Fantastic job! I’m really impressed how nice a job you are doing on such a small budget. As an 19 year old I had an Austin 1300 left hand drive and after that a tatty Wolsley 1300 Auto. Both Harvest Gold and both oddball cars really but I loved them. I still think they look great and the ride was tremendous. They were economical, reliable and good fun. Loads of them in the scrap yards in 1985 as well for parts.

Thank you, happy days! I miss the excitement of looking in scrapyards in the 80’s. Best one I went to was blackborough house nr cullompton in Devon. Amazing place. Picture a derelict mansion and hillsides full of cars from the last 100 years, ford pops jags etc many sinking into the ground. All been cleared now.

That’s pretty cool, I have some photos I took of that scrapyard somewhere. My Uncle lived in Cullompton, so if he decided to scrap his Austin in the 80’s or 90’s, there is a fair chance it would have ended up at Blackborough House. Luckily for me, he didn’t!

If I remember correctly the code 32 73 means that it was originally produced in week 32 of 1973. The week numbers start counting from after the summer works shutdown. I was working at the Great King St factory where it was produced at that time.

Your hard work, elbow grease, careful prep and paint and with some cheap new items is transforming that engine bay. Goes to show that throwing a whole load at money at something is not always necessary to turn things around. You're making a great job of the Austin.👍

That's the best looking ADO16 wiper motor I've ever seen! lol. Beware the wiper arm wheelboxes/spindles - the gear in those can wear and slip a tooth or two - that's usually the reason for the slop in the drive and an incorrect park position on the window. Sometimes you can solve it by turning the spindle 180 degrees so that less worn teeth are presented to the cable drive.

Great job as usual and that sure brought back memories of the push button washer system on our old cars. Came home tonight stuck behind a lorry and all it's spray plenty of washer water used on the way home but in and old car with push button I'd get home with my thumb indented by the button lol

Lol! yes they were painful on the fingers, especially if the knob fell off like on my mk1 cortina. Pushing the spindle out of desperation...Then washer tank would be empty within 5 seconds into your journey. So frustrating, I once even squirted lemonade out the window onto the windscreen.

Brought it from a lad in Oxford and gave it the Mrs who called it B-Bop the boogie car, she loved and adored it.. I did a total engine rebuild on it then dropped a bloody nut down the inlet manifold. You guessed it... Anyway, taught the eldest daughter to drive in it and then moved it on with a new rear sub frame to a lovely couple in Brum. After that no idea? My favorite was Lizzie the 1300 four door. Lime flower (yuck) so changed it to BMC Pagent Blue. In the 80s there were loads scrapped so interior was no prob and and I put a lot of mods on that car. Only problem was the optional electrics pack not fitted as standard with all BMC cars... !!! Your doing a great job. Hang on to it when your done . I wish I had.

Ha ha, very true! I think it was only on the first speed for the video though,! Lovely, what colour was that and was it a 2 or 4 door? My Auntie had a 4 door dark green morris 1100 in the 70’s while my Uncle had this orange 2 door. I remember going out in the morris probably when I was about 7 or 8, but I don’t think I ever got to go out in this Austin, as far as I can remember anyway. thanks 👍

It was a 4 door in grey. It was one of the early ones either a 63 or 64. I think he kept it for at least 10 years, I remember going out it it many times. I think anyone who grew up in the 60s and 70s remember someone who owned one. Also I remember my Dad borrowing a Countyman automatic, which I thought was also pretty cool! Good luck with the rest of your restoration.

As usual, love your work. Personally I would have fitted a 12 v pump for the screen wash but appreciate that a) you want to jeep it original b) you are doing it on a budget. But I think from a safety perspective times have changed from the 60/70's when you probably had time to look for a manual washer knob, pump it and be able to wet the screen enough for it to be effective, but thats just me being picky. Cant wait to see it finished and you driving your Uncle around

Just in awe at these restorations, excellent. Do you spray the bolt heads as well after rust removal?
@langranator
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks👍 yes a couple of coats of halfords silver engine paint works fairly well. (No primer) It’s pretty tough paint so should stop the rust. Poly strip wheels cleans them up well, rotate screw with fingers to do each of the six flats and the top face, then degrease with brake cleaner. If you just want the heads painted use a piece of wood with 20 or so holes drilled a bit smaller than the screw thread, wind screws in a turn or two then spray them all together in a line. Rotate wood and spray other side of screws. For longer exposed shanked bolts I use wire wrapped around the threaded end and hang from screws into a piece of wood. Spray from 2-3 angles, to coat the bolts evenly. Cheaper than new fasteners, or re-plating which usually corrodes/tarnishes eventually anyway.

Not sure you mean about Pete C and that but the interior doesn’t really need anything doing as it was in a garage for 40 yrs so no sunlight = mint inside! Body is sound but scabby, but i will tidy it temporarily, . As i’ve cut costs on mechanical bits and taking my time, it’s allowing me to save up gradually for the more expensive stuff to come, i.e proper body restoration,new panels, bodywork, paint. Cheers 👍

langranator You're doing a wonderful job under the bonnet much better than when it left the factory. Just a word about the interior, although the seats look good when you get round to it we used to clean them with undiluted Fairy Liquid and a softish fingernail brush you'd be surprised how much dirt comes off a seat that looks clean. Regarding the bodywork it's a sad fact that BMC knew from the outset that there were rust traps on the car and persisted with the design on the Maxi and 1800/2200, my father bought an 1100 brand new in 1967, had it undersealed prior to delivery and it still rotted out in five years despite it always being garaged and dried off if it was out in the rain no matter what time we got home. You are wise to save up for a decent body restoration. Good luck.
@langranator

Thank you for the advice. I tried cleaning the seats the other week, 3 times with some old meguiars vinyl cleaner someone gave me and they still feel sticky. So I’ll try the washing liquid , good idea thanks. That’s incredible about your Fathers 1100, that must have been very disheartening...They might aswell have just made them out of cardboard by the sounds of it. Thank you very much
@philnewstead5388
4 жыл бұрын
langranator I did forget to say once you've used the Fairy Liquid on the seats whilst it's still wet wipe it off with a damp cloth, with washing up liquid being a light grease cutter it should not leave any residue on the seat facings.
