This is one of my favorite styles and I've never understood how the scarf stays put and doesn't slide off the hair. Now I know!! Thank you Janet!

Thank you very much for the research and for sharing - I took hints from this for a hairstyle to wear with my Regency dress. I can't do an exact copy at the moment, because I don't have such a comb; but I used the headscarf and tiny braid part, and it came out quite impressive, in the "looks about right" way.

Good Stuff. Recently took my son to the Napoleonic Donkey Convention in Downtown Vancouver and was inspired to braid hair in the olden style there. Very Good stuff.

Hi Iris, try twisting the hair very tightly so it collapses a bit, and if you fold the ends back, be sure that the teeth of your back comb are long enough to penetrate all the hair. good luck! J

Ooh, that looks lovely. Do you have any tips for people with longer hair? I haven't tried yet, but I know that if I twist my hair upward after making that french braid, the ends will end up on my forehead. Would folding the twist double hold?
@olgar1041

If it's not curly, curl the ends in very tight ringlet curls. If it is curly continue twisting the hair until it doubles in on itself and makes a small bun, stitch the bun in place using embroidery thread and a blunt plastic darning needle, arrange the curls to spill backward over the bun and add a comb for decorative purposes :)

I notice your model is using very red lipstick. Did women of that era wear colors like that? Thank you for your fascinating videos!!!
@jntvstp

Hi C! My model has naturally red lips, but i enhanced her a bit more it is true. Women during this time wore makeup more often than you might think, especially the french, since they had a long tradition of marking rank by rouge on the cheeks. Jan Franklin Hi Jan, I did not use period formulation makeup, and the costume was made using Folkwear Pattern #215 (empire Dress, historical version).

I would love to see an authentic Egyptian tutorial. I have been doing some research on this and the pleating in the clothing looks tricky. Have not seen how it was done, also I know wigs were very important and the cosmetics.

Did women ever wear their hair short? What if you couldn’t grow your hair long enough for the pretty and popular styles?

I’ve seen pictures of young women wearing a style called the Titus, which was in vogue during the early Napoleonic reign. Supposed to be based on the haircuts given to victims of the guillotine just before execution, or on the fascination with all things Roman.
