby in Germany at all (especially regarding WW 2 stuff). Just one tiiiiny bit of nitpicking: as you stated correctly, the companies where called squadrons in the division, due to it's cavalry roots. Therefore, it's battalions where called "Abteilungen", the traditional name for battalion-sized units in the German cavalry. Georg Michael was by all accounts one the finest young officers in the German army . He was no professional soldier but from the army reserve. The divisional history (written by another of it's young officers, who was to become supreme commander of NATO ground forces in Central Europe during the cold war) praises him whereever he is mentioned. On the photo showing Hitler handing Michael over the "Eichenlaub" in spring of 1943, he can be seen wearing two tank destruction badges on his sleeve. As this was long before the invention of the Panzerfaust, this meant he destroyed two tanks in real close-combat. Thanks for this video and please keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, and I learned a lot from your comments. I've never seen the original order and frankly wondered where the translated copy I have seen came from. I now know. I shall have to find a copy of the divisional history - I don't suppose you would be able to scan the copy of the order and email to webmaster@handgrenadedivision.com for my files? At any rate, I appreciate all the comments here, and especially yours.

Small channels like you are one of the many reasons I stayed on KZitem. You are passionate in producing contents and give all out effort. Although there used to be many channels like you, most of them when reaching certain threshold, they produce content not out of passion, but out of supporting themselves financially since editing and writing contents eat a lot of their time. As a result, they are presented dilemma of whether to continue producing content on their own pace or producing it on schedule. This is excarbated more when KZitem adjusted their monetization policy, resulting on quality contents produced less since content creators are less incentivized in producing more quality content. Instead, some of them decided to churn low effort content that cater to lowest common denominator, since it garner them more views, engagements and ultimately, ad revenues. While I can't deny some content creators produce contents for a living therefore they have to produce it on schedule, I am dissapointed that this platform encourage mediocrity by rewarding low effort contents and punishing quality contents. While there are exceptions to this, it really saddens me. All in all, I hope you continue producing quality contents. While I can't deny when you reached certain threshold, you have to invest more time and energy to produce contents which may resulted in your real life work to be affected, I am sure that you can manage. P/S - I am sorry if the sentences are unstructured, I am not a native speaker.

Great vid! It inspired me to do my own research in order to complete a picture of that day from the soviet's perspective. I hope you pardon me that this comment ended up that huge. 1. Location: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shchigry,_Kursk_Oblast - Shchigry (Щигры) According to Google maps: 51.866667, 36.933333 - Shchigry (Щигры) 51.820859, 36.984376 - Semenovka (Семеновка) 51.844045, 37.168715 - Trukhachevka (Трухочевка) 51.794464, 37.121318 - Petrishcheva (Петрищево) To be honest I didn't expect these villages to survive all these years, but here they are! 2. Soviet war journals entries: Thanks to the Russian Ministry of Defense many of the Great Patriotic War era documents were digitalized and made public. In that area axis attacked in-between left flank of the Soviet's Bryansk Front and right flank of the Southwestern Front. I was able to pinpoint that Leaping Horseman soldiers depicted in that video were attacking positions of the 160th Rifle Division of the 40th Army. Here is a quote from a 160th Rifle Division war journal ( cdnc.pamyat-naroda(.)ru/pamyat/Передача_006_КП097Р-С14/462-0005252-0079/00000168.jpg ). I hope you excuse my poor English translating skills: "By the 28th of June 1942 the 160th Rifle Division with assistance of the 529th Artillery Regiment were defending Dubrovka (Дубровка) - Trukhachevka (Трухочевка) - Morozovo (Морозово) - Gamovo (?) (Гамо’о) - Sukhodol (Суходол) - Prudok (Прудок) in order to prevent enemy advance towards river Tim (р. Тим). The enemy amassed large numbers of infantry, tanks, artillery and planes in an area Shchigry (Щигры), 1st Ivanovka (Ивановка 1-ая), Semenovka (Семеновка). At 3:15 28.06.42 divisional first line of defense came under heavy artillery barrage. At 4:00 250-300 enemy diving planes assaulted divisional infantry and artillery positions. At 6:00 enemy tanks launched an attack with infantry following them. Our infantry and artillery were able to withstand 2 enemy tank attacks. At 7:00 up to 300 tanks with assistance of 150 planes launched an attack against 443th Rifle Regiment. Planes were able to destroy our artillery while enemy tanks began to exploit that initial success, motorized infantry was driving behind the tanks. Our infantry and artillery fought fiercely, causing heavy enemy casualties, but being heavily outnumbered by enemy infantry, artillery, tanks and planes, their stubborn resistance was finally crushed. At 8:30 following a Commander’s order divisional regiments began withdrawal to a river Tim defense line. Up to 3400 enemy soldiers and officers, 60 tanks, 10 armored vehicles, 5 planes, 23 cars, 14 artillery guns, 15 mortars, 21 machinegun were destroyed in this battle. During the 28th of June 1942 divisional east flank was withdrawing eastwards under the heavy enemy tanks and planes pressure, while the left flank (636th Rifle Regiment) continued to hold its position. The enemy was able to slice divisional ranks in two pieces, resulting in Divisional HQ being cut off from 636th and part of 537th Rifle Regiments. While battling with enemy and causing him casualties divisional regiments were withdrawing eastwards and by the 3rd of July 1942 crossed the river Don (р. Дон)." I was also able to find a 40th Army war journal with a more detailed information of that day, but I won’t quote it here in order to not overstretch this comment even further. I can try translating it, if there is interest in it. According to it, at the end of the day 160th Rifle Division regrouped on a new defense line Teply Kolodez (теплый колодезь) - a ravine 2km west of village Belovskie Dvory (Беловские Дворы) and caused “heavy enemy casualties in infantry and armor, destroyed up to 30 enemy tanks, downed 6 enemy planes.” Divisional Commanders Colonel Anashkin (Полковник Анашкин) and Comissar of the regiment Oleynik (Полковой комиссар Олейник) were stripped of command due to poor performance. Speaking of the 40th Army HQ, it was evacuated at 17:00 under the enemy tanks fire. 2 cars with radios and HQ property were able to escape, while the 3rd one with secret documents, maps, cypher code and other stuff was destroyed by a tank fire, killing Lt Moldavsky (Лейтенант Молдавский) - HQ Commandant.

Loved the video! I noticed you said that, as part of the German cavalry tradition, units resembling the companie-level were designated as "Squadrons". I myself am nearly one week away from shipping out in the United States Army as a Cavalry Scout, and it is U.S. tradition to designate Cavalry battalions as "Squadrons" and companies as "troops". For my own curiosity, did the Germans refer to their battalions as "abteilung" or "bataillon" or were they designated something else entirely? Thank you very much!
@HandGrenadeDivision
4 жыл бұрын
I believe someone corrected me on that very point in another comment. Infantry, tanks, etc. had battalions (bataillonen) while cavalry had abteilungen. Thus 24 PD kept the abteilungen terminology. Good luck with your service.

Another brilliant video, in fact probably the best one so far, certainly depth wise at least. Question. Would have anti-partisan fighting differed differently as we see here on the eastern front? Certainly orders wise there’d have been great change I’m certain however tactically speaking I’m unsure. I know the Germans generally favoured sweeping attacks with usually an inflexible command due to the nature of the work however the basic organisational structure of field units is also a bit of a grey spot for me too.Cheers.
@HandGrenadeDivision
4 жыл бұрын
Anti-partisan work occurred in a lot of areas - Eastern Front, western Europe, Italy, Yugoslavia. Some units were trained specifically for it - i.e. Security divisions. Units of locals were also utilized in most theatres. It's a deep and complex subject, and not a nice one as the Germans operated under a very different understanding of international law than we have today. Reprisals were considered legal - meaning they felt they could shoot unarmed civilians as a legitimate response to partisan activity, which they usually referred to as bandit activity (we would call it terrorism today). Lots of stuff to try and get one's head around.

Probably one of the reasons (poor orders) the Commissars were disbanded in 1943. They were more of a militia anyway. I think one thing that made the German Army so good was their decision to base their small unit tactics around the MG 34, 42. What is the American/British equivalent of the German Abteilung? Good video

Commissars were political officers responsible for the loyalty of the specific formation to the party as well as its communist education (assisted by the Politruks). Abteilung in english would be Battalion I think.

Great video as always, were the platoons commanded by senior sergeants at this stage in the conflict?
@HandGrenadeDivision

The Germans always had NCOs in charge of platoons as they relied much less on officers. The British tried to do the same, and invented the rank of warrant officer class III so that they could also use NCO platoon commanders, but they didn't like it and commissioned all their NCO platoon commanders in 1940.
@T.S.Birkby

HandGrenadeDivision Cheers, having a SNCO command a platoon with years of experience and section level control and leadership seems better suited to the role than a newly inexperienced commissioned officer. Do you think that it enhanced German small level performance than compared to their Western counterparts?
@HandGrenadeDivision
4 жыл бұрын
@@T.S.Birkby I'd be hesitant to generalize, but the consensus among historians seems to be that the Germans were quite good at the tactical level. I'm sure it varied according to specific units and particular times. As for "better" or "worse" than the British or Americans, I think it is always safe to say the Germans did things very differently than the others. Sometimes it worked, other times.....not so much.
