The scariest thing about this wreck is that his HANS device broke on impact, causing his head to smash into the steering wheel. This crash actually could've been fatal.

Steering wheel saved his life. Basilar skull fracture comes from their heads going to the right front part of the cockpit. Hard to do that now with the headrest they use. The steering wheel stops the forward movement, thus preventing the skull fracture

Watching him get out of the race car was the best sight I've ever seen, especially with the hit he took. That exact type of impact (45 degree angle into the corner of the wall) at full speed has killed many drivers over the years. 15 years ago and I think this would have been a fatal impact. Do you ever see some of these drivers sometimes when avoiding the crash that make me wonder how they are a driver in NASCAR Series @ all let alone in the top 3 Series? Do You ever see that too? Some of these guys drove right @ the wreck and when already slowed. That dude @ the end was following the wrecked truck down the track and barely moved up to avoid. To bad they didn’t give us a peak through his view. He was too far back from the crash to have his window affected by that but who knows what else it could have been. He was following the truck up and down as it went down the track and when it was obvious that truck was not coming back up the track by any means. Weird.

That's apples and oranges. This was not the same kind of wreck at all. Geoff's was waaaaay worse, but through safety advances he made and a good bit of luck, he made it. Austin just hit the wall head-on, which is still a nasty impact, as well likely fatal 20 years ago, but not near the level of that wreck.
