This was an excellent interview. I think that anyone who was contemplating a Cattle Dog could come away knowing whether it was the breed for them.

Good video... very informational. Registered breeds make me run the other way.... I've got an ACD from a a breeder that produces working dogs...many go to Texas....no papers.... absolute workers. Velcro dog... very different and not for most....run him a few miles and he'll look at you like now what😁

A goid read is "The Dogs That Built Australia" by Guy Hull. He cuts out all the speculation about the cattle dog and kelpie breeds. What i love is the canadian breeders description that the cattle dog is the quarter horse, of the dog world. Ive used this description all my life. Just so accurate, not just their build but the way they work livestock. Watch videos of a quarter horse working then watch a csttle dog, you will easily see the similarities. Even the riders say most of the time they are just along for the ride.

Perhaps an Australian Stock Horse rather than a Quarter Horse, the Waler is a bit big to compare to an ACD. Of course, both horse breeds come from the same roots. The endurance and toughness would have to be the same in both horse and dog.

Incredible breed. Definitely need a dedicated owner that understands the breed but you 100% can own a cattle dog in a small living space. Success with a cattle dog in a small space all depends on your dedication to meeting your dog’s needs. It adds difficulty to owning the breed but you don’t need to turn someone away because they don’t have a big enough property. If you love the dog you will do what needs to be done to care for them.

It's always worth mentioning that heelers are exceptional guard dogs. They're incredibly territorial and protective, and that makes them a "danger" to intruders". Also, they WILL bite - and bite hard.

I’m 57 Aussie now, a plumber and when I was 22 I bought a blue heeler, they love to work chase catch, so as I worked a lot under sub floor houses I would throw a tennis ball under the house I was working on and (gizmo) my female heeler would clear the way of cob webs, come back drop the ball at your feet and of she would go again, loyal smart beyond belief and accepting of strangers but a 1 person dog, my dog basically lived on the back of my ute, I would class her as an unhinged postal worker with a semi automatic watching my tools of trade, no one got near my ute while she was on it . If you don’t have the time or the room to exercise them they become destructive and even more nippy than usual, they need an outlet and there not a lap dog , they should not be an inside dog , they are an amazing breed but they need time and attention.

We taught our boy to use fluent pet buttons to “talk” and when we sit down to watch tv if we stay on the couch too long he walks over to his buttons and says “all done” 😆

Greetings. Good interview but I keep getting concerned in regards to the notion these dogs are busy busy all the time, in my case I have to disagree. I have a Red (6yo, really stocky and a 100% go get em) built like a little tank, and a Blue (4yo slightly taller and finer then the red 95% effort except when hes doing something he really likes doing, fast, very fast). I walk them or run them while I cycle up to 4 times a day but we have some days where they may only get a short walk say 1&1/2km or nothing, the Red is 99% silent, the Blue is a talker and jealous if I pay to much attention to the Red or the Red has his ball. The Red is a dog that is loving and shows real affection and loves being made a fuss of but then he heads away to his own patch for a bit of solitude, he has those accusing all ways assessing eyes, when asleep always awake (I know that sounds odd). The Blue is the Velcro dog of the two, always close no matter, gives me space when mowing the lawn, does not attack the motor mower so often these days but not more than 5mtrs away as a rule at any time, always watching, the real Velcro dog as I said earlier but does not like affection, quite odd, he has slept on my bed every night since he was three months old, had to make a little step up when he was a pup, wouldn't shut up until he got on the bed moaning and grizzling. Both have extremely good hearing and eye sight, the Red hates Magpies, he can see one in excess 300mtrs, if he doesn't, I point in the direction and just say "Look', hes gone, 100% effort, never caught one yet but he loves it, his job when we go out the back. If there is a cat (which I worry about) they are both gone, the Blue is faster but painted ears in that situation, I can call the Red off, very obedient, the Blue not quite so but hes improving, only taken 4 years. They both love my daughters and grand kids when they visit, a small problem at the start, the Blue was over protective and barked at my grand kids if they got to close, that is now not a problem, sorted by food, these two are the biggest bludgers when it comes to tucker but the best training reward. The only failing these two dogs (the breed in my case) have is tearing their dew claws, they get ripped when turning tight turns, catching their dew claws in the grass not letting that ball or frisbee get away, 100% effort, here in New Zealand it is illegal to remove them so I have had to stop throwing ball and frisbees much to their disgust but a herding ball goes a little way for fun time. Didn't mean to bore anyone who got this far, they love the bush and go forever but these two are happy to lay about when its time to lay about, it seems to me they are quite happy doing bugger all and don't have to go go go all the time like most proponents of this breed seem to say, I do agree they are not an apartment dog, wouldn't be fair on either dog or human. Love my two boys, Rex and Blu, cheers, just a little insight on my ownership of this breed.

Heelers isn't a slang name, it's what just about everyone in Aus calls them.

Believe it or not the genetics havent been finely tuned within this breed, its only 200yrs old.....thats why there is a large variety in appearance.... Mines a header and a heeler....if your in the wrong place he tell you regardless of your orientation 😂

There should be a great discrepancy in appearance If they are not breeding true ,they are not a breed Only badly bred have different appearance If there were a more than one dog,one will go to the front and one to the heel

Hope you are breeding better dogs than the thumbnail Kelpies were bred at about the same time and i would like dna proof of the dingo Bobtails, dalmation(deafness),blue merle collies and other breeds The cross breeding created the hardiness They were often used on drays to guard and to heel up the bullocks The do not caste which they would do if they had kelpie in them Wrong ,you need a good stop and lots of fill under the eyes When they work together and will head a tail Puppies should be about 7 kg at 8 weeks Desex them before sale and that will stop backyard breeders unless they are going to show
