And didn't THEY go 👍😉😘. The hemi 245 Centura's were the pick of the litter of the Aussie manufacturers "sixed" four cylinder bodied variations. The 3.3 and 4.1 Ford 6's in the Cortina's went hard, The 2.6 Marina did also. The 2.2, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.3 Torana's weren't bad but the 4.0 Centura was sensational. Especially in 4speed manual spec. Nicely equipped inside too, great car's.

My dad had one in the early 80's, probably 4th hand at least because we were poor. ;) It looked so much better than the saloon IMHO. Ours was a dark purple colour. Every weekend it carted dad, mum, me, my sister, my gran, her Great Dane, Ashley and our collie, Rocky (it was 1983) ;) to the local park with no issues. One of the best old bangers we ever had. Only issue we had with it was the 3 inches of water that would gather in the passenger footwell every time it rained. :)

Love the enthusiasm in this vid. Wiki quotes the standard 2620 cc six as having 121 hp. Also " The Marina Six used a separate front sub-frame to support the weight of the Big Red engine and different front torsion bars as well as a pair of rear radius arms in an attempt to improve handling." News to me from Wiki is the South African Austin Marina Six, so another source. But then South Africa went with 302 V8s in Cortinas, Capris and Sierras if I recall rightly. In Australia the 1500 was thought of as minimal as was the 1600 Cortina. How the UK went for pushrod 1.3 Marinas and 1.3 Cortinas in the 1970s seems astonishing to Australians of the time and especially now.

Thanks for sharing these delightful road-tests! Could tell you were grinning ear-to-ear in that six-cylinder Marina; the gear change looked more short-throw and precise than the 1750 model. Could've used a 5th gear in the six-pot, but in the early-1970s not too many cars had these as standard; even the U.S. model 240/260-Zs made do w/ 4-speeds, and a 5-speed was an option in the 280-Z. That front grille does remind me of a Corolla of similar vintage. Glad someone has preserved these two examples; Marinas were rare in the States (even w/ TV ad spots, featuring Vanessa Redgrave, I think...don't recall exactly); we got a single-carbureted MG-B engine here.

The front wheel drive edition of the E4 engine (as used in the Maxi, Allegro and Nomad) had a 5 speed box. Fun fact, the Lotus Elite, introduced circa 1975 used the Maxi E4 gear cluster in a special Lotus casing. It handled the power and gave decent shifting and durability. Leyland could have done the same and put it in the Marina.

The Aussie Marinas from Sydney's Zetland plant were better put together than their UK counterparts. I can't ever recall seeing rust on any Marina here in Australia. I always thought they were a handsome cleanly styled vehicle and full of personality. That four cylinder model was as interesting as the six to me as that second gear noise brought me back to my first and only ride in one which was a four door, in the mid 1990s in Maroubra. It felt perfectly comfortable and competent compared to any other small car from the 70s I had been in. Your trip in Australia may have been shorter, but you really have delivered in spades so far!!

Well, he'd probably Google it, and tell you what size it needed, but that they don't have Trico brand ones, because why the hell would they? I'm only 27, so many of the cars mr Hubnut reviews were dodging the crusher before I was even born, does that make me less of a car enthusiast? I love seeing them reviewed by a down to earth bloke like Ian, and hearing people's stories of their memories of family holidays or driving lessons in these cars etc in the comments. Car history isn't just from the car itself, but the people who were around during its time on the roads. In 20-30 years, i'd happily share memories of cars from when I was a kid with modern youths, not scorn them. However it is strange to think of kids 30 years from now wanting to hear about me learning to drive in a 2004 VW Golf, or getting a 1997 Vauxhall Corsa for my first car! They will probably be getting a self-driven communal car to work by then 🤣

My first car back in the early 1980s was a 1973 Aussie Morris Marina Coupe TC, with the Aussie 1750cc engine rather than the British 1800. It was white with fancy black GT stripes down the side, which ran from the top of the C-pillar, down to the top of the crease line, and forward to the front of the car. Not easy to explain, but they looked fantastic and really made the car. The engine, with the twin carbs, sounded great, and it went pretty well, too. Mine had no rust at all, and was also very reliable. It was built like the proverbial brick shit house. That's down under slang for built very solidly, indeed. The steel was very thick and strong. It was a pretty decent car, IMO, and I look back at it with affection, and I certainly wish I hadn't sold it for what I sold it for.

Ran a Morris Marina 1.8 Coupe for 3 years. Road holding and handling in standard form was abysmal but the Ford Cortina was never that much better. The car was however supremely reliable. The car was converted to front coilovers, rear telescopic shocks which transformed the handling and made the car an absolute pleasure to drive quickly. The trusty B series was uprated and tuned to produce 130 BHP. It pulled like a train. Often thought the 1.8 K series would have cured the few remaining handling issues due to its much lower weight.

At the garage that I worked at in 1977 our workshop van was replaced by a Marina pick up which came from the factory, but could not be sold to the public. It had a Rover 3500 V8 engine and five speed manual gearbox. It was originally given to the parts department who did not want it, so it came somewhat unwisely to the workshop. It was a real beast. When it came to us it had restricted inlet manifold which unknown to the management, got replaced with standard ones, it had plenty of grunt but was dreadful in the wet. We must have had it a couple of years. Sadly an apprentice crashed it into a bus stop and that was that. It was replaced by a Mini van. They were great days.

A little bit of meat on the bone for you regarding the E series engine. The Australians asked BMC/BL for engines that had more power. There were a number of people at BMC who were involved, Eric Bareham designed the power unit, Issigonis wanted an engine for his new Maxi so it had to be compact as it was transverse fitted and it was Geoff Cooper who suggested that the engine was an overhead cam to get more power. So the power unit was rather compromised, but it's pure Austin and British and NOT Australian, but it was through Australia that the engine came about. The fascia on the Aussie Marina is exactly the same as the British 1.8 TC Marina (MGB engine) which came out in 1971. The 1.8 engine was mated to an all new Triumph gearbox, which I expect the Aussie 1.5/1.7 Marina was mated to as well. In the early 80's, I came across a Marina with a Maxi engine in it, at a car breakers in Woolston Southampton and found it rather strange, I assumed some one had converted it, until I had a chat with my uncle who had worked at Longbridge and he told me that it was probably an Aussie one! Nice to see these cars have survived.

My father and I had a dozens Marinas between us over the years. Front suspension was not great but improved hugely by the telescopic shock conversion. I used Spax gas adjustable on mine and it was good as anything with McPherson struts - probably because it was close to the E-Type Jag set up. Front suspension aside the running gear, build quality and rust resistance was no better than any UK comparable saloon of the time, although as the inner wings were not structural many lasted a year or two longer than their counterparts.

I rember these cars, a poor man's Capri, although in saying that my dad had a Hillman Hunter, then an Austin Princess, Austin Ambassador. Austin Montego until he got promoted then we got a Rover SD1 2500 in electric sky blue!

13:14 Though it's a Leyland you could nickname it "Mercedes" 'cause it handles the "Benz"(Bends)!

Could tell the 6cyl didn't have the classic Marina "stirring a bowl of porridge" gear change straight away and that engine is really shoe-horned in there, only mm's from the bulkhead. Had the 1.3, 1.8, and 1.7 many moons ago, always wanted to try the Ital 2.0 but could never find one...

Speaking of big engines in small cars, the Chrysler Centura could have up to a 4.3 litre six under the bonnet. I think they were French cars to begin with. Not many of them were sold, and fewer are still about now.

I sadly didn't manage to find one. Those Chryslers are all but extinct in the UK too. I know of two.

I had an S reg 1.8 Marina. It was complete junk but there was a good car buried under the worse than bloody awful quality. (Apart from anything else, the bottom of the front doors had rusted through in less than 3 years.) It was comfortable and handled quite well. I'd really like to try the 6 cylinder. It was also the last of the lightweight cars before they started getting fat like people. Unlike the light Mk 1 and Mk 2 Cortinas it had full length box sections, a good stiff bodyshell before it rusted. On the handling, I think you might be under rating it. I bet it can out-corner an MGB.

Briefly, I had a 1980 Morris Marina 1700, which would have won the Queen's Award for unreliability and rustbucketry. On the positive side though, per force I did learn to weld, after a fashion
