The Catalaunian Plains was DEFINITELY a Roman Victory. It wasn't exactly decisive, but Atilla's army failed to breach and ended up RETREATING

I can't exactly say why, but I liked this video even more than your previous ones. Your narration was on point, and I really liked your take on Leo's whole, passing a speech check and convincing Atilla to please not sack Rome. I look forward to seeing more from you.

Thank you for an excellent video as always, its good to have you back. The most amazing thing about the late Roman Empire is how difficult it was for them to raise armies of any large size. It points to a complete breakdown in the flow of labor and capital. I find this time period fascinating and now I know a bit more thanks to this video!

All can be avoided if my man Gallienus was alive and being an emperor instead of Valentinian III. He was another Stilicho who traveled in his empire for defeating any threat of the empire, effectively let Rome survived in the 260s. Apparently, they should work together and arrange marriages as an alliance, and Gallienus fought Vandals to recover Africa while Aetius fought any form of threats in Gaul, while integrating Germanic people to the Roman society like Gauls and Britons before. When Attila attacked Gaul in 450, they both would join with many Germanic troops to defend Attila and had a medium chance for crushing Attila in a battle, effectively killing Attila, and still used the advantage to recover some lost territories in Hispania and Britain. Therefore, Rome would survive for a longer time if this had happened.

Note that there's also a known theory that explains the pope's involvement. It's possible he really did speak to Attila but he bribed him to turn back. That sounds more reasonable that him giving a speech about morality

@@thucydideschannel I didnt find much on English wikipedia but according to Dutch wiki, the Catalauni were a Gallic (Belgian) tribe that lived somewhere near the area of Chalons-en-Champagne in northern France, east of Paris. it is specifically mentioned by some historians the Huns may have made camp at La Cheppe, where there was a Gallic hill-fort, or oppidum in Latin, that had been abandoned for several centures, measuring about 30 hectares in area, which would provide a defensible position for Atilla. But there is no direct archeological evidence for this theory. The fort walls are visible in the landscape to this day. So one can only imagine what they would have looked like 1500 years ago. Probably a very enticing position for an army on the move in strange lands, that knows its about to be attacked. If you google translate the Dutch wiki pages on this battle or the Catalauni you can read for yourself. I'm afraid if i post any links this comment will be snipped.
