hey mate nice video! I have some questions tho. What certification would I need to get in order to fly a Mavic mini for commercial purposes? Does the RePL only applies in Australia or can also be recognized in other countries or the world? Cheers!
@JamestheAviator
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Juan, for commercial purposes you only need to make a certain amount per year to require a RePL or RoC (possibly $70,000 like the ABN but don't quote me) so anything small should be fine without anything. I have no idea internationally, RePL is a CASA thing so I'd say it's Australia only but you really need to talk to the drone department of CASA. Also Since you have a mini you can fly near uncontrolled aerodromes (not on the approach/departure path or runway, however. My best advice is to contact CASA themselves. I hope that information help and thanks for the support!

If you have a REOC you can fly at night, FPV, BVLOS, EVLOS, a RePL allows you to make money, Accreditation allows you to fly knowing the basic rules. There is so much to CASA rules and regulations, if you have a RePL you should also have a AROC and radio, oh man it’s more complex than most think but the fines are extensive if you get caught doing the wrong thing like flying in a national park without approval etc

I have watched the Video on CASA website (good general info) as well as few similar videos like yours here on KZitem. I just wonder if being a licensed drone operator (obtained in the USA) would cover me over there in Australia as well? Thanks.

Hi Pouya, sorry for the late reply. You'd have to check with CASA on that as I do not know. I believe you may not as they have different rules and the FAA (USA equivalent of CASA) is not nearly as strict.

Hi, I have a mavic pro, the main reason I bought it was to explore hills and cliffs around my area, it’s mostly rural land. What qualifications would I need to be able to fly beyond Vlos? If I’m to be restricted to 100 or so metres I could of done that with a $50 Kmart drone.
@JamestheAviator
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Mark, To fly beyond VLOS you need to be IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) rated. I can't remember if you can get a RePL specific IFR qualification or they let you fly VLOS if you're an IFR rated pilot but needless to say an IFR rating is required. BTW, getting an IFR rating is not easy at all. In terms of restrictions, you could get an aviation radio and Aviation Radio Operator Certificate (ARoC) to go above 400ft but apart from that you're stuck down under 400ft. My first drone was $100 and it was incredibly difficult to fly so I don't think a $50 Kmart one would be any good either. Anyway, those are you're options, very limited unfortunately but you can thank CASA for that.

@@JamestheAviator thanks James, yes my experience with casa is their moto is “safe sky’s are empty sky’s” Some of their rules they’ve made up for drones make as much sense as some of the covid rules ( rules for the sake of looking as though their doing something). I’m a private fixed wing pilot, with a night vfr rating, I’ve studied my ifr rating but haven’t completed it yet, and hold a valid asic, that being said it doesn’t allow me any exemption flying a drone, I’m hardly going to fly it into a real aircraft. When I fly my drone I pose no threat at all to other aircraft, I even check the status of the airspace I’m because it’s from the surface to 8500 ft and military. Thanks again

not tryig to be rude but did you make many of your mistakes on purpose refering to definisions you stated ? eg. becoming aware of other un-maned aircraft within 5.5km of and airfileld that is controled. im sure you ment maned air craft, same with a drone and fly to 400ft 120m as maned aircraft have a min not max of 500ft 150m . sorry to nit pick. but please correct me if i am wrong, im here to learn
@JamestheAviator
Жыл бұрын
Yes, correct, becoming aware of manned aircraft. Just to clarify, drones (recreationally) max altitude is 400ft whereas a plane's minimum altitude is generally 500ft (I do not know, nor qualified for helicopter or other manned aircraft operations).

More restrictive rules in the Nanna-State. The only one that makes sense is the height and proximity to controlled airspace and aerodromes because they're a clear safety issue for aircraft. The rest are a joke and just revenue-raising. I'm so sick of this BS in Australia.

@jordanking7711
Жыл бұрын
Drones under 250g are subject to the same rules but at the moment they don’t need to be registered or require a license. The big difference though is whether you are flying for recreational or commercial purposes. If it’s the latter, extra rules apply I believe.

great video! any chance you can make one on what it means for FPV flying? Thanks
@JamestheAviator
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew, FPV generally have the same rules as per normal flight. You must fly in VLOS meaning if you were to take off the goggles you would be able to see the drone. Unfortunately, FPV is a very new sector in the drone rules with CASA so I suggest that you regularly check in with CASA about this. All the other rules also apply for FPV flying. There is a debate from CASA on if FPV flying should be made illegal however for now it's allowed provided the VLOS rules are obeyed. I won't be making a video on FPV rules as I don't have one myself as so I don't know enough information for a video but if this video gets seen I may make a video on certificate holder rules in which I would probably include FPV as well. I hope that answered your question, thanks for commenting!

@JamestheAviator

Hey Dominic, I did all my studies online with a company. If you're already an aircraft pilot then you don't really need to study (I just needed to learn about batteries) but you don't have that experience then I suggest getting a book on RePL. I'm doing my studies for my Recreational/Private Pilots License and I've noted a few RePL books from Bob Tait (a leading flight instructor) or Aviation Theory Centre for around $80 - 100. Apart from that, you have companies like the way I went through but just for study, I think the manuals/books are a lot cheaper.

What type of drone do you operate? I registered my drone when I got my license and there was no fee involved. Do you operate a drone over the 500g (I believe) weight exception? I can speculate that bigger drones mean more commercialisation meaning "taxes" but that's only speculation which I don't support.

Hello, thanks for the support. CASA's rules specify that in order for the road to be considered a populous place their it must be a busy/main road or a large gathering of people. The road that I was recording was not a main road but a rural bypass and was recorded during the middle of the day. If it was during peak hour or a high volume of traffic then I certainly wouldn't have flown it. I was also very mindful of a potential failure and knew that I could fly the drone away from the road if it fell out of the sky due to the drones backup systems. Anway I appreciate the concern and thank you again for the support.
