Pro tip. Breath out when you underwater and then breath back in when you resurface. Its the constant cycle you must take.(holding your breath will make you instantly light headed you NEED to breath out) Always wonder why you be extremely drain after swimming STOP holding your breath while you underwater.

For example his arm sweep is pulling him down into the water not through the water (you can really see this with his lower arm). All that being said he did pretty well considering he’s not swimming regularly.

Haven't looked at the Combat swim for a while, maybe 5+ years. It has changed a bit. I swim the over arm side stroke, in part because no one else does it. It is more for speed and not for stealth... Top side arm comes out of the water and over the top more like freestyle, turning it into a long axis stroke. It is a lot faster than the combat swim. I can swim 1000 yards in under 19 minutes. It is a bit more efficient for swimming longer distances, but with the over arm that splashes, it isn't good for being sneaky....

I learned this stroke as a youth with the Red Cross Swimming program. However, I was taught to remain on my side for the whole stroke and only do the scissor kick. They haven't taught it for a long time. I loved this stroke because I used to swim on the lake of my mother's friends cottage and used to face the shore and look at all the cottages down the shoreline. By knowing how to do all the strokes (was a competitive swimmer), you get to exercise more of the muscles and increase flexibility. If you only do freestyle, for example, you don't know what you are missing.
@emmamemma4162
2 жыл бұрын
I think the stroke you are describing is the regular side stroke (as you said, it has you on the side throughout the whole stroke). I also love swimming side stroke in the lake or river! It's a lovely old-timey stroke that is also great for water rescue (holding on to the victim with your top arm). In the combat side stroke, however, they seem to be aiming for more streamlining and less time spent visible above the surface by going into prone position during the kick- and glide phase.
@SharonPiano8
2 жыл бұрын
@@emmamemma4162 The scissor kick used in the regular side stroke has the top leg kicking out towards your face and the lower leg kicking backwards, then scissoring the legs together and gliding. For towing in water rescue, I was taught to do the scissor kick in reverse, but I don't know the reason.
@emmamemma4162
2 жыл бұрын
@@SharonPiano8 That's really interesting! I always put my left leg forward no matter what side I'm on, it's just faster that way for me. I'll be teaching a junior life saver class tomorrow, and we're going to go through the side stroke+towing (today was combat side stroke). I will ask them to try top vs. bottom leg forward when towing and when not towing and see if they notice a difference.
@SharonPiano8
2 жыл бұрын
@@emmamemma4162 I am hoping you will post your findings. I have a feeling that the reverse scissor kick is stronger for towing or that the top leg doesn't get in the way if you kick it back. As for putting your left leg forward regardless of the side you are on, it may be that you have developed your kick that way. If you try doing the opposite, is your kick weaker? In freestyle, for example, I used to breathe every two strokes, only breathing on the right side. I consciously changed to bilateral breathing (every three of five strokes) in order to bring balance to my body and to be able to see both left and right while open water swimming. I notice it helps both arms work equally hard, whereas breathing only on one side makes the arm and leg on one side work harder than the other arm and leg.
@emmamemma4162
2 жыл бұрын
@@SharonPiano8 You're spot on with the bilateral movements. I used to scissor kick in the breast stroke, so there is certainly some kind of small imbalance in my body. I've taught myself to do the breaststroke and crawl with symmetrical breathing- and kicking patterns, but I have yet to force myself to do sidestroke with the right foot forward. I almost don't move forward at all kicking like that, so I need to start from scratch doing only kicks until I get it. Not kicking the person you're towing sounds like a good reason to do the reverse side kick. Unfortunately my students had some kind of friday-brain thing going on, and it was all play no practice today, so I don't have any findings to report.

If Suunto had a Garmin’s HR system and charging system, it’d be a better watch if you replaced the strap but I’ve had my Forerunner 235 for five years and I almost never wear my Citizen Skyhawk or Promaster. In order to obtain a competitive swim score, make sure to maintain at least 1:40 per 100m (:50 per 25m). Also note that using goggles that cover both your eyes and nose helps significantly. This way, water won’t trickle down your nose due to the angle you’re swimming at. Also, be aware that some proctors won’t allow goggles for SEAL/SWCC PSTs, so it would benefit you to practice the swim without them.

12:27 is passing? I’m going for seal right now, I went to my first PST in Minnesota today with my seal instructor and I was terrible and I’m trying to perfect my kick, I can glide good just kicking and finding out when to breathe is what I need to focus on. The guys in my age group, had 9:30 times and I watch a lot of videos, I’m trying to be a better swimmer.

Technically a 12:30 is a pass but if you want to get an enlisted contract for seal you’re realistically gonna need a 9:30 preferably a 9:00 or less because getting a contract is so competitive. Just “passing” is not enough

Also just based on what you said, try breathing out while underwater so when you turn to breath all you have to do is inhale, not exhale and inhale. I personally just do a scissor kick I don’t do the flutter kicks like he did in the video, I personally don’t think it helps you go fast and it tires you out for the run. If you want more tips check out the navy seal Reddit, people are always posting about swimming tips. Right now I’m at a 7:40 swim, trying to get an officer billet

The day this video was uploaded was the day I went to Florida for a retreat. I went swimming for the first time in 8 years... man I use to be good at it for the most part and now I got to go my swimming down again. But had to cut it short because of a break in that happen to my friends/brothers hotel room. $260 - 2 ID cards - 1 Debit card - 2 wallets all gone...🤦♂️

I know this is late but I do have a question, I am going for SO, I already pass the test and all, but when I do thr combat side stroke, it feels like all my power is coming from my arm I pull down when I rotate my body(the first arm I pull down as I am swiming), and I was wondering if you had any tips to help or if I'm doing something else wrong?

You need to pin those shoulders to your ears on the recovery. Also, the flutter kicks after the scissor kick are gonna fatigue the abs, which may hurt your sit ups performed later in the PST. But I know that you know these things, just wanted to give you a hard time

If you’re a guy like me who’s a senior in high school who’s deciding between SEAL’s in the Navy and PJ in the Air Force who’s thinking of going to college first and has been training for several years, what would you recommend me do?

Honestly it depends what you really want. PJ's are obviously mostly medical whereas SEALs are mostly operators. You can be a SEAL HM and that would be your focus on medical stuff. You could also do SARC (Special Amphibious Recon Corpsman) and work with the USMC Recon/MARSOC units if you're wanting to focus more on medical while still being an operator of sorts.

Hey man, just joined the Navy and I'm looking to earn an EOD contract before I ship out November 26th. I'm pretty comfortable in the water and a pretty strong swimmer but I have never done the combat side stroke before. I start my training this Monday 2019 07 22, any tips or advice to mastering this stroke in 3 months time or less? I'm fairly confident in all other areas of the PST as well but I know I need to master this quickly.

+Devin Greer some crucial tips I can offer you...aside from all the BS “his sidestroke is not good” comments. 1. Try to make it across the pool (25yds) in 3-4 strokes of the CSS 2. It is a “resting” stroke...so act like it 3. Don’t expend all of your energy swimming...instead try your best to keep a neutral spine and glide in the water

Austen Alexander not putting down on you in any way and didn’t mean to sound like an asshole. I could have worded it better, “stroke isn’t great”. But anyway I’ve just been taught by some awesome guys and perfected my stroke and dropped my swim from 11:55 to 923 in a month.
