A lot of the time when words can't be cleanly translated, I like to look at example sentences to try to understand it in context. And after a couple of sentences you kind of start getting the gist based on what they've got in common. 彼のファッションは渋いね ~“His fashion is understated but stylish” 渋い演技だった ~"That was a subtle, powerful performance" あの車、渋いね ~"That car is sleek" 渋い色のジャケットだね ~"That jacket is a nice, muted colour" 彼女の趣味は渋いね ~"Her tastes are refined" So 渋い kind of has that ...'sophisticated/mature, with an understated/subtle coolness/charm/elegance' feel to it. That explanation is bulky, but is closer to the truth of what it means than any one English word in isolation like: sophisticated, refined, elegant, etc.

You're amazing. I'm a native US English speaker. Your word-level pronunciation is astonishingly accurate, but that has become common among your generation growing up with youtube inputs. Your intonation (phrase-level pronunciation) is smooth and good, but because you're only speaking in a monotonous soft voice, it lacks the full dynamic range. I only watched a few minutes each of a few of your videos, so I don't know if you sometimes speak with a normal intonational range. When you were talking about Toshihide about 17:09, you said "He's not got a big reputation or popularity". That's passable English, but "he's not got" is an awkward structure (to my ears--maybe it's more common in other dialects of English). I would've said "He doesn't have a big following". "following" has a similar meaning to "fan base". I looked at this video since I'm a music fan. For Japanese music, I like the older band Rice with the unique singer 櫻井有紀, especially the song "Air". kzitem.info/news/bejne/w2dpspyle5R1epw

Regarding 「私の趣味は渋いです」, and given the additional context of the meaning you were trying to convey, perhaps you meant to say something along the Iines of, "「My taste in music is mature」 in a way that allows me to appreciate music unlike the kind to which my peers typically listen." Or alternatively, "My taste in music is that of an old soul."; here "old soul" has a special meaning in English, meaning of one having an understanding beyond their years. That's just my guess though 🤔 Thank you for sharing information about Japanese artists. The only Japanese composer whom I knew of before this video was Nobuo Uematsu. I used to listen to his compositions during study sessions in college. When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time playing Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8, so the music which he composed for those video games invokes a strong sense of nostalgia within me. Have you heard of Andrea Bocelli? His duet with Sarah Brightman for his song "Time to Say Goodbye" is 👌. The song can be a real tear-jerker (in a cathartic way) if you are experiencing a situation where you have to part ways with someone/something.

I think your channel is going to become very popular overseas. Your English is cute and well spoken! I enjoy Gesu no Kiwami Otome and Yuki Kajiura, as well as various Vocaloid artists such as r-906 and Inabakumori. Here is some constructive feedback on your English: 16:56 here are some tips! "He isn't very *mainstream*" *mainsteam* = popular media. If something is not mainstream, then it probably hasn't been on TV. "Most people haven't *heard of* him" *heard of* = 'know about'. This can be confusing, since the word 'hear / heard' is usually for sound. But it can be used for knowledge that you have as well. "I think he is *underrated*" *underrated* = 'not as popular as he should be'
@RokkorDoctor

I find there are many words in Japanese that have no good single-word translation in English. From your description I would say (like some other commenters) that 「渋い」in this case is best interpreted as "niche", which is a neutral word (it implies your taste in music differs from the norm/majority, but isn't necessarily better or worse.) "Sophisticated", "tasteful", "refined" are other alternative interpretations, but those all imply a superior/better taste in music. Likewise I like to listen to less well-known Japanese bands. My two favourites are GLIM SPANKY, and Wang Dang Doodle (Momiji Okubo & Kahori), but also e.g. Gordon (from Nagoya), tiny yawn, the Tiger, paranoid void, おどるアナグマ, re:lapse, Blurred City Lights, リュベンス, BAND-MAID, 羊文学, Momiji & The Bluestones. Most of it is either classic-rock/blues or shoegaze/dream-pop influenced.

For 渋い in this context, you could use a few different words to describe your meaning. Niche, eclectic, retro, nostalgic. I think for your usage, the best sentence would be: My hobby is listening to niche music. As an aside, you use the phrase "Gives me positive energy" which makes sense in English, but a more modern expression would be "Gives me good vibes". The "vibe" of something is the way it makes you feel. A strange man staring at you? Bad vibes. A cool breeze at sunset? Nice vibes. The way The song ダイジョウブ is a good vibe. People can also have a vibe, aura, energy, etc. As you said, 小田さん makes you feel safe and warm. You could say "小田さん Has such a positive and wholesome vibe."

You could say you have eclectic tastes in music, literature, etc. But an eclectic hobby would suggest that the hobby itself was out of the ordinary. It wouldn’t be incorrect as such to say you have sophisticated hobbies but it sounds a bit strange. You could say your taste in music is sophisticated which sounds better. But the word sophisticated tends to be used as a compliment to others and it may come across as brash/cocky to describe yourself or your tastes as sophisticated. At least that’s the case here in the UK where people are more reserved. You have a great grasp of the English language!
