Hi Adam! This is Alex the (actual) train supervisor here. Thank you for your thorough and well researched video. The Tilt Train and I have done many hundreds of thousands of kilometres together, and I take great pride in the fact that myself and the onboard staff have safely taken millions of people where they need to get to around Queensland. We’d gladly welcome yourself or any other traveller onto the old girl anytime you visit QLD next. It was a pleasure to have you (even if I had no idea you were filming 😉)

Nice video, very positive. The food is a letdown. When it first launched in '98, business class included an alcoholic drink, a light snack, dinner was a real roast from the galley. etc., The whole thing was a bit of a political debacle, only matched by the diesel tilt train for sheer pointlessness. If you're in a hurry, you fly. If you need to stop in little places on the way, you get the bus. QR should have just ordered a new fleet of 'lander cars in the late 90s which would have lasted until at least 2050, and kept the ICE trains in motion. At least people knew what to expect with them.

When I went on the electric Tilt Train in the late 90’s and early 00’s it seemed as though we routinely broke 180 and once I caught over 190 on the best sections of track. Since the accident that sent the diesel Tilt Train flying off the rails at 112 on a 60 bend, everything was limited to 100 for far too long (I’m not sure how 100 could have helped in that scenario?) and then eventually the fastest sections were lifted to 160 and the 160 limit seems very strict these days.

Victoria's Vlocity trains travel at 160 km/hr for quite long sections of their lines to Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo and Tragalgon. The distances are not long enough to provide a meal service, but do give an impression of speed. The Bendigo line was originally built to British mainline standards in the 1860's so it had very gentle curves, which was easy to upgrade to 160 km/hr with new track.

Then it was privatised and now if I understand it the Tasmanian government is having to buy back what is left. To all those people whingeing about the "slow" speeds and that Australia should have bullet trains, OZ doesnt have a large enough population to justify the extra expense of building and running them. The bullet trains carry 100's of passengers per trip to make it economically feasible. The only times OZ has 100's of passengers per trip is during peak hours on the suburban lines.

Great video, thanks. I had a look at next nice view business class seat for single and 6 weeks ahead of time looks great. Clearly these seats book up well in advance. Are you sure about selecting your own seat? Even at 6 months in advance I can only accept the seat they elect for me.

Thank you! When I booked, you weren't able to select your own seat. But when I checked the fares online (as shown in the video) the page where you can choose a seat came up so I assumed you could.

I'm travelling on the tilt train in Business class very soon and my seats are booked directly opposite where you were sitting. I normally drive from the Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton but with the cost of petrol going up it's cheaper to take the train for our short stay in Rocky so I'm really looking forward to my first ride on the tilt train.

I've been doing a lot of armchair travelling these past couple of years-especially train journeys. I really enjoyed this journey but I have one question - what exactly is a 'Lamington'?
@astridvallati4762
2 жыл бұрын
A"Lamington" is a cube of Sponge Cake, dipped in chocolate, then rolled in shredded coconut. Originated in the kitchen of the then Governor of Qld, Lord Lamington. The chef, at a loss for "cocktail nibblies" took old sponge cake, dipped in chocolate, and sprinkled with coconut... Instant delight. Still considered the State Sweet/ Bakery product.

Hello Adam. Very much enjoyed this ride. I have a love of trains. My earliest memory at around 4 years of age travelling from Raleigh to Casino to holiday with my grandmother. At 16 years of age I worked in the Ticket office at Moree and Gunedah. 9 half years. My last 9 half years I done security with Queensland Rail on the Suburban network. I feel I will have to do the run to Rockhampton. Realy good video. Almost felt I was there with you. Thank you very much for great coverage. Take care, and keep on riding the Old Rattler.

Guess they have not had a complimentary newspaper in business class for a while - was not available when I travelled to Bundaberg May 2021. Unfortunately for my trip to Bundaberg they had a track failure so we were loaded like cattle onto "coaches" for the ~6 hours by road. So missed out on the "business" class seating heading north, lucky no faults were on the day of my return to Brisbane, so finally got my tilt train ride home.

Business class is decent, still pretty poor service but it's cheap and serves a purpose mainly people on concession and pensioners, not a great way to travel, very slow and usually the class of people ruin it for others, swearing, cleanliness and rudeness of a lot of passengers some heavily medicated and drunk people just being pains, if you can afford to travel by air it's much better, if Queensland rail had a faster service or a better class on the train like first or a fully recliner chair in business id pay high dollars for the experience until then they can keep the Centrelink train.

Vlines Vlocity is a diesel that does 160kph. I think that is Australia’s fastest train.
@FromtheWindowSeat
2 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few Australian trains with a top service speed of 160km/h - as you say, the Vlocity, as well as The Prospector in WA, the electric tilt train (Qld), the diesel tilt train / Spirit of Queensland and the XPT. However, the electric tilt train holds the Australian train speed record (210km/h) ... although of course it never reaches that speed in service.
@chrismack3759

So slow, i was in France doing 290kph and next minute it was doing 360kph . And that was 2013 where they had light rail for about 10 years and in Brisbane are still about 2 years off getting our first Light rail.

Its not really that impressive when you can drive to Rocky in the same time, and you can depart Brisbane at whatever time you want, and depart Rocky whatever time you want. And if you are on business you will need to hire a car anyway, seems a complete waste of time to me.
@FromtheWindowSeat
Жыл бұрын
But if you drive, you can’t really do anything else during that time. You also need to stop for breaks and food. Whereas on the train you can get up and walk around, eat something and get work done (or read a book if you prefer). 🤔
