paulparoma the protruding vertical bar grille with ornament atop looks almost identical to, say, a 94 Town Car. Heck, the ornament looks like the top half of a Lincoln ornament. Now, the lines in the hood/bonnet trailing from the grille diverge, instead of running almost parallel, as they do on the Town Car, and the top of the bumper is flat, instead of having a notch to allow the grille to be taller, and the lights aren't quite as wide, not having the extra front turn signal module between the headlights and the grille. But... Chrome belt? ✅ Wood trim in the interior? ✅ Cushy seats? ✅ "Wire" wheels? ✅ It's safe to say that there are some similarities.

The clock resetting to 1972 is most likely an integer underflow due to the unix epoch. Pretty much the 4 bits running the clock was probably written in 1972 and was expected to be obsolete by 2000. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was a hold over from RCA’s early digital clock radios circa 1972-74.

Put an LPG conversion on it years ago so it runs duel fuel & is reasonably economical on the LPG. Even with the LPG in the boot still plenty of room in there. Done 260,000 original kms. Had the auto rebuilt about 4 years ago & a complete respray as the metallic burgundy was getting a bit faded on the boot roof etc. The car come up a treat & still looks great. She just gets treated as the odd weekend cruiser & is very comfortable to drive on the Hwy. At this stage too attached to it ever part with it for sentimental reasons. @@skeetermcswagger0U812 At one point, maybe 1998, Motor Trend in the US had a small article on the 4.0 Falcon, suggesting to Ford (implied) to bring it here. Later car magazines (Motor Trend or Road and Track) have had articles on cars we can't get in the US but should. Again, the Falcon was mentioned, but in the reason why Ford would not bring it here, it stated that Ford claimed they could not get the chassis US federalized. I would have loved the option of a Falcon instead of a Taurus. The Lincoln LS was similar in concept, but that was based on a contemporay Jaguar, and Ford never dropped in a proper Ford engine. I had imagined Ford making that into an American Falcon, and thinking back, that car was at a time when automakers were doing downsizing of sorts, so Ford should have dropped in the contemporary Mustang V8 of that time and called it a Town Car, with a higher powered Cobra engine option.

Great review. I really like your style of reviewing and wonderful car. These big Aussie cars are so well suited to driving long distances in Australia just as you point out. When I first came to Australia I was going to buy a little 4 cylinder car the same as I would own in Europe but they were surprisingly expensive second hand. I eventually found a 1998 4L EL Falcon - one of the last ones made - in great condition quite cheap. It is my favourite car of all the cars I have owned. It ate up the miles and was superbly comfortable. Nothing ever went wrong with it. Powerful, comfortable and cheap to maintain. Fuel consumption is fine out on the open road, not so OK round town. These cars can also withstand thousands of kilometers of outback dirt roads too. Their achilles heal is that they rust in WA because of the salt sea air and acidic and salty clay in the Goldfields.

A mate of mine had an LTD Cartier, he loved that thing but it was a pig. His dad used to get new falcon wagons every year or so for work and we would drive them from Adelaide to Melbourne to watch footy. My favourite was his tickford ed with 5 speed manual. Geez that think went well. One thing I understood after all those road trips is that the big fords were brilliant for log distance driving. Very comfortable. Great video 👍

My uncle had one of these, he was a Ford man all his life, we were very much a Holden family but this was probably the best looking car inside and outside at the time. He had no end of electrical problems with the car, always getting some warning light fixed which was something you didnt need to worry about on previous models. He only owned the car for a couple of years and went back to the simpler Fairmont after that. If not for the dodgy electrical system the car may have been something special, the ride and comfort levels were pretty good for that era, only the really super expensive cars like Merc and Jag had the leather interiors, Ford was kind of cheap and plasticky but super comfortable just the same.

As an American it’s WEIRD to see this car! It’s like peeking into a strange parallel universe where everything is eerily similar but nothing is familiar. The front vaguely looks like our Lincolns, and the C pillar looks like our Mercury Sables from that era. I’m surprised Australia built this car instead of Crown Victorias. Not a single switch, gauge, or handle or looks familiar, yet it still all seems to come from a similar design philosophy.

Volume Ford in Australia from 1960 to 2016 was the Falcon so largely tooled up in Australia. Each new model would depart more from US Falcon. The Fairlane was a clever move by Ford to add a long wheelbase, grille, four headlight, up market interior etc to cheaply make an up market car that was visually different than the Falcon while using mainly Falcon components. Long wheelbase floorpan from the Falcon Station wagon for example as a cost effective approach. So many Falcon parts, but few would see the Falcon heritage. So clever and cost effective as is valued in Australia doing more with less. Good for any company. Worked so well that Fairlane owners would argue with you if you said it was the same width as a Falcon and based on a Falcon. Sold well for quite a while unusually ahead of GM Holden alternatives. A first for Ford in Australia. If Ford went the Crown Vic route, as you suggest, nothing much could be used as shared from the Falcon, so this would have had much more tooling costs or import costs. Australia needing a right hand drive car would also mean the Crown Vic would need all sorts of expensive re work to make it in right hand drive as Ford US would not be concerned having clearance for a right hand drive steering column etc in the increasingly crowded US engine bays. I doubt anyone in Australia likes Crown Vics enough to import one, so would not have had the appeal of a local Fairlane. The disaml failure of the circa 1991 or so Taurus to replace the Falcon in Australia burnt Ford badly. Mustangs and similar car imported privately yes but not the increasingly stodgy Crown Vic with its Police Dept and retiree focus.

So this is the Australian Crown Victoria! I like that it has a console shifter instead of the column shifter like most Crown Vics, Mauraders, and Town Cars in Canada and the US. Also, I'd say that the rear seats in the Fairlane are much more comfortable than those of the 1990s Crown Vic, which usually not include full headrests.
@twoeightythreez
5 жыл бұрын
I like my column shifter in my Grand Marquis. IMO the floor shifter should only be there if its a proper transmission with 3 pedals. Why have a shifter sitting there in the way if you only use it twice in any average drive? The crown vic/ grand marquis is also very well suited to windy two lane roads and pulls about 25mpg (9.5 l/100km) . Its no sports car but it was never intended to be one. The "floaty American boat" stereotype is mostly a holdover from the late 70s and early 80s...but they handled way better than people assume....particularly if they were ordered with a heavy duty suspension. Body roll does not mean car cannot hold a corner, anyway. As far as the rear seats, i agree...the wheelbase is not long on a panther car when considering its 18 foot length. But, you could almost stow a falcon in the trunk.

James Raymond, I'd bet if that had the RWD NA-4.6L that was the norm for US in the '90s it'd had quite better fuel economy numbers than the F-150 Windsor 302. It was the RWD version of that '90s stretched Taurus Lincoln Continental mentioned (Conti had a DOHC-NA version of the 4.6L). But somehow we would've want the Barra 4.0L I6 instead of the Cologne 4.0L V6 available in Explorer SUVs throughout the '90s...

@@syxepop its based off the town car. in 94 it got the first of the unimpressive 4.6l engines. the lincoln was 28ft long, longest car into the 2000's. the crown vic had more success. they had lots of fleet vehicles, taxi, government and police used them. i had a 99 town car, upgraded the heads and intake with the top end out of a continental, and i went from 180hp to 360hp. fuel economy went up when on the interstate. i would get 28, but in town, it was bad. it also had a problem with barking the tires every time i would over gas it a little. i sold it to a guy who has it set up to race down in florida lol.

Dustin Shadle, OK... Think you're "a little confused here". This NC coded 4G Australian Ford Fairlane and its' related DC Australian Ford LTD HAVE NO RELATION with the US Panther platform. These were the larger versions of the era's Australian Ford Falcon. All of those cars have been separated from their US cousins since the mid '60s ('67 for Fairlane) and were developed exclusively by Ford Australia for their use and maybe of some other RHD countries. The '94 US Mercury Grand Marquis had pretty much the same grille as this Fairlane, but I understand were SLIGHTLY LARGER than the Australian Fairlane or LTD. This copy of the '94 Australian Fairlane didn't had the RWD-based 190-210hp SOHC 4.6L (the Lincoln Continental used at one time a more powerful FWD-based 4v DOHC version of the powerplant) of US Panther models, but the 302 / 4.95L from the era's US-spec Ford F-150 pickup, engine made in Canada. Now that I see the US Panther specs ('94 US-spec Grand Marquis were 5.395m long, 1.976m wide, 1.443m high on a 2.906m wheelbase), wonder how exactly they measure against these large non-related Australian full-sizers... Maybe someone from the AU / NZ audience can clarify.

Having the calendar stop at 1999 I agree is stupid for a car released relatively close to that date, but the loop around to 1972 is understandable given that perpetual calendars have a repeat cycle of 28 years (except when you reach a multiple of 100 years but not 400 years like 2100). The 1972 calendar is the same as the 2000 calendar (a leap year with Jan 1 on a Saturday). 1973 is the same as 2001 and this tracks correctly until 2100. To get that calendar to show the correct day of the week until 2100 just set the year to 1991 (for this year 2019, ie. subtract 28 years).

Note that the rear door size and shape is a legacy of the fact that the Falcon station wagon used same platform as the Fairlane and LTD. If you look at an Australian Falcon station wagon of the same era you will see the passenger cell and the 4 doors are identical. The LTD and Fairlane are the same chassis and just have different front guards and bonnet and body changes from c pillar rearwards. They also have the same wheelbase unlike the Falcon sedans.
