Great tips. We had Bobby Wolf, USAFA guitarist, on our podcast recently to talk about auditioning. Amazing how much work the band puts into finding amazing musicians. Check out the interview on our channel.

I've wanted to audition for the Air Force band. What's kept me back is that despite playing guitar for 13 years and being able to powerfully project my voice even without a microphone, I am sheet music illiterate. I would struggle very much so with the sight reading aspect. If there are aspects of the audition that have to do with improvisation, and learning a new song by listening to that, I would excel.

Well, I am a Army Guitarist, and typically with the army you are given a packet of 5 pieces and 24 hours for the guitar audition. For me, it was 2 etudes, 2 jazz standards, and a rock piece. You have time to go home and google the pieces and listen. Though I think for Air Force Guitarists, sight reading is required.
