Remember this: Djokivic and Nadal enjoyed a very long period when they had no worthy young challengers until Alcaraz showed up, whereas Federer had the two of them always on his heel. If Federer, Nadal, Djokivic had been around the same age, I think Nadal would be the only one who had a shot at reaching 20 Slams, just because he's so dominant at Roland Garros.
@gyozop

@@tomsd8656 Nah. Fed was there when the big generation left (Agassi being the last one), then for some years nobody could challenge him, only Nadal on clay. Later Nadal became all surface, then Djoko transformed into the terminator we know now. Nadal did not leave, he became Alcaraz.
@tomsd8656
Жыл бұрын
@gyozop Nadal was always there to deny Federer of the FO. It took Nadal 4 years to dethrone Federer when he won Wimbledon 2008. Federer was only 28. What younger player capable of doing the same to Nadal and Djokovic when they were in their late 20's? Answer = 0. Nadal was not the Alcaraz to Djokovic, because Nadal and Djokivic were contemporary. They knew each other's game. But in tennis, once a younger player arrived, he took over. It's how Sampras and Federer did it. Then Nadal and Djokivic put Federer to number 3. After Djokovic fully arrived in 2011, Federer won only 1 more Slam. The ones he won in 2017 and 2018 happened during Djokovic's injury. That's what should happen when you have a worthy younger adversary. For Djokovic? He won 23 Slams since he first took over in 2011. It's because there's no younger worthy opponent. By 2011 onward, Nadal was no longer a challenge to Djokovic on non clay surfaces. Djokovic had won the mental battle. For Djokovic to lose that mental edge, it would require someone like Alcaraz, but not the Alcaraz of the present. Alcaraz would need a few more years to win the mental battle. But by then Djokovic would be done with his career. If Alcaraz appeared when Djokovic was 28, 29, I don't believe Djokovic would win 24 Slams.
@gyozop
Жыл бұрын
@@tomsd8656 Maybe you are right with Alcaraz late arrival. Still we don't know if he has the consistency of the big3. But my point stands. Between 2002, the last hurray of Sampras, and 2008 Nadal Wimbledon Fed did not face dominant challenge only once a year at the FO. 6 years in a row. Nadal and Djoko never had that, they always had big3 company or Alcaraz.

Yeah that's why he almost lost to him in 2019 Wimbledon finals. Not discarding that tremendous achievement, by the way, given the rude crowd and saving 2 match points and winning the match, it's massive. Djoker is one of the greatest of all time. But you cannot say he ended Roger's career, or that Roger could not beat Djoker. The h2h is pretty balanced. Roger had plenty of success after that too, well into his late thirties and even Novak respects Roger more than any Novak fan.

@@rrtunes612 The issue isn’t just one match. Roger has lost three times in GS matches to Novak when he has held two match points. Think about that for one second. If Roger wins those three matches, the whole GOAT debate is basically settled. But he didn’t and Novak did. Thus, looking back, I agree with the original OP . Roger’s career effectively ended right around the time of this match. Novak (and Rafa) went on to dominate the decade from basically every angle. I also agree that the H2H is balanced but when it comes to GS matches, it definitely isn’t. I believe Roger has won 10 of 31 matches against Novak/Rafa in Grand Slams. Any way you slice it, that’s not GOAT material.

@@jayp123 When it comes to the Big Three, I think the age difference between them (as well as others not in their grouping) is less important. We’re talking about literally the three greatest players playing at the very same time. Rafa beat Prime Federer (according to what I think you are saying) and Fed has won a GS in his late 30s so these guys are just abnormal. I think Djokovic has proven to be better than Federer overall (in terms of H2H) and certainly did beat him when they were both younger. It’s funny because in some respects, you have to be older/wiser/mature to be able to beat someone like Federer and it took Djokovic a few years to sort that out. But there’s no doubt that Federer was more arrogant towards Djokovic (rightly or wrongly) early in their match ups but he has completely stopped that and now gives Djokovic the respect that he deserves. On the other hand, Djokovic has always respected Federer from day one and I don’t think he had much choice there. All that said, Federer not winning many more GS in the 2010 - 2020 timeframe (when he really should have) will ultimately relegate him to #3 in the ranking of the Big Three but there’s no shame in that.

I don't get it why there is so much negativity here. Tennis is a sport not a war. We talk about sportsmanship all the time - I think that should apply not only to the tennis players but also to the fans. Roger Federer is a great champion for many obvious reasons but one thing makes him a standout - he is the only one from the current top players who has been able to avoid any significant injury during his long career. No knee, wrist, back, shoulder... surgeries. THAT'S AMAZING!!!

tennis when someone who is not as well known in the world brings their A game with a mind set of one that just wants to get a few games of a superstar and that then they will be happy if that. Going into a match against an unknown player you must be ready for anything and the main thing have fun and enjoy. and forget about rankings when on a court and play the match and not worry about rankings until after in the club house. :)

No. Federer was on the same level shown by his win over Djokovic at the French and that at the age of 30. Federer 2006 was at the same level too. Also injuries are no excuse in most cases. Federer for instance has been able to prevent injuries throughout his entire carrer.

@VengeanceAfter I think that toughest GS for Novak to win will be RG... I think that main reasons isnt because Rafa or Roger are better on clay,i really dont think so,i think that like last year it will be a HUGE media pressure on Djokovic,cause of the Grand Slam chances,becoming the first man since Laver... Like i said ,like last year in SF a great pressure will be on Djokovic,but then again Djokovic is a unbelivable human,and since last RG he changed a lot.

Roger is a superior athlete and a true gentleman. Most players can only DREAM of winning ONE Grand Slam. He has 16, and has the skills, health, and self-confidence to win more. The media looks too much for the negative - wants to create the impression that Federer is done, too old, can't cut it anymore, etc. Of course Roger hates(!) to lose, but he accepts the responsibility when it happens and does so graciously. Anyone who plays him always plays their best. Try facing that every day. Go Roger!
