In which the kitchen smells like apples and the kids are smiling...we must be doing some old fashioned cooking!
This recipe is just as easy as can be, and Esther shows you around our home canning set-up and shares her tips and tricks for canning applesauce.
My (not really a recipe) recipe is about 1 bag of store cranberries to 4 quarts of cut and peeled apples. Prepare and cook the apples first, then add the cranberries just before processing.
Dolly definitely did more cranberries than I did, and hers is really good, too! She also does this with strawberries!
Please always double check your processing times for home canning. It's a great idea to have a buddy AND a book, like the Ball Book of Home Preserving or something similar. There's also a great web resource here: msuextension.or...
If you make the cranberry applesauce, let us know how it turned out!
Enjoy!
NOTE: If you want to learn more about old fashioned cooking from Esther, there are several videos on Esther's other channel, "Esther Emery." THAT CHANNEL IS NOT BEING REGULARLY UPDATED AT THIS TIME. But here are three old videos that are really good and full of information!

About the Fouch Family: We are Nick and Esther, and our three kids Milo, Stella, and Sadie. We have lived off the grid -- in the sense of not connected to the power grid -- for four years on three acres of wooded land in Southwestern Idaho. Nick is a finish carpenter working on building his own business. Esther is a writer, the author of a recent memoir called "What Falls From the Sky," and a daughter of the homesteading teacher and activist Carla Emery, who wrote "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Nick and Esther were both raised in Idaho, near where we live now, but we've also lived in Massachusetts, Utah, and California. Our kids are ages 10, 8 and 5.
