Is the LS27 very holographic and warm sounding?

I have compared Marantz AV8805 to LS27 in my system and the ARC embarrassed the Marantz in every respect. I have owned the AV8801, AV8802A and AV8805. The AV8801 is not nearly as capable as the AV8805. As much as I love the Marantz prepros they simply cannot compete with ARC. Your experience is very different from mine. To be fair to the viewers here I wanted them to be aware that I strongly disagree with your statements. Different ears, different rooms, different gear and cables. Those things all contribute to the end user’s experience.

Rob, a short reply to your excellent comment is "you are right". I've changed my opinion since then. Let me tell you what had happened. After I returned the ARC the Marantz didn't sound the same anymore. It had the sparkle in the upper end , but the stuff that high end equipment brings in - imaging, stage and a different kind of resolution was now missing. I've taken a bite of the proverbial apple and there was no way back. So, I started to look for older reference ARCs, but those still ran a good $5K at least. You see , the LS28 horrified me because of its price tag (don't remember, $7K or $8K) and I expected it to perform 10 times better, which it was not. But I started to look for other brands with similar characteristics. A lot of people mentioned reference products of Pass Labs. Their X line, as I was told by a few old timers, outperforms not just REF ARCs, but their most expensive REF products like the REFs with a separate power supplies. Those, as you know cost $20K-$30K. So, I looked for those and got an X0.2 Pass Labs. It is a preamp that comes in three enclosures: a control unit, two power units all connected by external cables. The top of the box was reaching my naughty box, weighing a good 70lbs! So, it is the heaviest unit in my rack, weighing more than the power amp! and it cost me below $3K. Now this unit doesnt have all the bells and whistles of the AV8801, but it sounds holographic, reproducing such details I had no idea they were in the recording. So, a short version of my reply is "you right, I was not ready at the time of shooting that video to accept the reality that high end preamps are better than even good processors". It is just those high end preamps dont have to cost an arm and a leg. If I shot that video with the Pass Labs X02 I got a week later my conclusion would have been different simply because of better performance than the RC and its much lowered cost used (their MSRPs are the same, the ARC LS28 and the Pass Labs X0.2, it is $10K). Thanks for the comment.

Is the Marantz still your “reference” pre amp? I also like HiFi Buys! How often do you have to replace the power tubes in the Ref 75?

No returned it. The ARC is good, but for that sort of money there are plenty of more attractive deals, especially used vs new. I went with a Pass Labs X0.2 (for less than half $) and now a DEQX PreMATE+, a complete opposite of the ARC. The ARC makes sense if you dont care about the money and an ARC fan for life.

I've got NAD 1155 preamp for £150 and the sound is just sublime.I don't understand what 10k preamp could do so much better for that price. Most important is the source.Good DAC with decent pramp and power amp will give %85-%90 of what those insanely costing units in my opinion. You just need to find the good synergy and that is it.

@@beslemeto I could put my signature under your statement. But 2-3 years ago, not now. What changed? 1) the 10%-15% difference sound pretty good to me, actually you are too generous, it is 5%-10%, if even that! But I will take any little amount of difference for any amount of $; 2) You are mistaken just as I was before about the "Good DAC with decent pramp and power amp". To me the DAC is the most important, yes, then the preamp, then the power amp. Reason? What the DAC makes the preamp opens up and the power amp makes that audible. Believe me, I could and tried making the DAC+ the preamp of my system. But a DAC without a preamp sounds lifeless. I went through a few preamps since this was posted: a Pass Labs X0.2 REF , then an Australian DEQX PreMATE+, which is a technological marvel, IMHO. kzitem.info/news/bejne/uqBtmXughJOQlYI

@@VladVonGrigorian Did i say that the preamp is not important? The reason DAC is the most important is, because it is the beginning of the analog signal and without a quality and suitable signal there is no way you will like the sound. For example the preamp cannot put naturalness in the sound. This comes from the DAC and for me it is one of the most important things to enjoy lifelike performance .In your case you have liked the preamps you have used, because they were good match with the rest of your components.Believe me you can match a lot of cheap gear and call them "technological marvel".The most important think is you found what works the best for you and you enjoy the sound.Enjoy!

I'm just a bit perplexed on the comparison.. yeah it's ways fun to do these videos but one is a multi channel pre pro and the other is a dedicated 2 channel line stage. This coming from a very happy Marantz av8802a owner, there's no way it should best the AR. Not saying it isn't an awesome product, but the marantz is built to do alot more than just reproduce audio
