Hello! Thanks for watching, this is a new type of video/series I will be doing on strategy games I have played previously either on the channel or on my own, a few things I want to note, apologies if the audio is slightly off in places I am doing some testing, also funnily I discussed in the video how it would be lengthy but it turns out it was relatively short which in a way am happy with (each section was recorded separately), If you are interested in playing aurora itself you can check out how to install the game from my video here and theres also a ton of tutorials to help you get started: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mG-PmpeVppmkdJw - Install guide

The Ship Designer is amazing in this game. I am new to this game and I designed this week my first real combat ship. In no other game I had such an Experience form designing an fleet or ship doctrine and so on.

Totally agree, designing both ground and ships in Aurora is truly what sets it apart from contemporary games

Yea this game is truly one of a kind... when C# was in development I remember literally checking the forums 10 times a day LOL. Its decent in its current state, but IMO it still needs some performance improvements. I think a few years ago Steve said the main slowdown is fleet movements, and I think he said theres still lots of room to improve in that area. Maybe im too much of a zoomer tho

Its a massive massive step up from VB6 but it still can be taxed to the point of kneecaping campaigns of, In the review I tried to remain unbiased and present both the negative and positive side of the game, but outside of the review I do have a bias, I really like where C# is and the game overall and think it does exactly what it aims to do

@@DefranStrategy Yes its very good. I know itll never happen, but if steve put together a dev team and put some polish, QoL and optimization into it I would easily pay $100+, similar to the gary grigsby games. Occasionally Ill go into the database to delete some of the NPR civvie shipping but I think that handicaps them significantly because they use civvie lines to ship their stuff around.

@@bro918 That would never happen though because this is a hobby for steve and he intends to keep it that was as soon as he charges for it, it becomes work and something he has obligations to

@@DefranStrategy this is what happens when you develop game that should use ECS (Entity, Components, Systems) but you go for OO (Object Oriented) language like C#. You still can do ECS in C# but it's not what Steve has done. Why I know it? Because you have early to mid game boost in speed over VB version, but is slow in late game. Architecure of game is completely wrong. Changing language helped a LOT, but architecure is what is holding Aurora C# in later stages slow. Either way Aurora C# is game worth trying and I don't regret doing so. I have utmost respect for Steve for developing this by himself.

I love the game. I only get as far as my first attaack by raiders. I have yet to crack that part of the game even though I have played it a lot over the years. Still, I love building up an expanded society and I'm looking forward to having more fun setting up my colonies. Good and fair review. Thank you

I think the biggest obstacle to Aurora is the personality of its creator. There are more than enough people in the (small) community who would dig into any performance hog or UI issue, but instead of embracing them, the creator's reactions oscillate between childish and insane (like threatening to hide a self destruct mechanic for modded games in the code).

I completely disagree, at the end of the day no one is entitled to anyone elses creation, Steve has done more than enough in fixing bugs and supporting the game for the last 17 years since the first version in vb6 came out, this is a hobby for him and as soon as others are working on it not only does that detract from that hobby but thus requires him to be committed to something he doesnt want to be in that way. hes an old guy now, he has grand kids and hes not looking to make aurora more then it is now and thats okay, if you want to make aurora you can just use your own code hes never not allowed this and there are successful clones of vb6 (quasar 4x which i covered a bit on the channel). his product, his code, his decision, he shares it with us graciously and we should respect that. If you want this to change go out get those small community of people and make your own aurora using your own code.

I've never even thought of mods or clones. ...time to check it out. I agree with the, 'his game, his time, his choice.' I am a beneficiary of his creation.

Weird thing to identify as the main obstacle, almost everyone who plays the game never encounters him or his attitude at all

Sorry to ask a dumb Aurora question, but your tutorials have been super helpful- how do you set it so ship classes will pick a name from the class you assign instead of just being titled "Lion 001" "Lion 002" etc?

The thing that finally made me give up Aurora is that as I age, I can't read the tiny system font without going cross-eyed with a headache - made worse by some of the color combinations you alluded to (green on blue is particularly bad for me). You mention mods...has the author changed is stance on not allowing mods? Or are people just basically violating his licensing terms and issuing mods anyway?
@DefranStrategy

Steve supported certain mods which came to him with permission, some of these allowed colour changes of the User interface, though am not sure on current support in the latest versions if you head over the forums/discord for aurora you can find out mroe.

@@DefranStrategy Mods that change color are still working fine even as of 2.2.0 dropping - they are quite future proof to s othe future is bright (or dark, you can set it ;) ) if you search youtube for "aurora modded download" I'll explain how they work - or as Defran mentions the forum has info
