Electronic engineer here. The properties of a cable that can affect performance are capacitance, inductance and resistance. How much effect each of those has largely depends on what the output and input of the components you plug them into are. There can be some em pickup, but any sort of shielded cable should eliminate that. Anecdote is worth nothing, it can be coloured by all sorts of biases. You should be showing your working here. I have noticed diferences on the very cheapest cables when plugging into a guitar, but only the very cheapest. Active devices with low output impedance and high input impedance should largely be immune to any shift in properties of a cable. Show me numbers to convince me otherwise.

Thanks for watching and chiming in. I totally agree that an antidote is worthless. It becomes a meaningless response to something we're struggling to understand. My goal for this video was to share my experience with cabling that wasted money, time and even creative excitement. There are plenty of videos that show and discuss cable testing. Testing, measuring and listening should be done together. What's amazing is you can have two cables test the same through measurement yet still sound different. If this is happening, what we measured didn't answer the question, why the difference. Do you think there's compounding performance anomalies that are harder to test for? It would be great to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks again!

@@wingmanstudios9385 listening is worthless unless it's 'blind' listening, we have too many biases to be impartial, even when we want to be impartial. To correctly listen to the performance of a cable you want to play a pre-recorded input from source to reciever through the cable, then FFT the result, that gives you the frequency response. you can compare, subtract etc. the 2 responses and see if there's a difference this will tell you everything about the sound difference without the requirement of a human ear and perception. If there's a difference it's down to an electrical property of the cable. People hear diferences that are not there, largely because people/musicians, hear with thier eyes. If they measure the same, assuming they have been measured correctly, they will sound the same. You'll see cable companies boasting about low oxygen cable and other complete nonsense. A decent thickness of cable at a resonable length will have negligible series resistance. there'll be shilding that gives a capacitance to ground etc, this will filter some AC away, and some indictance attenuating low frequencies. but the frequencies it filters is down to the values of capacitance and inductance. The capacitance, resistance and inductance is distributed along the length of the cable, but we'll assume uniform manufacture along the length so that can be ignored. I used to be suckered into the 'expensive stuff is better' thing too, I shudder to think how much money I've spent on cables, tubes, effects etc. that if I'd thought for moment about I'd have seen through But I don't think I wanted to see through it, I was happy that I was fooled, I was happy that I hadn't wasted money retubing an amplifier that had working tubes. t was when I started building audio equiptment, reverse engineering stuff that I owned, simulating and modelling it that I was forced to mix my professional knowledge with my hobby. It was an eye opener. There's too much cork sniffing in the world of audio electronics. I have friends who claim they can hear the difference between a maple and rosewood finger board on a guitar, maple sonds snappier apparently. They can only do it when they can see which guitar they;re listening too. I've run blind testes with them, A/B recordings with only a neck change, etc. They always just get what you would by chance, yet still claim they can hear the difference. Anecdote about this cable sounding better than some other cable, especially one you've measured to be the same, I suspect is just confirmation bias, or incorect measurment. Thanks for watching and for your question. As an audio engineer and musician, I'm in the trenches with this stuff every day. My clients rely on the studio to work including any gig I play. Between these two things, there are a lot of cables. We also do high definition audio in tracking and even 768K off of analog mix down. Well performing cables make a difference across the board and at higher sample rates. At every level you hear sample rate changes down from 768. Recording starting at high resolution with proper cabling always sound better even when compressed. What's my point? Will you hear obvious examples listening from youtube? Probably not. In my experience, poorly manufactured and engineered cables behave as if you are compressing to KZitem when you use them. Even though the cables spec out the same, you still hear a difference. Thank you for the request, let's see if we can't put something together even for download in the future. Thanks again.

Thank you for this video. Besides my good friend, it’s nice to hear another recording engineer talk about the merit of cables and not just a buncha “crazy audiophiles”. When my system got to a point where it was resolving enough to hear the differences a cable can make, I realized I needed to put a bit more $ into my cables. It may be a more subtle change than an amplifier or speakers, but it’s a noticeable difference nonetheless. I was a professional touring musician for years too, where cable quality is an absolute necessity. I remember the first time replacing and upgrading the power cable to my amp and the speaker cable, and I was pretty amazed at the detail and tone that changed for the better. Thanks again. Why leave it to chance? I can point to dozens of examples where my choice to buy the better option meant my technical environment didn't fail under pressure, AND delivered better results - sound quality, reliability, data rate or purity were all provably better by doing this. Then adding filtration on the power lines and on my ethernet. Everything snapped, especially the video. Folks thought I had bought a new screen. Nope, just cleaned up the power and cables. (coming from someone who wasted tons of time himself) I understand that nuances like this exist. However, I believe time would be much better spent creating a great song or focusing on music performance. In my opinion, retrofitting your entire sound setup with $1000 cables for each input/output would offer less improvement than perhaps two extra hours of practice on your fundamentals. There are huge diminishing returns to consider here. Regardless of the truth or fallacy of any of these issues, time would be better spent elsewhere. Also, consider that if you bought cheaper cables, you might afford a few extras in case one becomes faulty. But if you invest in all Mogami cables for your MIDI, 1/4 inch, and aftermarket adapters, how much money will that leave for purchasing the instrument itself? I learned early on to work on and repair all my equipment myself. I think a wireless soldering iron costs around $40-50 these days. Also, I didn’t disagree with any of the audio quality facts, etc., just that, in my opinion, time spent elsewhere would be more beneficial to any musician.

If the cables are you vascular system then the transformer you should be using is the heart. It will regulate and condition the power before it ever reaches the cables or your devices. DON'T spend thousands of dollars on individual power cables, DO spend thousands on a quality transformer. We run a mains transformer that connects to power conditioners with aftermarket high quality power cables. Devices are then powered by their default cables from the conditioners. Clean consistent power is more important than the cables used and you only get that from a transformer and conditioners. Cables just carry the power they are given; they can degrade the signal but cannot improve it.

Guitar players add 50% distortion with pedals. Why worry about the "sound" of cables?
@wingmanstudios9385
4 ай бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. This is an awesome question. The purer the tone / signal to the amplifier, the sweeter the guitar tone with a clean or distorted setting. You hear this more with the tube amplifier. Tube amplifiers accentuate harmonic overtones from the original signal. This will make your distortion tone absolutely awesome. Even more awesome if the distortion is coming from the tube amplifier and not a distortion pedal alone. There is not a lot of signal coming out of the guitar, even if the guitar is active. Therefore the cable needs to perform with no spectral rolloff. Keep on rocking my friend.

I found this video to be I guess “funny”. There is no doubt that you can throw money away on cables. The irony is that the amount of money “wasted” on cheap cables is a molehill vs. the amount spent on “premium” cables. Let’s work it out together… $999 for “expensive” a 10 pack of 10’ xlr cables … $60 for a 10 pack of same length and gauge/spec cables at Amazon. Will the expensive ones look and feel better? YUP. Will you be able to pick out which cable is which in a mix? Nope. But how about just level matched sides by side? Nope. But… but… I have 32 years of buying and using cables of all varieties/price points. My advice is very simple. When at all possible, buy a cable that can be easily repaired. This means molded ends are the least preferable. (This being said I have old school, classic Radio Shack cheapie molded plastic 1/4” unbalanced patch cables that are 25 years old and work. Do I use them anymore? No, because they’re stiff and dried out and antiques… but did I get my money out of them? ) Can I hear the differences between the “worst” and “best” of my cables? If I DO, it means one thing: the cable is “broken”. I have a KZitem channel built very much on scientifically, methodically attempting to find, and present differences between audio gear. My work has shown me that sure, a lot of the time I’m able to zoom focus and find unique properties of gear… but it takes precision engineering to do so. The differences are minute enough so often, that UNLESS I’ve gained the samples up to a degree (that doesn’t happen when ACTUALLY using the gear as intended), you cannot pick them out. In a blind listen. So no argument that cables sound different. But “different” is irrelevant… you can’t pick it out of a blind listen in an “all things being equal” scientifically conducted test… it isn’t going to be relevant to the recording you’re making. The difference between old and new strings on an instrument is several magnitudes greater. The difference between two different mic capsules is like comparing the sun to a single match… The $10 cable that lasts 2 years and can’t be picked out in a blind test is a better buy than the $100 cable that lasts you 20 years. (Especially when you need LOTS and LOTS of cable.) My favorite cable? The one that works, has the right connectors, is the right length…and is hanging on the hook ready for me. The audio dgaf if it’s a monoprice special, or a beautiful boutique showpiece. Getting as hung up on cork sniffing cables… is for somebody who’s lost the plot. Insulting people that invest in cabling based on basic, sound economic principles is silly. I get YOU have a lot of money tied up in cables but all that hilarious psychological analyzation should be spent in front of a mirror. Reality and your feelings are at odds bub. Buy the best wire/connectors you can afford and don’t look back. So many things have so much more impact on your recordings than cheap cables will. Dont sweat it. I’ll take a great mic through cheap cable all day long. In my respectful opinion.
