Honestly your review was one of the main reasons i bought myself these headphones. Couldn't be happier with my decision... ^^ Since I'm listening to my favourite music with the Hi-X55 i noticed so many little details in many songs that i were never able to hear with any of my previous headphones. Also love the build quality, comfort and sound stage. Worth every penny.

I’ve just had mine delivered, and in short, they superb for me and my preferences, they are beautifully built and executed and it’s noticeable when you handle and wear them, the sound stage is brilliant and this and the eq profile mimics my Yamaha HS7’s profile really well, which is exactly what I need. The fit is really good but interestingly something you need to fiddle with for a while, because up and down on your ears really changes the overall sound profile, someone else mentioned this in a previous post and they are correct, I was really surprised by this and can’t fathom why it is, but I like it; as it shows how minimal changes can make a big difference when small speakers are strapped to your head 😊 who knew? My working pair before these were AKG K271 Mk2’s and they have a good sound but not as clear, not as separated and certainly not as comfortable even though they have done a good job for me up until now, I see what I have been missing. Price is the issue for most, but my guess is it will go hand in hand with other gear, growing as a musician and investment in your preferred production tools. 👍 when the times is right, it will be right. 👍

I have them on order - this makes me nervous as I wear glasses, which may break the seal. I like to prioritize comfort when I adjust headphones so I guess I’ll have to settle for whatever sound signature is in the most comfortable position. Once adjusted, to they slide around?

I saw these a while ago and was very intrigued, sadly no one really gave it a shot until now! Good job NTR!! P.s. This is an exert for the downloadable spec sheet regarding the driver design: Developed from scratch, the all new 44mm Hi-X driver features a ring magnet system - a home-grown technology which has been incorporated into various award-winning headphones in the past by our engineers. It allows improved air-flow and the strongest magnetic field in its class. This ring magnet structure coupled with a copper-clad aluminum voice coil reduces the weight of the membrane and voice coil that sits on it allowing it to move or change direction faster providing a better impulse reaction, highly desired for contemporary as well as traditional music production. A double acoustic wall was designed to achieve the best damping results, to support this and increased comfort, the form factor of the earpads has been rethought completely, giving more room for the ears without enlarging the earcups, reducing fatigue from long listening sessions.

Just today I noticed a $300 charge on my credit card... When had I placed it? Today? Yesterday? A day that had not yet woven itself into the tapestry of time? Also, what would you recommend I get to drive these? I only have a focusrite solo usb interface at the moment, would that be enough?

Got my pair and made a review, here is what I think: Build After I got my hands on the headphones I was able to quickly see that they indeed had excellent build quality. The foam ear cups and memory foam along the top band were plush and formed well to my head. The grip is not vice-like, and is a balanced mix between comfort and firmness to provide a good seal around my ears. The top band foam pad is connected with velcro, and looks to be easily swappable. The included cable is well constructed, long, and made from a thick, quality plastic. The packaging is minimalistic, which was an encouraging sign that no expense was spared for these headphones. The frame is a good mix of aluminum and plastic, and I have no complaints in the materials department. The grip is firm enough on my ears to the point that I could not forget that I was wearing headphones, though light enough that I was able to keep the headphones on my head for about six hours without any fatigue. Sound isolation is good, and ambient noise is not as noticeable when wearing the Hi-x55. There is a light layer of padding on the inside of each ear cup separating the drivers from the ear. It feels about 1.5 mm thick, doing an excellent job of stopping any exposed bumps from rubbing against the portions of my ear that rest against the inside of the cup. The mechanism for adjusting the fit of the headphones is the best that I have ever used. It solidly clicks with a mechanical, metal locking sound each time I pull it out to adjust the height of each ear. After being adjusted, it firmly stays in place and I do not find myself needing to readjust it without deliberate action. The earcups rotate in only one direction 180 degrees to lay flat on a surface, the earcups will also fold inwards to make the headphones easier to store. Sound Quality The two other headphones that I have owned are the Sony MX3 headphones and the Sennheiser HD 598 open back headphones. The MX3 were my last pair, which I used for commuting. I would consider them a downgrade to the HD 598’s, the MX3’s sound appearing muted and muddied when compared. I can say solidly that the Austrian Audio Hi-x55’s are an upgrade over the Sony MX3 for general listening, but after I played several songs, it became immediately apparent to me that there is something lacking in the timbre and richness of the sound in comparison to my old HD 598’s. This could be because they are closed back headphones, and it isn’t a just comparison to make. The audio I hear appears overly analytical, almost dry, if I can use that as a descriptor. It’s distanced, not intimate, which for me detracts from my ability to get fully immersed in the music. I can hear every instrument and detail well, with complex sounds the headphones excel, and there is a crispness to the audio that I have never experienced before. Bass sounds like it packs a punch and is detailed, but is distanced, so you can hear it, but not experience it physically; it’s a similar experience to the HD 598, which had much fainter bass than the Hi-x55. Regardless, this is not a headphone for bass heads. The separated, dry tonality of the sound does work superbly for electronic music. Contemporary classical music lacks life with these headphones, but drums sound tight and better than any other headphone that I have tried. Bass in a similar frequency range also sounds delectable. Classic rock sounds off, and is lacking life due to the separation. Movie soundtracks with lots of unique sounds, ambiance, and bass like the annihilation soundtrack works very well with the Hi-x55. Stereo effects moving between one ear to the other sound fantastic. Vocals sound clear and concise, they can be heard audibly and are not overwhelmed by other instruments or bass. The sound signature sounds (tight? Distanced? Withdrawn? Recessed?) to too high a degree, and music continues to not sound quite true to life. You can hear intakes of breath from the vocalists. I can hear individual rustle of chimes, something that I haven’t been able to do with other headphones. I can also hear the brush of fingers against the individual nylon strings of a guitar, the twang of a cello as it is plucked, or the individual drops of rain as they hit a surface, splattering across a leaf. The sound is detailed to the point where I can tell what kind of surface the rain drop is hitting. Conclusion I can see the Hi-x55 being an great monitoring headphone for its price range. For the average audiophile listener, the excellent monitoring capabilities are not worth the sacrifice of the dynamic, rich sound that the listener may be used to. If you are a producer for electronic mixes and other detailed computer generated audio productions, these could be an excellent tool for distinguishing individual sounds. For the average listener, this pair of headphones is not worth the additional price tag vs a cheaper pair of Sennheiser headphones as an example. The sound quality of my 598’s were comparable and can be picked up for less than $80 used as of 2020. Less detailed, but more immersive. Will I be keeping the Hi-x55? Probably not, while the quality is excellent, there is something lacking in the music that I can’t quite shake. I will probably exchange these for a different pair with a sound signature closer to the Sennheiser headphones.

Well...I can't say it's "the best" since that's a loaded word. All I can say is that the x55 provides more detail, better separation, wider soundstage, and more comfort than the NDH20, DT880, Ollo S4r, Rane RH50, LCD-1, HD6xx/660s, and other similarly-situated headphones I've heard. Whether the x55 is "the best" will be an individual assessment. It's a good headphone in a reasonable price bracket. I think the plastic bits take something away from the overall experience, and I probably would feel more comfortable if the price was around $250.

@@NoThemeReviews THX for this Great Rewiew!!! I got my Pair since 2 months and Love them more then every other Can and I have a lot. But why you write now that the Price was around 250 you would be feeling more comfortable? Did I got something wrong from your Review ? Because I have heard out something like they perform way over the Price Point. And the Build is Superior, you said. The comfort too and for a closed Back the Soundstage is very good too. And they are made in Vienna where I come from. So in this matter they are comparebable which Grado,s (those are made in Brooklyn). Austria is an Industrial Country and Worker,s get Relatively well paid. But Sellers do not. So my Conclusion: Superior Build Quality, More than just O.K Materials, Design is very Compact and foldable and looks Great (at least too me), Comfort is exceptional ( Some days I listen to them from the Beginning of the Day until I fall with them in Sleep), The Best and biggest Soundstage in an closed Back that i have ever heard. I wish they had just a little more Bass but I prefer that little less than a little too much ( and off course EQ ing helps, so Sometimes I raise 32Hz +2db and Maybee 64Hz 1 or max 2 db, but mostly I keep them flat). Overall Sound Signature is very good for me, just the Highs are sometimes just a tiny bit too much for my Taste, but I think that,s because they are just Deliver what,s the Recording ( and your Source etc...) has to offer. Separation and Imaging are also on a High Level and the most Important thing for me Soundwise is that every thing that you and me and everybody who Listen and make Comments to an Headphone, Separates each Aspect (Bass, Highs,Soundstage, Imaging, etc...) but in Reality you can,t Seperate one thing from the other. Off course we have to do that to explain the aspect,s in Detail but at the End it,s just one Product standing against other Products and the Summary of the Product makes it the Product itself and in this way of Thinking this Product ( as I Tried to explained) Is ( in My Opinion worth easy 500+ ) P.S. Please excuse my horrable English! As I wrote i am from Austria and we speak German as you know, so I am not an Native English Speaker and I am Relatively Old, which means that I learned English not in School but only by "doing" in My Holidays, Listen to Music and watch Movies in English and so on. THX again! I am looking forward for your Comparison Videos and Maybee for an Answer. (That would be Great). Greetings from the Hometown of Austrian Audio. I have no Relation to them, but i am proud that People from my Hometown are able to Produce Products like this. Yes, I am very Patriotic! But that did not Influence my Hearing and Overall Opinion about this Fantastic Can. And by the way: I also bought them as a B-Stock Version, which means an short used Product from a Customer with a Discount, but not a huge one.

@@ludwigflatscher2057 Hello! Your English is very good--better than a lot of native English speakers, in fact. The reason I commented I'd feel more comfortable with a price around $250 is because of annoying issues: a cable that's far too long for portable use, and which requires one to hunt for a replacement; the proprietary earpads, which will require purchasing replacements directly from Austrian Audio; and the use of some plastic in the build. It's really hard for a new headphone brand to get traction. Undercutting competitors is a big step in the right direction. $250 would be a stunningly great price for this headphone, and likely be the impetus to more people to try Austrian Audio. But, that's just my opinion. I'm not offended the headphone costs $300. It's simply that I believe a slightly lower price would only benefit the brand and customers.

@@NoThemeReviews THX for your quick Answer! I totally agree with the Issues that you have mentioned and especially the Cable and more so the really stupid proprietary Earpads, just held me back a long time from order them! But with the opportunity to get them which 30 Days Return Policy and as an Custumer Return for 257€, (the Regular Price is 299€ which is even 16% more then 299$), i thought let me give them a Try. And luckily I found an Portable Cable in my Collection that fits, even with the locking System and an perfect very compact Hardcase as well. So noextra Because they need this 2 things. So no extra cost s for that. So maybee you agree that Soundwise they play in an 450+ Region. Greetings from Vienna! P.S: I like to mention that (for example) the German Brand Beyerdynamic is (I guess everywhere in the World, except in some EU States), more expensive! Let me have an look on the DT 1990: 400€ in Poland, 420€ in Germany on Amazon, 435€ in Austria on Amazon, 549$ in the States on Amazon! 3 months ago the Price in Germany whas even lower: 389€ on Amazon. I don’t have the 560 and probably won’t get them any time soon. The x55 sounds vastly different from the Sundara. Both have a bass roll off but the x55’s sub-bass is leaner. Mids sound more full and natural on the Sundara. Treble is about the same in tonality. The real difference is the detail, soundstage, build and comfort. In those areas, the x55 outdoes the Sundara.

They're not as revealing as my Adam SP5 monitoring headphones but they're pretty close and the X55 is a much nicer headphone to enjoy music than the SP5. These are a good "one stop" solution if you want headphones for both studio and recreational music enjoyment use. And build quality seems excellent with a lovely premium tactile feel. Maybe the DT770 or Base Audio G12. Neither is true neutral, but the most neutral I've heard doesn't recreate hip-hop bass accurately. You may also want to consider the AKG K361 or 371. The 361 is supposed to be neutral, but it has a heavy AKG sound signature; the 371 is tuned to the Harmon Curve. I think the 770 is probably the most reasonable compromise, but these other options might be equally interesting.

"Studio Quality" means simply they took the effort in making them as flat as possible, nothing to do with the actual quality of the sound. As in the quality, a studio will look for in a pair of headphones is to hear the music the most "how it is". Studios also need a way to test bad speakers to test if they will translate to other speakers. The selling point of these is they put the middle upfront so you work on the meat of the song in the mid-range. Much like the effort of the Avantone MixCubes and the NS10's but they are also giving you the full range to make them an all-in-one type of headphone. These are not headphones to "flatter" your music. I find for this that the Avantone MixPhones do a better job of midrange mixing quilty with the "Cube" mode switch but aren't as good in the quilty of picking out things in the mix.

@Blue I did own a t5 Adam speaker and a Neumann kh120 and I loved both. But since November last year I replaced my Adams with hedd type 30 speakers. I'm a sucker for amt tweeters. Now I mainly use them. As for the sp5 in terms of speakers they sound a lot like the s series from adam, I auditioned them before getting the hedd speakers. They sound amazing nothing wrong with them, it's just the type 30 sounded more balanced to my ears.

I have the Adam SP5 and like it. Yes it is an Ultrasone headphone tuned by Adam and uses their odd S Logic technology so I guess if you don't like it you probably won't like these. However for monitoring I find them to be bright but extremely detailed and despite being bright I find them very accurate. Despite a low rent feel (especially for the high price) the actual build quality and durability seems to be superb. These are not my preferred choice for recreational listening (that goes to my D7200 and Nighthawk) but as a working monitoring tool I rate them extremely highly. The Zeos review was entertaining but I wouldn't take it seriously (Zeos is an entertainer, not a reviewer).

The x55 is a very colored-sounding headphone. It's definitely not neutral. But, it'll give you a lot of details--more than the vast majority of headphones. If you want an alternative closed-back, though clearly not with the same kind of detail and clarity, then you could try the Yamaha MT8, Beyer DT770, Rane RH50, NAD HP50. You didn't give me any information about what type of sound signature you want in your headphones or your budget. The TH900, D7200 and NDH 20 are definitely not neutral or detail-oriented. The TH900 has a very aggressive bass and treble; the D7200 has a V-shape as well, and the NDH 20 is warm-sounding and smooths out details. The Mobius is the last headphones I'd use for anything. It is among the very worst headphones on the market. Its 3D effect is a gimmick that no professional is using, and has a muffled, undetailed sound. The LCD-2 Closed is a warm-sounding headphone with elevated bass and recessed mids. You've been using headphones that have not been intended for studio work--and ignore Audeze's marketing. They lie all the time. If you want neutral, consider the Ollo S4R. If you want flat, then the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro is the flattest headphone I've heard--and it's quite boring. If you want something with a slight bass roll-off, slightly emphasized mids, and excellent detail, the Austrian Audio x55 is very good. You could also try the Denon D9200; it's not neutral, but close; it has more neutral bass than the other Denon headphones, but the treble is still a little emphasized.

The Ollo headphones are more flat-sounding. Separation of sub-bass and mid-bass is noticeably better on the x55; vocals stand out more on the x55; treble is slightly more accurate on the Ollo headphones, but the x55 provides slightly better treble detail. Soundstage is about the same among them. Comfort is substantially better on the x55, principally due to the over-ear design of the earpads. The Ollo headphones are really quite good for that specific need--eg, to get flat, neutral sound. Plus, the ability to easily replace parts for cheap is a huge bonus on the Ollo. I have no idea if Austrian Audio will let you buy replacement parts, or if you need to send in the headphones for adjustment or repair. This is an interesting time. @@NoThemeReviews The "amazing detail" you're hearing is massive lower midrange bloom. Even the AA guys knew their hard-M tuning was a mistake; their X60 and X65 more or less follow the research-backed Harman curve. To quote oratory1990, "I was impressed by everything but the sound."

@@warmlycalculated390 Yes yes, old news. And while you measurement fanatics drool over Oratory’s graphs and opinions, promote HT like it’s SO’s gift to humanity, nobody else really cares. You absolutely don’t have to like anything that doesn’t agree with your worldview. But you don’t get to call anybody who disagrees a lesser audiophile. Save that BS for the blokes shilling thousand dollar cables and Dac magic powers.

Are you planning a review of the Austrian Audio Hi-x25? No one seems to talk about them but if they are close to the x55s they could beat a huge amount of Bluetooth headphones.
