As a "high-end" manufacturer of audio components, GAS Co. was continually approached by "golden-eared audiophiles" claiming the amplifier or preamplifier they owned clearly sounded superior to any of the GAS Co. products we were producing. I would always invite these individuals into the sound room with their preferred audio component and proceed to connect it to the switching system. I would have them select a comparable GAS Co. component that I also connected to the system and then carefully adjusted both components with a precision AC voltmeter for equal levels. Before the testing commenced, I would give the audiophile the remote lanyard--a small handheld box with a toggle switch labeled A or B. I always told them that the "A" position was their piece of equipment and the "B" position was the GAS Co. equipment. After exhaustively auditioning the two components, the golden eared individual would always have a litany of subjective terms that negatively described the sound of the GAS Co. component such as: "overall dullness", "lack of transparency", "ill defined bass", "irritating midrange", "shrill highs", "lack of depth", "unstable imaging"..... ad nauseam. While the audiophile was espousing these opinions, I would bring the level of the music back up, then casually walk over to the components, switch off the power to the GAS Co. component and ask the audiophile to please toggle the lanyard switch between A and B. Unbeknownst to the audiophile, I had connected the switching system exclusively to their component only. During the test when they switched from A to B, the sound audibly dropped-out during the switching process for a few milliseconds cueing the listener that something had changed. When the audiophile realized that I had clearly demonstrated that their golden ears were not golden at all, they would quickly disconnect their component from the system, and while stomping out of the listening room, turn around, and, depending on how invested they were in believing they had golden ears, generally espouse a litany of profanities directed at me. Don't shoot the messenger! David Riddle

And before you type a hasty comment, as a random self-proclaimed audiophile that may come across this video, think before you type. Really consider what evidence you have that one cable is better than another.... Look closely I am not arguing that there is not better equipment. Believe me, I have sat and compared stereos for years. There are some amazing receivers, and there are some really bad ones. Same with speakers. But when you get down to things like power cords, you're gaining nothing for your system. Nothing at all. And when it comes to speaker cables, as long as you have the proper gauge and no interference with the circuitry it shouldn't be an issue. It's rare that speaker cables are not sufficient. Even if you are using regular Romex for electrical work. You might be able to pick up an audible difference in a $500,000 stereo system fully cranked up using special measuring gauges. But I haven't seen that much of a difference to justify the extreme cost. What I am saying is that people spend thousands of dollars on something and want to justify it as a good purchase, and that's fine. But there's nothing there. Except snake-oil. You look around at some of these guys sitting in front of their stereo systems, with bare floors and bare walls. No room treatment. And they pretend like they know everything about sound. It's a bit funny. And I only mentioned it because there are people pretending they know things they don't. Well I'm here to burst your bubble.😀 My stereo is just as good as yours. Prove me wrong. ( and I got mine all at Goodwill) I'm kind of half-joking here. Don't get me wrong there are phenomenal systems. But there are diminishing returns. And the source material is what is most important. The same thing happens with guitar players, often seeking 100 pedals just to find that one sound that evades them. And if they don't find it, they convince themselves they do. Because after all, we want results. We want to hear what we want to hear If you want to get a Hi-Fi system I'm here to tell you you can do it for under five hundred bucks. Hands down. You just got to look in the right places. And just ignore the tone Chasers. Half the time they're making up woo woo that has no basis in audible reality. And after all, we are after audio, not speculation. If it sounds good to YOU, it sounds good enough. Great video, music to my ears. I was an electronic organ tech in the 80s, very high end digital sampling church organs. We had one in a Catholic cathedral and one in a modern protestant church right across the street. Catholic church had marble, stained glass, etc. Great organ accoustics. The protestant church had carpet, 8' acoustical tile celings, padded pews, and drapes floor to ceiling. The Catholic organ sounded like God. The identical model across the street sounded like a calliope. No electronics we threw at it helped, very expensive reverb units, etc. Acoustics are more important than any other factor in a system. Cables don't matter at all unless the termination is bad or you don't have shielding where needed or not enough gauge on the speaker wires. They are completely insignificant other than that. But tell that to a flat Earther.

It's ridiculous to say cables don't matter they do. The people that post these videos know they are going to get views and the comments section is going to go off. The fact that the poster is advocating Bose and how good it was and he could hear things he hadn't heard. Bose had everyone tricked when they brought out the little cubes and Sub, most non audiophiles thought they were fantastic where in reality they had no mid bass and upper midrange. To my point, the biggest variable in this pursuit is people's ears, and this guy is a great example, on one hand he's saying lamp cord is just as good as a $1000 speaker cable and on the other hand he heard things that he never had on a Bose system which is fine if he can't hear the difference between that and a high quality system with affordable cabling and room treatment. Sure it's no good throwing cabling at an inferior set of flawed components in a bad room, but get good quality affordable components in a treated well sorted room then affordable cables can and do make that system sound better. As an example if you have listened to copper cables and silver plated copper or solid silver I can pick that treble sheen of silver it affects cymbals the most, depending on the system they won't always sound better but they definitely sound different. The most pertinent thing this gentleman said was about serotonin levels affecting what we hear and he is 100% correct, if you are feeling bad and have low serotonin and are feeling low, it doesn't matter how good or expensive your system is it's not going to sound good to you, in fact you would swear it isn't the same system you heard when you felt good, of course it is. It wouldn't matter what you changed when your low it still won't create the magic and this is where people chase their tails. It's pretty simple really if you can't hear a difference when you are feeling good don't buy cables, don't buy expensive audio gear but if you do and are confident it's not placebo , by all means buy good quality ( it doesn't have to be ultra expensive) audio gear and cabling and enjoy the music 🎵🎶 and don't get caught up in the never ending upgrade path, especially if it's because your system sounded off one day when you are low just wait until your serotonin is high and you are feeling good and the magic will be back. And don't be like me and get caught up in all the debate, all that matters is what you hear.🙏 Finally I think the poster of this video was high on serotonin when he heard that Bose radio 😊

Okay, I'm an audiophile, who has two engineering educations, one in audio engineering, and one in electrical(the top tech in my music school was also and elect eng), who's currently working towards a Master's in Health Sciences in Audiology so I can volunteer in the third world. I also have the ability to 'see' sound through a biological phenomenon known as 'synthesia'. Let me just reference a study, they took 2000 working audio and music professional's. DJ's, Live sound engineers, audio techs, venue owners, etc etc. Only 2% of them are actually able to discern digital/analog. That means that we are NOT ABLE in general to discern the difference we 'feel'. Believe me, there IS A DIFFERENCE. I can see soundwaves. Is it worth $1000's of dollars. NOPE. Typically the difference you get from a $1000 amplifier and a $10,000 amplifier is negligible. You can certainly do without it. But those high end cables DO MAKE a difference, is it worth $100 a cable. No, not in my opinion. But you STILL HAVE TO USE SOMETHING OF QUALITY. Not just any cord. I just wanted to reference that study to let people know their situation.

I'm with you. There's a lot of snake oil and over priced things. Gotta take stuff case by case though. For example, I added a power conditioner to my PC / Headphone setup. Didn't do much. For laughs, I picked up some heavy duty, shielded power cables off Amazon for $30 each. To my surprise, some of my gear did benefit. I wouldn't spend hundreds on 'better' power cables though. But it makes sense, if I'm using a device to clean up my power, then keep it clean to the system and avoid interference. Don't know about plugging them right into the wall expecting something to happen. Again in my case, this was a pretty busy system with a lot of wires close together.

Also, I never gives my opinions on the sound itself, as an electronic technician, I can only speak about how well a particular device is made, but how they sound is a matter of personal choice and tastes. As for the wires, as long as they are big enough not to mess with the signal, they're fine. US made marantz stuff, as well as anything made before 1979 is usually great, just like sansui, pioneer, onkyo, sony, from the same time period .

I I totally agree with everything you say in your video. I have a pretty decent sound system, using Amazon basic speaker cable, into a 30 yr old pair of tannoy speakers, a 10 year old marantz amp and CD player, the main source though is my 50 plus year old garrard turntable. Here in the UK guys spend a fortune on cables, including mains cables. Don't they realize that all UK plugs have a fuse in them . That's an inch long piece of wire the thickness of a human hair. What's the point of spending a fortune on cables if they all end up passing through this fuse. I suppose if you spend hundreds of dollars on cables you are looking for a difference and will hear one even if no one else can hear it. Great video.

Also what affects audio is adjustments of a turntable, cassette decks eg cleaning of heads with qtips gently with isopropyl alcohol, lube with head lube and demagnetized the tape path with a demagnetizer wand. The storage of records and tapes matters and placement of speakers and room furnishing. Also a sub provides the lower bass sounds. Your comment is the Perfect comment, at least in my humble opinion, although I must confess, this comment was hastily typed. I cannot for the life of me understand why people engage in exactly what this intelligent man ( dare I type/write very intelligent?) describes as "Tone Hunting". This term encompasses the actions of over-the-top Audiophiles/Audiophools perfectly to me. Well done sir! I hope that you do not object to my using your term (Tone Hunting) in the future, as it really fits so well! I love it for its sheer simplicity! Going back to academia, a decent quality audio amplifier is Not supposed to influence/alter the original signal being passed through it in any way at all, with its sole function amounting to an increase of the input signal's amplitude, period. Amplify - enlarge the amplitude of the input signal by an order, or several orders of magnitude, (strictly dependent on the selected gain factor) and present the same exact signal, with the selected, exponentially increased amplitude, at the output of the amplifier 99.999% the same as the input signal. No coloring, no warming, no alterations of any kind, to the input signal at all, just simply an amplified, original audio signal. Without getting into too much technical jargon, such as: damping factor, slew rate, total harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion/channel separation (in the event of a binaural (stereo)) audio amplifier, crosstalk, etcetera... The listening environment, just as you stated, is of paramount importance. The sound reproducers/speakers are equally as important as the listening environment is. I apologize in advance for this long-winded comment, however your "Tone Hunter" term ended up catching me up in just the right mindset, at the right time, about the right topic (a topic that is close to my heart). It is getting ridiculous, as of late, with the financial exploitation of perhaps unwitting consumers that may fall victim to buying "enter the name of the unicorn dust audio product here: ________", being presented/pushed as critical or important to in-home, accurate, sound reproduction, by nothing more than slimy snake oil salesmen, doing their very best to separate good people from their hard earned money for zero audible returns on their investment(s). Thanks for letting me get it off of my chest. I ended up writing a novel of a rant here today... however I do feel a tiny bit better now. Fred

Hey Carpo have you tried any bookshelf or tower speakers made in the last 10 years or so? The Sony STR-DH190 can be had for $180 new or around $100 used, great for a 2.1 or 2.2 system. Great sound quality. Klipsch RP line is great. I use the RP-150ms. And you can buy a used BIC america sub for around $80 that will blow your socks off. Anything else is just money thrown out of the window. I mean speaker placement and acoustical treatment of the listening room will have a way,way more significant impact on sound than fancy high end cables. Although shitty pseudo budget "high end" cables which are eagerly sold by some store chains once in a while can realy f up your listening experience.

take it from a professional almost everything this gentleman said in this video is correct. now lets take a look at what speakers are made of and do the math. a couple of sheets of MDF the cheapest wood on the market a little bit of steel & aluminum some magnets copper wire a few paper or poly cones crossovers and some screws. the amount of material used to make a set of speakers couldn't even build a 5x5 shed and that costs 500 to 800 dollars. six year's ago i built myself a pair of 15 inch 4ways with high quality driver's for 1100 dollars my brother-in-law spent over 9000 just on his speakers alone and can't understand why my 2000 dollar system makes his sound like something you get at a Walmart. i run a technics su-v98 with a crown xli-1500. my next door neighbor has a set of Klipsch forte iv with the Velodyne DD18 sub after hearing my system he comes over 3 times a week to play a few songs.. today it would cost 1600 to build a set like the ones i built. when i was at crest audio we built special speaker cabinets for Phil Collins & Metallica out of 13 ply 3/4 baltic birch the wire inside of them is 14g tinned copper electrical cord rated at 300v. regular speaker wire is around 30-50v for 100 watts rms anything after that you are using electrical cord some with fancy end's and calling it speaker cable. anyone who spends over 2500 on a FULL brand new stereo system needs to go back to SCHOOOOL. the problem with audiophiles is their ignorance is no match for their stupidity they think wine taste better in a crystal glass meanwhile it comes out of a regular glass bottle.

About a year or so ago I was personally interested to hear the difference between two affordable single ended interconnectors. One I already use a Van Damme and purchased a Sommer Cable. It's in everyone's reach its not big bucks. The Sommer cable was sent back, it sounded shit. Cables do sound different from each other they really do. Where the real issue is the highly over inflated prices. Now I have banged on about two sets of interconnects that will cost you around about $25 each but just to let you know I do own more expensive interconnects. Basically what I am getting at is sometimes a relatively affordable cable will actually do for most folk and there is a clearly noticeable difference between them. Look I gave one of my brothers a Cyrus 2 integrated amp with its PSX Power supply okay and he could not tell the difference between using the PSX and not using it. Now I can clearly hear the difference, its subtle but it's their and it is happening, it does not change the character of the sound it cleans the sound probably by reducing the s/n ratio so stuff sounds a bit more separated. I shall tell you where there is a massive problem in the HiFi World and that is when a dealer/shop/distributor lie. Now back to the Sommer Cable, the dealer said it needs running/burning in, well he forgot to consider that me being the customer I can get in contact with the manufacturer of which I did and they let me know that the actual Sommer Cable that I had purchased has no need for a running/burning in time, it is ready to go.

Hey, I love VU meters, especially blue ones. Yeah they are useless but they look cool and retro. I always used zip cord for my speakers until I bought some of those humongous copper Monster Cable speaker cables back in the '90s. It's funny that the cable was the thickness of my wrist but terminated in a pin the diameter of pencil lead. Then I moved on to AudioQuest for interconnects and speakers. After a long interlude of downloads only on the computer, iPod, and iPhone I got back into hifi last year. Now it's inexpensive but functional cables from Crutchfield or Amazon. It's strange that the audiophiles cringe at any tone controls but think that raising speaker cables off the floor will have the same effect. But if you look at the hardcore headphone guys they actually use equalizers to customize the sound to their taste.

Man, spray some deoxit in your volume / pot meter... you will get rid of the scratching... spray it on your RSA and speaker connectors too and the sound will improve especially with that vintage stuff not having gold plated connectors. Truth is somewhere in the middle, my DAC interrupted when I turned on the lights in my room... it appeared I was using an unshielded RSA audio interconnect... replaced it with a " digital" shielded 75 Ohm one (costed 30 usd). Now, I can play music and turn on/off the lights and it sounds better too (yeah just a little). You do not need to spend ridiculous amounts on cable, but you will not regret having some basic quality stuff in place (often decent connections will oxidize less; oxidation can lead to high measurable resistance on the connector).

I understand your perspective on this and the very real aspect of diminishing returns, but when you reduce your argument to equating lamp cord with, at the very least, a few brands of high end cables that I have experience with, it undercuts the issue! Tone chasing is an aspect of the audiophile, and is not necessarily a bad pursuit, who wants to tweak their system to satisfy their personal idea of what reproduced sound should be like. I agree that far too many cables are extremely similar in their performance, albeit within certain parameters. Some cables can mask detail, or accentuate certain frequencies or even suppress them in some cases. What I have found over the several decades of experience with a vast array of gear and cabling, is that the company’s that actually utilize technology to enhance the ability of the musical signal to be transferred between components with the least amount of damage done, are definitively superior. Transparent Cables can provide an easily discernible improvement in most systems and you absolutely do not need to get their megabuck versions to hear a difference that can draw you into the music. They provide a dramatically reduced noise floor, increase dynamics, improve definition and control and allow the music to relax and sound closer to real instruments being played right in front of you. It is addictive and a valuable tool to utilize if maximum enjoyment of your music is a priority!

"GAS" - Gear acquisition syndrome. Something I and many others have fallen prey to in the music production hobby. i.e. Never being quite satisfied with the gear we own, always looking to upgrade or buy something new. GAS seems to plague audiophiles as much as hobby musicians -- though somehow I've managed to avoid it in my own hifi journey, where I've been perfectly happy with my Senn HD-600 headphones and studio monitors for decades, and more recently, a Fosi amp + Kef speakers/SVS sub. You don't have to spend a lot to get incredible sound -- though I'm always looking for new ways to make sound, which can be an endless rabbit hole. Thankfully the "woo" snakeoil hasn't invaded the creation space anywhere near the degree it has the music consumption world. The gullibility and lack of critical thinking in the audiophile world is reminiscent of what I see among conspiracists, religious fundies or political extremists. One test will prove anyone wrong: Listening (blind) A/B test carried out ten times and controlled by an audio engineer not known to the one taking the test. And of course I agree with you! Also, most tracks/songs from the recording studio and/or from the mastering engineer has been treated with a low-pass filter, and that is often around 16Khz - 18Khz. So any speakers that specifies above 20Khz are not worth the money just because of that. The same goes for the bass, it usually has a high-pass filter set at around 20hz - 50hz. What has been cut out regarding high and low frequencies from the mastering studio is not there, and so you can buy whatever audio system, speakers and gear you like, but it won't get those frequencies back, ever.

There is the look of a system and then the performance. If people have money and want things to look pretty that is their right. If people also want their system to look like crap visually but it sounds good in their opinion that's great also. There is not really a wrong or right to it but a SPECTRUM of where different audio enthusiasts enjoy being at. Cables are overhyped just like speakers are overhyped. You can have an amazing amp that makes 100 dollar mediocre speakers sing and also have 5,000 super high quality speakers underpowered by a crap amp that sound terrible. If we really want to get after (snake oil) there is a much bigger elephant in the room. It's all these bullsh*t companies saying they have 1,000 watts with cheap amps and all that crap. People get suckered into that junk all the time. They measure when everything clips for 1/2 a second and blows up and then puts that out as a number. It's ridiculous. Alot of power is lost to dissipation of heat before it converts to sound. Some of the highest end amps have maybe 15 to 20 watts of true class A power. That 15 to 20 watts crushes the so called 500 to 1,000 watters out there. Good gear costs money. Now when you buy used or older gear the cost can come down a lot. I have had Pioneer and Bose growing up along with Cerwin Vega and alot of others. I have also had really high end systems (Threshold amp and pre-amp, Mcintosh, Lexicon processor, Klipsch corner horn flagship speakers, etc.) and have one newer high end system now. I am not a big cable person. The good home audio places will make suggestions on what gives the most impact and not what is the most shiny or expensive. With audio you have the (law of diminishing returns). There is a big jump from crap gear to good gear in quality for minimal money jumps. From good to amazing costs a lot more money. For most listeners that have not heard a truly dialed in room they do not have a benchmark. It's like eating a good pizza but never have had an amazing pizza. If you never had it then you don't have a benchmark. I eat great food all the time but occasionally I have food that tastes so da&n good time seems to stop and you float in the Universe and want to savor each bite slowly and you think about that meal months to years later. It's the same with a great room setup. Lot's of them are good but some can be magical. It's all about taste too with music. Some digital music lovers like ultra clean and sterile and equate that to quality. My personal tastes I like listening to the singer as if they are in front of you in a local dive joint and instruments are in the background and you get relaxed and lost in the music as it envelopes you.

Excellent point about the wattage, I collect a lot of vintage gear. One of my favorite receivers is an old Marantz that is 30 watts per Channel. It was my generation that we started to see these overpowered amplifiers that have meaningless numbers on them.

In 2006 I presented 3 speaker cables from 3 manufacturers to a man who's goal was to show that regular electrical cable and 12 guage xbrand home depot wire sounded the same as "High End" wire. The man built a an ABX comparator for the this event and has published books on amplifier design and worked for major amplifier companies as their lead designer. As we were setting up the test he connected the cables to make sure there would be no delays from connector compatibility or cable lengths etc. He connected 2 of the cables I brought and to make a long story short found them to be so different from the "generic" cables he brought "he wasn't going to waste time with those". DEBATE OVER because I KNEW they sounded different too. The 3rd cable he took to the next DIY show and 1 person was able to identify the "audiophile" cables versus the others 10 for 10. so more proof that it can be done, only 1 person needs to hear the difference, not everyone. But the story that doesn't get told is the 2 cables thrown away by the cable skeptic who had to admit he heard a difference...drastic difference. Your tone chasing concept is correct as audiophiles regard themselves as part of the creative process which can make a mess of things. In the end you don't really know what you're talking about and you focus on the wrong things as most people like you do. When I contemplated my $800 apartment, $4,000 car and the new $25,000 (ATC SCM-100ASL) loudspeakers in my living room. It hit me that my priorities could require some adjustment. We are not all rich who say there is a difference but we have sacrificed to have the best. I started to build my own equipment, the limit of my system was the the limit set by my knowledge. I know a great deal now, I know some cables sound different (be aware most do not). And when you have a difference you then have the opportunity for a preference. Knowledge is where this hobby is so poor as people are too lazy and too religious in their usually erroneous convictions (why people get disproportionately angry at you...you should see when I play their music back in surround unbeknownst to them on a modest system 5.1 system (ie $6500) and when I correct "the mistake" the $80,000 2 channel caveman system sounds broken...because 2 channel is broken) You would think they would celebrate this new revelation but I have violated the sanctity of their audiophile religion and all they have come to believe has been torn down before them, They turn bright red, huff and leave.) The funniest thing is these 2 channel cult members always tell me is " I don't know how to do good 2 channel"....lol....when I just blew up their life by setting up 5.1. LOL, my hamster can setup 2 speakers and I don't need to take him out of his ball.

Until I see double blind study myself at will remain skeptical, that's just me

@@carpo719 Well in the end it just isn't that important to study. :) I just wanted you to know you don't look too smart waiting for a test that has been already done. The 10 out of 10 x 2 result was single blind in that the presenter knew what cables were being tested but did not know which cable was A or B from trial to trial be compared to X. Like I said the man running the test was at the top of his field and wanted the same result you believe in. Only one man can run the 100 in 9.58 seconds and not everyone has to run 9.58 to prove man can run that fast. This trial was done at the Midwest Audiofest in 2006. Look it up then you will have proof.

To me i dont care about the system, what makes me an audiophile is the pressings I buy of the music I want. I look into where the music was pressed, who cut it and what makes it different than the other available versions.

I figure what matters is whether the record sounds like the original tapes.
