In the dark outskirts of Dunedin, New Zealand I just saw the most amazing display of aurora tonight after dust for an hour. Saw 3000+ pulses of light go from horizion to an exit point above us. These pulses were green like tiger stripes & traveling at the speed of light over the entire sky. All the time red purple and green aurora was stretching up from the horizion in magnificent rays all around 360 degrees. Most amazing thing I have ever seen in my 46 years. Good night.

In a different part of NY and intermittent clouds put a damper on it, but i did have a fantastic peak where the clouds cleared up and the aurora was so bright it obscured the stars. Primarily green with bits of red. Later around 10pm it had faded and parts were green and directly overhead the thinner wisps were a pale grey as the pulses of energy hit but didn't glow strong enough. It can be amazing, but i swear every time a cool astronomical event is going on its either cloudy or just really cold out.

@@davidmiller6010 glad you eventually got a good show out of it, its crazy when the entire sky is glowing a bright green. And then your phone takes a picture and thinks it's red. Hopefully the next solarflare that spikes up the aurora intensity is on a clear night so its easier to view. But in NY i swear every time a cool astronomical event is happening its cloudy, i almost missed the solar eclipse because of clouds and ended up with a thinly veiled eclipse as a silver "eye" hung in the sky. Atleast the aurora is way more frequent than a solar eclipse.

I've seen many aurora from Scotland over my 50 years of life. Mostly subtle green glows. But the odd storm down the years generates something spectacular. Last night was the finest display I've witnessed in my life yet (again from Scotland). They covered the whole sky, shimmering and vibrating with vivid reds and purples for hours. With rays shifting quickly from one horizon, overhead then to the other horizon. All this in a badly light polluted sky. It must have been mindblowing from a dark site. Exceptional.

Not only did I get to see a spectacular display, I got to hear them too! Right before the auroral oval rapidly expanded and put on quite a show (like in ten minutes it went from a nice band in the north to directly overhead) there was this faint, almost whistling sound. Kind of like a cartoon sound of wind, but way fainter and also way crisper than you'd expect, and the air was perfectly still. It was absolutely otherworldy, northern lights dancing in bands in the north then suddenly this whistle and then they surged southwards with all sorts of play.

Pretty clear and concise but you left out a key reason why aurora so far south have become less rare in recent years. Our magnetosphere is weakening, likely due to a magnetic excursion, this is allowing less powerful coronal mass ejections to have larger effects upon the Earth. Our magnetic intensity is already over 20% less than it was in the 19th century when the Carrington Event took place, a massive solar storm that took out telegraph offices due to the induction of energy. This is why in the past couple years we've had at least 4 storms that have had aurora visible into the more southern latitudes of the world. This is becoming much more commonplace than it used to be, which is bad news for our electrical infrastructure.

If the Geomagnetic storm peaked around 6PM East Coast time, that would explain why the lights in my house were flickering and our wifi router lost connection for about 5 minutes. I've been hoping to see an aurora my whole life (I'm retired) and I'm so glad I was able to last night. I didn't get the best show, but it was there. And it's so cool so many people in this country got to see this. One of the people I follow is a nature photographer in Florida and even he posted pics of the aurora last night.

The Northern lights are extremely beautiful! I would like to see them someday, but I live in the suburbs and there are now lights and trees everywhere. I would like to suggest another video for you to do and this one is interesting because I have not heard of these two volcanoes until tonight. The volcanoes that I am talking about are called Monticulo Cineritico and Barcena Volcanic cones on San Benedicto which is one of the Revillagigedo Islands off the coast of Mexico. I look forward to seeing a video about this in the future!

My friend in Tucson took a great photo. High haze here in Colorado Springs limits me to just seeing a purplish glow.

4:25 Don't worry, in my opinion 'Astronomy' is just geology of the sky. Keep 'em coming.

That is so cool! Here in Central California on the Monterey Bay, we will probably be looking at a great, grey, foggy sky (like normal) Missed so many sky effect because of the fog, but oh well.

The HF bands have been horrible the last few days but 10 meters does seem to open up from 10pm to 2am HST, mostly stations from Japan, PI, NZ and Alaska. 🤙🏻

Incidentally enough, I was outside late last night, but living on the extreme southern end of Phoenix, AZ, with a horizon blocked by the salt river mountains and having to look through all the light pollution of downtown, probably explains why I didn't notice anything in terms of colored lights in the sky.

Got some nice pics of the red aurora north of Scottsdale. My iPhone actually shows some of the details, better than direct view.
