Lynn, thank you for getting this video out there. The more we have correct information out there, the better. Now that we have enough staff we may be creating informational videos of our own in the near future. I have expanded upon your info below: 19" DIAMETER or greater of ANY species = Protected (Note: Invasive species - Ligustrum, Chinese Tallow, China Berry - can technically be protected, but if you propose their removal the city will approve it). 24" DIAMETER or greater of a Native Species = Heritage. Lynn is spot-on with the multi-stem calculation (largest diameter plus half of ALL the smaller diameters). Refer to Appendix F of the Environmental Criteria Manual for a list and description/status of trees in Austin. NO IMPACT allowed in 1/4 CRZ; No cut/fill greater than 4" in 1/2 CRZ (strategically located and air spaded piers, as well as cantilevered/suspended foundations are allowed in this zone); Preserve 50% of the Full CRZ (this includes ALL existing impervious cover...neighboring structures, roads, etc...). Post Oaks are the Old Growth of the City of Austin and have more stringent requirements than what is listed above (i.e. 75% preservation of the Full CRZ, etc...), because they are highly sensitive to disturbances and impacts. Thomas Sievers, MA - Environmental Review Specialist Community Tree Preservation Division thomas.sievers@austintexas.gov cityarborist@austintexas.gov I WILL NOT RESPOND TO MESSAGES OR COMMENTS ON KZitem IN AN OFFICIAL CAPACITY. PLEASE EMAIL ME OR THE CITY ARBORIST ACCOUNT FOR INQUIRIES.

Is there any possible way to obtain a waiver to build a driveway inside the critical root zone? Or any alternatives?

The rule is really about impact/cutting the roots. In the past they have allowed a driveway to go OVER the root zone, meaning it kind of sets on top. I've done this with a gravel drive only. Best solution is to go to the city arborist's office and talk to one of them.

All species over 19" DBH are protected. Only preferred species become Heritage Trees.
