These reviews are incredibly helpful for me as a streamer. Also do a ton of research on gear to improve my stream. Love that you don't add any post processing to the microphone unlike another popular reviewer. I'm in need for an audio interface. My current setup is mic,preamp,into my motherboard; it sounds terrible without adding a ton of digital processing. I'm surprised how good the 2040 does in handling plosives. Would make a good mic in my arsenal.

Glad you enjoyed the review and I agree, motherboard audio is less than optimal and will not handle the signal from a preamp well. (Of course not all motherboards are the same, but high quality recording is not a priority for most of the manufacturers.) Thanks for sharing your setup and good luck in the sweepstakes!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Mic reviews are challenging as voice plays such a significant role in the audio presented. I try to include mic comparisons, physical tests, and to show how flexible a mic can be. I found the 2040 to have good build quality and to be eq friendly. I would likely make only a couple of small cuts and one small boost if I were going to use it regularly. Thanks again for watching and good luck in the sweepstakes!

I thought audio is where most creators need help starting out, so this giveaway package seemed like it would help the most people out. You can process your audio in real time using either hardware (like a dbx286s) or software plugins. I use OBS Studio for my audio and video and route both to zoom and other conferencing apps. That way you can filter out background noise and EQ your mic for the broadcast, or any other tone you prefer. Let me know if you'd like to see a tutorial video on this. Thanks for the question and for watching - Good Luck!

This mic seems to have potential as an entry level VO mic and I am already familiar with the capabilities of the Scarlett series Audio interfaces. What I am curious about the most is its ambient noise rejection capabilities. The internal shock mount has not proven to be all that effective based on other video reviews but that is not that critical. I also use Streamlabs OBS and would like to know what processing you applied or if there is video demo already available. Thank you.
@askdrtk
3 жыл бұрын
The AT2040 could be a good option for an entry level VO mic as the frequency response doesn't have any drastic variances through the vocal range (which is also why I find it "EQ friendly" - no drastic boosts or cuts needed to adjust tone). It does a good job of rejecting ambient noise IMO- I had the AC running and my PC fans were spun up during recordings of unprocessed audio which for me also means without noise reduction. I also didn't find it picking up mouse clicks, pushing buttons on my stream deck, and it reasonably rejected keyboard noise. If your mic stand/boom arm are not well insulated from the floor/desk/table, I would recommend an external shock mount for critical VO applications to help cut down on the potential need for retakes and/or clean up in post. I used a few of Izotope's Neutron 3 presets for my processed audio demo - nothing customized for the AT2040. The processed audio demo in this review is meant to help show the potential tonal range of the mic. I am working on two step-by-step "how to process mic audio" tutorials that features both free and paid options to create an audio chain. I am doing one for dynamic and one for condenser microphones - when you don't have an ideal vocal booth environment. These will be up on the channel over the next month. I appreciate the questions and thanks for watching.

Not that I'll win. I've been researching this mic the last few days. I have a Scarlett solo. And I've been. Looking at the AT2040 the Røde podmic and the Shure mv7. In Australia the AT2040 is still in pre order stage. But I'm waiting for the release I'm in lockdown any in Sydney so I'm going know where soon. Not sure if the shops are even open. I'm sure the winner is in need of the set up. So best of luck. And kudos to 1000

These are all pretty solid microphone choices. I haven’t compared the other two myself yet (I have a Podmic coming for review) and I think the MV7 has taken some criticism for not sounding like the SM7B, but letting it stand on its own, the MV7 seems to have a clear sound from what I’ve heard. Thanks for the comment and wishes. Good luck in the sweepstakes - I don’t seem to win giveaways either, but I keep telling myself someone has to…lol.

@@askdrtk in Australia you can get a podmic and a WS2 wind filter cheaper then the AT2040. But you mentioned the look off the mic is now a think as video it a large component now. Even in radio. My brother was telling me the new AT2040 should be better. He tells me off about the mics in use. But I use lapel mics and live stage mics for gaming. My brother is the one that told me I need had to get a interface. And stop using the sound card. So I got a 2nd hand scarlet solo. But just like life. If it's not onething it's another.

Thanks! How well does it reject reflections from the walls (i.e. room echo)?
@askdrtk
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Looking at the wave produced by a 3 second burst at 500Hz from a tone generator in my studio space, the amplitude of the initial snap was recorded at -11dB and the first reflection had an amplitude of -59dB. Keeping in mind I have sound absorption material covering about 50% of the walls with hard floor and ceiling, I would say it rejects reflections well (I used a lower frequency as my absorption material is less efficient in this range vs higher frequencies). In regular use, I don't find echo to be a problem with this mic and I don't apply any de-reverb processing during recording. Hope this helps out. Thanks again for the question and for watching. Good luck in the sweepstakes!

I've found the AT2040's frequency and dynamic response curves to be "processing friendly" - not requiring any drastic alteration or correction. There are many good free and paid options to build your audio processing chain. I have two tutorial videos (one for dynamic and one for condenser mics) coming that show how to process dialogue audio using both free and paid tools. Of course tone is a personal preference, but I thought a tutorial might help out as a starting point. Thanks for sharing and for watching!

I can see that, the PD-70 is rated at 20-20kHz, but looking at the response graph it has a roll off below 100Hz, a boost between 2kHz and 10kHz and then rolls off below flat by 16kHz - looks pretty similar to the AT2040. Hope I gave you a chuckle with the “FM” radio…lol. Aside from specs we can measure, microphones, and their tone in particular, are such a personal preference. It is difficult to recommend any one mic for everyone, but I hope the tests, demos, and comparisons I do help provide some idea of what to expect in a real world situation. The AT2040 response curve is quite user friendly for fine tuning the tone- cuts do seem to work out better for EQ imo. In general I think we are fortunate to live in a time where there is so much good gear to choose from without spending a fortune. The 4i4 is a pretty solid interface (review video is going live on Monday) and I have been a fan of some of Tascam’s gear over the years. My DR-60D-mkii gets quite a bit of use in the field.
