Documentary 'Footprints' was made in support of Australian South Sea Islanders in sharing the contemporary and historical truth about our community demographic. 2018 was of great significance for the ASSI community, which saw Inner West Council (IWC) Mayor Darcy Byrne move a motion that received bipartisan council support to raising the Australian South Sea Islander flag at Petersham Town Hall-Sydney NSW annually on our official recognition day which falls on August 25th. Furthermore 2019 will see the distribution of Australian South Sea Islander educational resources throughout the IWC libraries and a Mural to be painted in recognition of the Blackbirding trade and their descendant’s connection to Sydney Inner West region and beyond. We hope this documentary will go along way as part of an educational resource that will share a truth that exists as part of the great Australian story. ASSI have been here for some 172 years and still struggle for inclusion in meaningful programs and services as part of a national action plan. Working together can only achieve the dreams and aspirations for our communities. Much gratitude to producer Warwick Moss for the Bill Cruise online TV, Firts Nations and ASSI community organisations and leaders.
