As an autistic individual who struggles with sensory issues, it gives me so much hope to hear that these issues can spontaneously disappear overnight. In the same way it gave me hope to hear that anxiety is common for young adults but declines in prevalence and severity as people age. So there are things to look forward to.

Throughout my elementary school career, I had constant marks for “lacks self-control”. I never understood what that meant. I was also a happy child-oblivious to others perceptions. Fortunately for me, I was considered talented as a musician and artist. Those troubles were, I now understand, considered in that light. This brings me to your talents as a writer and communicator. You’ve mentioned writing a book about your experiences as an autistic adult. Consider doing so. I know it would valuable for many people.

My skills profile is certainly very spiky - good results for words and numbers but poor ones for practical / spatial skills. I dread practical tasks and avoid them wherever possible but of course avoidance - as in other areas - while it provides short-term relief just fuels apprehension and embarrassment. I can learn practical skills and am pleased when I do so but it's a very slow process and not helped if I have to do in front of others, especially if they give even a hint of frustration or bewilderment. Others need to realise that learning skills is a journey and it's reaching the final destination (or even just making progress towards it) that matters, not the speed.

I experience what you describe too, I can't do practical skills to speed and I get frustrated when others expect this of me.
