Multiple barriers are used at the same time to ensure water is fit for usage. Only rivers in mountainous areas may have pure water. Treatment of river water is a standard requirement throughout the world. At the same time, governments have to strengthen byelaw enforcement so that polluters treat their own waste waters to a specified level before they discharge into a river. Governments are required to routinely monitor the application of bylaws put in place to prevent polluted water being discharged into rivers. Discharges from sewage treatment plants and landfill sites are the responsibility of government, while industrial discharges come from the private sector. Governments are supposed to issue stiff penalties when the byelaws are not followed. Water from Thwake dam will be treated by a water treatment plant before sold for human consumption. The level of water purification will be tested to ensure it is safe to use.

I wonder whether the auditor gen is really the right person to talk about the safety of water the dam is expected to hold.

It does not matter. Infact we need more independent bodies making noise about this damn and not the same people in charge. Do you want to drink and eat polluted water and food?

There are no two ways about it....you have to clean up Nairobi River and protect rivers from source to end. You cannot cancel the project because of this.

Hakuna 42b that has been paid. Only 16b has been paid. Riddled with delayed payments. Contractors not been paid. And there is no way by November next year the dam will be complete.

If the problem is heavy metal then I'm guessing not, I do wonder why this is coming from the auditor general though, what does NEMA have to say about this? Where is the parliamentary committee that approved this project? Surely our country can't be this incompetent

The water in this dam will mostly be used for irrigation, and so the treatment does not happen for irrigation water. Heavy metals can still find themselves in the food we eat.
