Stephen, any frustration that comes out in this comment isn't directed at you. I've been playing a little game when watching pen reviews, trying to guess the price of the pen just from the initial shot (and from the name of the manufacturer). I saw this one and I guessed $650. But then you showed the box. Oh my gawd what a box! I saw the box and the glossy finish and the gorgeous brass hinges and thought "that's a $150 box!". And guess what: my total was right! It looks like a fabulous pen. It might be a great $650 pen. But the box? I don't want to pay for packaging: I want to give packaging to the recycler. If they lowered the price of "pen + box" to $650 I still wouldn't want it unless I received it without the gargantuan box. It's probably too much to expect that somebody from Aurora will read this comment though? Appearance: I think the pen is great with the black ends: I think think they frame the main body nicely. As beautiful as the body material looks, it might be a bit too much if it went all the way to the ends. Stephen it's a nice review. You made me want the pen. Just not the box.

Ahh the Urano. I got this same pen in Fine (No. 513/888) for my 25th birthday. Fortunately I contacted a local seller who priced it quite cheap at less than 600USD. I do agree that as with all grail pens, purchasing this pen for very special events make the price worth it. Gorgeous box that came with a free bottle of Aurora Black. The Urano has become my favorite pen with the right amount of pencil-like feedback that makes me feel in control of my writing in contrast to my buttery smooth Pelikan. I now use it as a daily writer inked with the equally-gorgeous Diamine Aqua Lagoon.

Outstanding intro. Please make sure to do it again! Of all the beautiful colors, they decide to pair THAT one with lots of black? Give me a break. What were they thinking? And how about the packaging....as if that will convince anyone to pay that price. Thanks for the review Stephen.

Happy New Year, Stephen! I haven't actually been to Uranus so I don't really know what it looks like, but I do like the "cracked ice" look of this material. I need to see the pen in person, to properly judge this one, but the black end pieces kind of work from my perspective -- they give a bit of contrast that highlights the cracked ice look. The grip would be stunning if made from the same material as the body. It would have to be a pretty special pen in both performance and appearance (and maybe collection value) to make me part with that price tag though. Thanks for the review.

Totally agree re: the price. Despite the 18k nib and the piston fill, there are plenty of pens that give you those for a more reasonable price. So unless you LOVE the material or feel that the limited edition makes it worth that much more, I’d pass on this one.

Thank you Stephen for the review. I agree on the black section and end pieces it would have been nicer made of the same blue material , nevertheless a nice pen i think. The price is a bit excessive i think 500-600 would be more reasonable.

If I had to guess, I'd say that you've worn ten different eyeglass frames since starting your reviews. Maybe review eyeglass frames??? EDC, reading glasses, sunglasses, computer glasses, metal versus resin, etc. I imagine there'd be a similar price range in the wacky world of eyeglass wear. And, yes, I think Auroras are seriously overpriced. I'd consider one if they slashed their prices in half.

If someone wanted to gift me the that pen, I wouldn't say no... but Aurora in general just don't do it for me. I love the all black Talentum and want one of those... but the Optimas and the 88s just don't appeal. That material is stunning though.

"Urano" is stressed on the first syllable, as is the Greek Οὐρανός and the Latin "Uranus." Correction: Well, the Greek word is stressed on the last syllable, but the nearest equivalent in English is to shift the stress back to the antepenultimate syllable.

I really like that nib, and the black/ice combo. Limited editions are greedy BS. I suppose it's some form of reverse psychology, by demanding an eye-watering amount of money the pen magically becomes worth more.

I guess it being a limited edition they have an excuse for over the top packaging. I think that in general companies should have these fancy presentation boxes as an option. So far I haven't pulled the trigger on an Aurora, but if I ever do it will probably be an Optima, probably the burgundy version.

Here's hoping that the Pen Companies move away from these show-pony boxes and packaging. They are huge and wasteful and says a lot about the priorities within the brand.
@FrauStaenki

Well, the packaging is far to small! What about an Aurora Garage or an Aurora House?? ;-) The world is literally drowning in trash and they still do these gigantic boxes ... Is this still the way to sell over prized products? In 2018/19?? Come on ... And, concerning limited editions, 888 PCs. in a really niche market, is not a limitation.

Vecchia Guardia Stilografica I understand Aurora is a fantastic brand, definetly one of my favorites because of its classic and timeless designs and the detail that they still use ebonite in their feeds, and keep all the production, nib included, in-house. There are only a handful of brands that do so. That's why I keep buying and enjoying Aurora pens, I have a nice collection of them, the oldest being from the start of the 1930s. But don't pretend they aren't expensive, because they are, objectively.
