I am interested in testing out a pair of tube monoblocks for my two channel rig, but my speakers are not efficient enough (88 db sensitivity). In a big, open concept room, don't see how my current rig would benefit from tubes. Maybe a tube pre??? Nah... not gonna feed the squirrel. BTW, AGD was one of my favorite rooms at the Tampa show. I’m so glad I watched this video because I thought this amp was a hybrid vacuum tube/SS amp? It’s NOT, but the output stage housed outside of the chassis is clever and convenient for repairs or replacements related to the output stage! Some forum reviews are claiming it sounds as good or better than their 300B amps which is impressive, but I wonder how it compares to the inexpensive Purifi class D amps with Sparkos opamps. The Purifi amps are much cheaper and they are supposedly really good. I’m considering Apollon amps w/Purifi module. Anyone compared AGD to Purifi amp offerings? yo mikey! speaking of innovation ,if you don't know it yet you should really check out the late and great alexander howard dumble's history. he was an 80's guitar amp maker with the best ears in the business , he would measure guitar's frequency response and build an amp to serve it the best way. every amp was made for one guitar player, it would take him months to build an amp he was obsessed with the chassis electric interference. he would cover the circuit board with epoxy so no one can copy him,and no one does it till this day decades after his death. his amps are currently sold for over 100k a piece if you can get one. srv used his amp on "little wing" and eric clapton still preforms live with a fender clone that dumble made for him 40 years ago. carlos santana, joe bonamassa and many others still use his amps live every night .good designs are forever.

Class D will always produce harmonics that require filtering in the output. I don't see how any audiophile would use Class D for a serious system. I hope people understand that the "tube" in this amp is not really a vacuum tube, but is merely a small solid-state dual-sided circuit board inside a glass enclosure (not under vacuum) with some LED lights to make it look like a heated vacuum tube. That is not to deny that the solid state technology uses gallium nitride devices, but it has nothing to do with vacuum tubes. Some Audio magazines have referred this as a "ploy" but the only thing that bothers me is that this amp probably costs twice as much as it should if it were made without the fake tube. Yes, in theory it could make the amp easier to upgrade, but I find that to be a stretch, and likely to be very expensive even if an upgrade became available. A lot of Class D amps have circuit boards internally that fairly easy to upgrade, buy simply detaching and attaching some ribbon cables.
@OCDHIFiGuy
11 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, how any audiophile could think a class D amp uses an actual vacuum tube is a ridiculous thought. This is an Audiophile amp. Not for beginners that would think it's a "vacuum tube class D". Whether you "get" the design or not is irrelevant. You don't understand this market. I sell $80,000 amplifiers. So this one at $8K is peanuts. I sell $6K power cables. It's why we call it High End... ever heard of a $200,000 Corvette ?? $90K wristwatch ? Yeah, same buyer group. Next, this amp IS in fact made in a black box as well for $2500 less....

@@OCDHIFiGuy There are some Class D amps with tube input stages, which is what I thought this was when I first heard about it on another KZitem channel. Personally, I would find that very interesting. So I was initially fooled (and I have been an audiophile for over 50 years), and didn't want others to be fooled also. You correctly pointed out that basically the same electronics can be obtained from the same company for less money without the glass enclosure in another model (I hate to call it a tube), something the other KZitem channel did not do, so I give you a lot of credit for that.

great idea for the electronics, but why inside a tube? for looks ? really they glow with an LED? in my experience putting electronics inside an enclosure like that leads to failures long term, low heat dissipation being the main culprit. Inability to replace a failed single component you have to replace the whole amp section. Seem to me to be a gimmick. regardless of how great they may sound putting them inside a tube envelope is silly and has zero benefit and potential long term issues.
@OCDHIFiGuy
10 ай бұрын
Lol. Guess what I'm gonna say ? Then don't freaking buy them... lol. So far, I've had only one tube failure on a mark one, and we are on Mark 3. It's GaN class D, so heat is not a concern. The Amp section outside the chassis makes the repair a 3 minute affair by the end user. No shipping back to shop to have someone else rework/resolder your "single component." The tubes are covered under a 3 year warranty. Try that with a conventional tube, lol. Separating the amp section from the power supply is ALWAYS a better idea. Do you want to argue that ?
