Austrian president Thomas Klestil has addressed the nation hours after swearing in the new government which is made up of members of Joerg Haider's extreme right Freedom Party.
In a nationwide television address, Klestil expressed his personal «concern and dismay» over the negative foreign reaction and domestic turmoil.
He urged all «to give the new federal government a chance and to judge it by its
work.»
Klestil also appealed to the new government to work «in the spirit of European values» and promised to be on guard against «any development which goes against the values of the European Union and the international community.»
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"I will send this declaration with a personal letter to all heads of state in the E-U as well as the presidents of the U-S and Israel. Yesterday I made it very clear to Dr Schuessel and Dr Haider that none respect of this declaration and the E-U rules would have heavy consequences. Austria is a stable democracy, a functioning state of justice which over the last decades has built a good reputation within the international community. Now it's important to keep up this reputation, that's why I ask all the political forces of this country as well as all Austrians as well as all our partners in the E-U and the world to give this government a chance and to only judge it by its work."
