Long ago I was an electronics technician in the military. I learned about RADAR waveguides as transmission lines and calculated reactance, capacitance and inductance in them as part of my education. It has never occurred to me that the same principles apply to acoustic frequencies. Very interesting. And, yes, I feel sick now. It helped a bit when I reduced the video window to a small corner of the monitor and watched from across the room.

Great video! Could you touch on things like port and subwoofer positioning to control cone displacement within the chamber, maybe touch a little bit on the fluid dynamics within the chambers or port. Why compression in aero ports functions better over slot ports for example, or some information on the acoustical relationship between amp and sub, dampening, how impedance functions in a relation to cone displacement the order of enclosure etc. It would be great to hear some thoughts in series/paralleling or vicecersa or combination down multiple drivers and how best to acheive balance of resistance between all drivers and how an amplifier internaly copes with impedance changes over frequency. Keep it up mate good to see you back on making videos!

6th order parallel bandpass is my favorite. I made it so the ports where next to each other. Slot ports and sub faced inverted motor up, dust cap chamber had a long 2.5" port thatwent along back wall and cornered along the top out the front, the coil chamber was 3" and was a U shape below dustcap port. Sub is a Memphis Audio HPO 15D4 @2ohms on a Crunch DRA850.2 not sure rms watts.

Thanks for the info & bob Ross white board drawings 🔥 Can you elaborate more on the difference between the 4th/ 6th / 8th series and parallel bandpass? And how the ratio affects size and tuning ? Does Audio Dynamics have high sensitivity subs with good frequency response with decent Xmax and FS of 30-35? I am looking for one or two subs that will like 1500 W RMS. My Q40 ( G37 ) has a metal wall separating trunk and cabin with a ski pass thru only. What would you recommend for best frequency response and output enclosure and sub wise?

Hi. really good explaination, I understood everything, but I have 2 questions. First: In WinISD it is possible to simulate "ABC" enclosures (like a series-tuned 6th order bandpass + port out the rear chamber too like on the parallel one). It is an 8th order enclosure, or it needs to count the acoustic orders differently somehow? If I understood correctly your presentation, let's start with the 6th order series tuned bandpass, then + port outside the rear chamber = inductive reactance which brings it up to 7th + interaction = 8th? Second: I know that passive radiator is basically a port = inductive reactance. I had a Philips HiFi which have the "wOOx" speakers (I dont remember the model number now...). On the front side of the speaker were the active woofer and the passive radiator (wOOx woofer), on the rear side was a regular flared aeroport. If I am correct, the passive radiator was tuned for the low bass and the regular port for the higher bass (the port was short + the enclosure itself was not too big for the woofer's size), but I am not sure that I understood this sepeaker system correctly, because one chambered enclosure with two tunings is strange for me. So how I should count acoustic orders at an enclosure like this Philips wOOx?

it's great to understand the design characteristics that define each order. how about a part 2 that gives everyone a clue as to WHY one would use one design over another. Please do this on Hexi Base. Oh BTW you did not mention Open baffle (it is different than the theoretical infinite baffle) and the Bi-polar (no I don't mean crazy) design - I think it might be a form of Isobaric loading. last but not least. there is the wonderful Maggi. Ok I'm going to go old school here. Back in the day we quite often ran an entire system off of 1 two channel amp, the nicer amps were capable of 'tri-mode', highs in stereo and your sub(s) bridged mono, because of this setup we had passive crossover networks. For a while I ran a 6th order parallel tuned bandpass, but because of the coil (inductor), it was considered a 7th order bandpass. How does an inductor fit in when calculating orders?

Had to pause vid to ask a question. What’s the point of a second order then? Is the resonance of the box the only thing we’re looking for?
@pim_kahlert
5 жыл бұрын
With a 2nd order (sealed box) it is easiest to achieve a low Qts factor. A low Q(ts) gives more control over the driver movement. This gives best dynamic response and the most accurate sound reproduction. However the efficiency is usually lower. Also, a lower order has a lower roll-off on the ultra low frequencies. With good design, a sealed box hits lower notes than a ported, although the maximum SPL is probably lower.
@jus1taj

@@jus1taj You could use a (free) program like WINISD to calculate box size for your desired Q and frequency response. As long as the box isn't to small, a sealed box, with the right driver, is hard to mess up though. Have fun with your first build!
