The Enterprise of Augustus Wolle: Moravian Industry and the Origins of Bethlehem Steel Talk at the National Museum of Industrial History for Steel Weekend 2024.
On July 26, 2024, Bethlehem's Moravian Church Settlements became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, to most outsiders, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania probably figures as an archetypal postindustrial 'rustbelt' city. This begs the question of how this ecclesiastical history connects to Bethlehem's well-known legacy of metal production. This talk explores this relationship through the life of Augustus Wolle, a local Moravian merchant who was crucial to the formation of the Bethlehem Iron Company, along with the better-known Robert Sayre and John Fritz.
