The information in this video is out of date by a long shot. Whilst the oil pipeline is still subject of a discussion as to a preferred route, there is a motorway link between the airport site and Ampol's oil terminal at Kurnell. As for the rail link, it has been approved by the NSW Government and construction has begun. Both the rail line and the M12 Motorway will be complete by the time the airport is due to open.

Slight fact correction. Sydney Airport is not Australia's largest. Bad fact checking here..... it's actually extremely small and in fact, it's the smallest of any of the state capital airports in Australia. What this video meant to say is that it is Australia's busiest airport. The size comes down to two simple issues. Age and location. The current Sydney International Airport is actually the oldest continually operating international airport. It's second in pure age to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. This should not be a surprise given that both the Netherlands and Australia share very early trans-continental history with the Dutch national carrier KLM being the oldest airline and the Australian national carrier Qantas, being the longest continually operating airline (3rd oldest after KLM and Avianca). Australia was also the first country to have both a National Airline and Air Force. When the airport was built, it was in a rural area. But today, that rural area is only 5km from the CBD (downtown) of Sydney. To put that in perspective, if the edge of Sydney Airport was the Empire State building, the centre of Sydney would be the new World Trade Centre. Sydney needs a second airport. The biggest issue is that Sydney is hemmed in by rivers and mountains. Very early in its development, governments quickly stepped in to convert as much of the land as possible into parklands and national parks. Sydney is home to the second oldest national park in the world, and has almost 50% of the land protected which adds to what makes it such a liveable city. The urban spawl has moved around national parks but has left almost no place for a second airport. Thankfully the government is not shy in spending money. The airport will receive a train line not too long after the airport is built, and well before the airport traffic is ramped up. It won't be perfect to start with, but I expect the metro projects will soon see frequent express services. Metro projects going on in Sydney are collectively twice as large as London's Crossrail project, taking most of the engineers and designers from those projects.

@@johnnichol9412 land area is significantly smaller. But being built in 1920, it was likely built to be large at the time. Perth for example is about 5 times the size. What's exactly wrong with the metro? As of now, the metro ends at St Marys, which has a direct train link to the CBD (where most visitors would be headed). Cannot see an issue with this.
@TheGreatLordDufus
Жыл бұрын
When it is built, the metro is a 23km line to St Marys. That's not exactly close. In the first few years, no rail connection. And then is not integrated into the terminal, though quite close. Depending on take-up by airlines, a "Skybus" type operation might suffice early on (after all, Melbourne Tullamarine only has buses because Australia is not good at transport away from immediate CBD surrounds). To service much of the area this airport is supposed to serve it will have to. For Penrith and Paramatta, once at St Marys not so bad. For Liverpool or Campbelltown, its still a couple more changes and a slog with luggage (rapid bus is planned for some of that section). If the idea is to catch a lot of the traffic from western residents that otherwise have to clog roads and rail into Kingsford-Smith easy connections from those hubs are needed. 3-4 hubs collectively making up roughly a Brisbane sized catchment. Without the demand from outside the area, as you rightly say most visitors to Sydney will want to go the CBD, and Kingsford-Smith. The new airport is probably going to cater more for residents than outsiders visiting, but the lack of curfew adds some more timeslots too.

It’s a very real issue , do you realise how long it takes to get from St Marys to the city or even to Parramatta , forever. Even the alternative to take a metro from the airport to St Marys , ordinary train to Westmead and then on the new western metro to the city would take forever and require 2 changes. The metro from the airport should have been taken to say , Blacktown and join an extended western metro or to the under construction metro at Bankstown , common sense I would think.

Given the cost of the airport and all the new infrastructure proposed, it would probably have been cheaper just to buy up the property around the existing airport and do a complete redevelopment of the rabbit warren of current terminals and probably ask Qantas to kindly move their maintenance facility somewhere else that was less busy.

The pipeline just got caught in it as a by-product of that clusterduck. The airport is desperately needed, as Kingsford Smith is completely hemmed in, and the land it occupies could be much better used if it were to eventually be completed replaced by Badgery's Creek, so it's unfair to say Badgery's is a white elephant, but is absolutely has been appallingly managed.

No. The key difference is: Avalon is very far away from Melbourne, and is much closer to Geelong, which has a very small population compared to Melbourne. It is mainly used as a side airport for budget carriers like Jetstar and (previously) Air Asia. Whereas Western Sydney Airport will primarily serve Western Sydney, but has been designed to eventually replace Kingsford Smith Airport. Western Sydney has a population of over 1 million, and if it were to be its own city, would be the fourth largest in Australia. And a very high majority of the Western Sydney population are people of different nationalities, and it contains many diasporas. This has big potential for international carriers, especially the Middle Eastern, Vietnamese, and Indian carriers. In fact, WSA is in talks with up to around 60 international carriers who are interested in flying to WSA when it opens. And alongside that, there will definitely be a domestic flight market for people who would rather a conveniently local airport rather than the hassle or Kingsford Smith. So there you go. I suspect the long-term plan will be (eventually) to close Kingsford Smith. Airports within inner suburbs are a huge pollution and congestion issue, and the land it sits on is insanely valuable. Splitting international and domestics over two airports nearly 50km apart and with no direct link between them will be *hugely* unpopular with Qantas and VA, who have significant amounts of domestic/int'l transit traffic through the airport, and *very* unpopular with the public too. There's plenty of space out at Badgery's Creek to build 3 or 4 runways (two full length runways for big jets, and two shorter ones for A320/737 narrowbodies would be ideal) and terminals so once they finally sort out decent transit and ground infrastructure and get the place scaled up, it'll make sense to begin winding down Kingsford Smith. I think they'll need to be a heavy-rail line from St. Marys. This will allow a fast train services from both Parramatta and the CBD direct to the airport using the intercity (fast) tracks, and potentially also from Wollongong via the triangle at Sydnenham and the metropolitan freight line between Campsie and Lidcombe, with some upgrades puts in place.

The reason the metro terminal is “so far” from the terminal is called future-proofing. When the airport is eventually expanded, it will be mirrored, so another terminal and runway will be built on the other side. When that happens the metro station will then be snug in the middle of both terminals. If the metro station was to be under the first terminal, it would be a very long walk for people from the other terminal when it’s built…

I agree that there would be no problems with airport construction under a Labor government, because under Labour it would never get started. It was successive Labor governments that procrastinated for 30 years allowing overcrowding to grow at Mascot as they pandered to the NIMBY crowd.
