I was often called unprofessional for being unable to process voices properly... the most i felt normal was when i was working as a server at a retirement home, where they understood me and didnt judge me for it, and told me "i'll repeat myself as many times as you need, just the same as you do for us." And it made me feel normal. Then i was fired and got a new job at a bar and have had to explain that i have APD to all the managers and fellow coworkers, so if my hearing aids die(they help me process voices by raising the volume. It works for watching TV, and it surprisingly works else where too for me, and the doctor i see suggested applying the "i can hear whats being said on TV if the volume is raised" system by getting hearing aids to apply it to a more social setting.), they wont yell at me for asking them to repeat themselves a bunch of times out of annoyance... i have avoided talking to people because i just couldnt process what was being said to me and felt bad for being a nuisance and being called unprofessional for it at my last job by my old manager...

That’s how I explain it to people. When- “Go to the door” sounds like, “drop to the floor.” It’s not a problem with hearing, hearing can be 100%, it’s a problem with your brain interpreting the sounds as the wrong sounds. Write it out and it can be read 100%. People looking when they speak to you so you can read lips and them making hand gestures like pointing is especially helpful.

I think the reason people say “huh” or “what” after someone tells them something and the proceeds to answer them is that we instinctively say that to let the other person know it was hard to understand, then our brains kinda put the pieces together and we answer.
@Sakrosankt-Bierstube
Жыл бұрын
That's actually the exact reason why we say "what" or "huh" or what ever. Our brains are sometimes "to slow" at processing informations so it does what usually is needs to do to be able to process the informations. So yeah, it's basically a reflex and it's totally normal.

APD can manifest as a "delay" between the brain hearing the words and being able to interpret them. If you experience something similar, it might be a good idea to develop a habit of pausing before answering - like raising a "wait a minute" finger, or pretend to think about it. It would allow your brain to catch up, it saves on having to go "what?", and might make you appear intellectual instead of potentially annoying. 😁😉

Just to clarify: having ADHD is completely different from Auditory Processing Disorder. The two are not the same. ADHD is attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, while APD is when your auditory cortex doesn’t function properly, making it difficult for your brain to process and interpret sounds correctly. Despite it being a form of neurodivergence, it is actually closer to being hard of hearing than it is to ADHD or autism. It is also very common for people with APD to have speech difficulties because they cannot hear words properly

Everyone has the ability to have something devastating cause them to have a depressive episode. Not everyone is clinically depressed. Lots of people get joint pain. Not everybody has arthritis. Please don’t minimise things simply because you misunderstand them. The body is an insanely complicated web, there are literally a trillion things that could go wrong with it. @DRL 5002....most adults don't even know this disorder exists. There are so many newly labeled disorders today that truely are just being labeled/discovered within the last 10 years. So please dont blame your parents. My daughter & husband both are ADD/ADHD. Most doctors & Psychiatrist don't even tell you/educate you about other disorders that come along with ADD/ADHD. Ive had to do my own research along with paying attention to every detail in there lives to figure most of it out on my own. Any mental disorder is very complex & when you dont suffer for any disorders (like myself) you don't understand that world automatically. It takes love, compassion, & lots of patience to go into there world with your love one & figure it all out....so go easy on your parents/ family. Ive learned more from doing by own research & watching channels like this than from any doctor or Psychiatrist.

@@hkgehts9061 i'm sorry but that makes no sense. just because everyone has a disorder doesn't mean that it's not a disorder anymore. if anything, it's a disorder because the system we live in doesn't accept it as a normal thing and so, it doesn't treat it as such. in a world where disorders like adhd, ocd & apd were treated as in, having alternatives for people with said disorders that doesn't require them to supress their disorder then yes, there would be no disorders because that would make life accessible for everyone. sadly, we do live in capitalism which means everyone who requires a bit more care in order to work and make money "properly"(aka the fastest and cheapest way) is automatically categorized as 'other'. you're half right but for all the wrong reasons. you're truly disgusting for calling people attention seekers for actually having disorders and talking about their experiences.

I see myself in this! For ever I’ve had issues with processing what I’ve heard. Not always but a ton! I’m 51 and as a child I was constantly accused of not paying attention or not listening. I have had to learn to speak up and ask someone to slow it down or repeat. Now as a mommy and grandma, if I say something to someone and they don’t acknowledge I’ve spoken I ask. Hey, did you hear me? And I am willing to repeat it once. Sometimes twice given the circumstances.

Now I think I have this because I do this so much like on the daily and people get so mad at me for it, like it’s not my fault I can’t hear you right I don’t have selective hearing either I have everything just give me a couple seconds. Also I think I accidentally diagnosed myself with this because for years I’ve been saying my brain needs to process things before I can answer but now I am right.

Guys, please remember that having a delay and mis-hearing stuff aren't the only symptoms of APD. People with this often struggle with long spoken paragraphs and will pick up very few words near the end, may hear with bits consistently jumbled, fragmented or cut out entirety. Other symptoms include being unable to identify which direction sound comes from and backround noise (even when quiet) feeling like it drowns out foreground sound. If you think this short relates to you, absolutely do some more research and make a decision on whether or not to continue with a medical professional, but don't self diagnose from just this :)

i was diagnosed with this and a learning disorder in 4th grade. they first started worrying about it when i was crying everyday in class bc i didn’t understand anything and it was stressing me out seeing everyone else in the class doing fine but me. bc of this i got bullied and it made it worse. now i have an ear piece and microphone that are connected so i can hear my teachers better. it took about 2 years of fighting to get this and it’s helped me a lot. now i’m a freshman with straight a’s and no more crying!! i also started a mindfulness club at my elementary school in 5th grade to help other kids with stress. we learned and grew together and even tho i no longer go to the school, they continued the program. i’m so thankful for all the teachers that helped me throughout my journey!

Bro I have Central Auditory Processing Disorder and I relate to this so much. I hear completely different words half the time and my brain is very behind for half the conversations I have XD Worst part is when I’m trying to hear a song on the car and can’t quite hear it. I can see by the title what song it is, but what I’m hearing sounds nothing like the song I’m listening to, and sometimes like songs I haven’t heard of at all. When I hear something I recognise loud and clear, then I start hearing the song normally, but until then, I haven’t a clue what I’m listening to 😅😅 Hearing is WHACK!!

I have CAPD as well - it is whack. Makes me glad I know sign language and I have to lip read too, since I can’t trust my brain to process it right. Also - the more background noise? Then it’s just all becomes a garbled mess.

Which would help here, do you think? Slower input or repetition? I know a LOT of teachers who pretty much repeat everything, but I'm wondering if slowing down and pausing after instructions would be better than doubling the input. "Let's grab our history books.... okay... and let's find page 394...." vs. "Okay, let's go to page 394 in our history books, so everyone grab your history book and find page 394!"
@miragestarr
2 жыл бұрын
@@JhadeSagrav slowing down would feel patronizing. I also watch what others do in that setting (what book they’re pulling out, where they turn to, what the page looks like) in that setting to fill in whatever clues my brain didn’t process well…and maybe ask “what page did you say?” - there are a lot of cues you can use to fill in blanks. Problem is alot of people are correlating their brain jumping from subject to subject as a form of processing disorder when it’s not - I have ADD and my brain getting distracted by a shiny object is different than what my CAPD does - so I’m pretty expert since I have both issues lmao. A true processing disorder is when your brain DOES process it, but does it WRONG. For me, without background noise, it’ll be a word here and there that rhymes with the one intended. The more background noise, more words get changed and can reach a point where I hear is a garbled mess that sounds like nothing in particular. That is way different than my ADD distracting me from what was said and not hearing it at that point.
