As a Mexican, many of my teachers encouraged me to speak both of my languages. I'm not a fan of people always bringing up race to get noticed. As kids we try to belong, " Mrs. Arce 'losing her culture' is a family issue not a society or white issue." I just feel that many white people are censored or their call racist when they have pride of their culture or race and that's not right. Shut, I have worst English with this lady and many people have accepted me for me and pulled ' victim card', I just put my head down and work and educate myself. Not trying to offend her but like I said, as a Mexican, nationalize 🇺🇸 , this brings the growth of Mexicans because 99% of us are hard workers and do things others don't want to do as jobs and other Mexicans become business owners, this country really provides opportunities if you grind. I learned English at 13 years old, and most people can’t believe I learned it just a few years ago because I “don’t even have an accent.” Not because I was trying to sound different or get rid of any accent, it just naturally happened to sound American because I was learning and being around Americans all the time lol just like at some point I started picking up on my friend’s puerto rican accent in my spanish (that one didn’t get far LOL🤣). It’s honestly upsetting to see that other immigrants didn’t have it like me and they grew up here their whole lives only to have an identity crisis later on in their teenage and/or adult lives. It’s like, because of society in the US, they don’t feel like they belong here, neither do they feel like they belong to their mother land because they probably have never even been there. I have been told by my hispanic peers that I was “hanging out too much with the gringos” and that I was a “fake mexican”, but that neeeever fazed me because they have absolutely no idea what it’s like to live in Mexico. I do, and I did for 13 years. I’m the one that knows both national anthems. I’m the one that knows all the singings for our Christmas traditions. The one that’s been under both school systems. So I understand them having the identity crisis I never had, because I’ve seen both sides and proudly stand for both. I love my gringo friends who have done nothing to hurt me, and I love my mexican friends for the same reason. I stand for the US flag, as well as the Mexican flag 🇲🇽 🇺🇸 and will always respect both!

The point is going over everyone’s little heads. ‘You sound like a white girl’ is a saying that actually most white people say. She is talking more about the dialect of the language. White people assume that when you speak professionally you sound like them which is apart of the issue. She also touches base on how in some parts of this country especially back in the day it was seen as wrong to speak your native language. “This is America we speak English”. Ones native language is a part of their identity. Obviously when speaking to an English speaking audience we speak English but I should be able to feel comfortable speaking in Spanish among my friends and family in public. Yes, she learned English but that’s not the point the point is the racism that is associated with in the English dialect. Other people are comparing experiences to other countries and she is sharing HER experience in this country because many people like me relate to her.

Do pay attention "In Śrīmad Bhagavātam (Śrīmad Bhagavāta Purana) Mahamuni Narada tells Pandavas how differently Sri Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) is worshiped. Mahamuni Narada says Maharśi (sages) reach out to Śrī Kṛṣṇa with respect and devotion, Pandavas show their affection as a relative and as a friend, Gopikas try to reach Him with love and Kama, Sishupala constantly invites His attention by cursing Him out of hate and enmity; through different approaches, all reach Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Paundraka (also known as Srigala Vasudeva), another king during the Dwapara Yuga, also hated Śrī Kṛṣṇa; rather than saying hated, he mostly wanted to be like Him, he desired to dress, walk and talk like Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He believed himself to be the incarnation of Vasudeva (Sri Mahā Viṣṇu). He mimiced Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s appearance and His gestures, and so constantly discussed Him with his staff and others. In a way, he was jealous of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and so wanted only himself to exist. When he went to war with Śrī Kṛṣṇa, even before they could fight, Śrī Kṛṣṇa burst into laughter and instead of fighting, He dissolved Paundraka’s physical form and unified him with Himself. In a separate version of the same story, Srigala Vasudeva was not a trained warrior and so was unable to battle Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He did amuse Śrī Kṛṣṇa with vain attempts but was eventually defeated. By behaving like and constantly thinking about Śrī Kṛṣṇa, in the end, he became one with Śrī Kṛṣṇa. (Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. 2018) The message in the above examples is ‘all paths lead to one Iśvara’. No matter which path, destiny is the same; however, there are some paths that are considered preferable. Bhakti is one such path, wherein there are nine approaches."

I was born in NYC to a working class family. My parents migrated to NYC during the depression era 1930s. My parents taught me the Spanish language at home. I learned my first English words from my older sister and my friends in the community. (especially in school). The result is that I am bilingual (English dominant). I was also taught to never deny my ancestral cultural roots and to be proud of my Hispanic Caribbean history. Later, I was also classified as an official interpreter during my stint in the military. I find that Hispanics that don't speak the Spanish language may suffer from an identity crisis. The negative impact of the identity crisis may vary from serious psychological problems (including drugs) to a non - significant lack of Spanish language skills. In the broader spectrum, one of the quickest ways for a Hispanic to alienate himself in Latin America is to say, "No hablo espanol". Especially if you have a Spanish surname. In some circles it could cause you a beat down. In conclusion, what impresses me the most about Ms. Arce's book is the possibility of her last name being famous. The Arce family in Puerto Rico is an influential name. They are well known for their cultural/ musical/political skills. Thanks to my parents' insight , I'm able to identify some of the influential community leaders from 2000 miles away. Thank you mom & dad!!!!!! Eddie in NYC 3/25/22
