Bill Withers - Just The Two Of Us
In the golden years of audio, enthusiasts had the opportunity to listen to various equipment prior to making a vital purchase decision. Nowadays that is not possible with the scarcity of audio shops, Covid-19, social-distancing, and the cessation of listening opportunities at audio stores. Thus the rationale for LP GEAR's comparative videos.
In this video, we have devised for you to listen to two high resolution low-output MC cartridges: The Audio-Technica AT-OC9ML/II and the recently released AT-OC9XML. To eliminate volume bias, we adjusted the output volume to be the same for all cartridges.
Notes: We have often wondered why reviews do not compare the legacy product when a new version is released. Is the new replacement really an improvement over the previous model? If yes, great. If not, then what's the rationale? To raise the price? In this instance, we surmise that there is really not that much difference between the ML/II and the 9XML to justify the new release. In fact we feel the ML/II has better balance and organic expressiveness. True the 9XML is initially impressive with its dynamism but it can be tiresome to the ears. In fact a customer had commented that he likes the aggressive sound. To those with similar preference, they would prefer the 9XML over the ML/II. I like shimmering instead of splashing cymbals. Delicate instead of coarse. If so, go with the ML/II. You'll also save a tidy sum in the process.
