This car requires a different set of spark plugs to be installed when starting from cold than required to run at speed. Yes...changing 16 plugs on a hot engine prior to moving! I saw this car at Lime Rock several years ago - very impressive! And LOUD!

I read in well known motoring magazine a very long time ago a article about a 1938 auto union bought to England as it had no engine but on its arrival the task was rather daunting but one of the crew said in 1938 when was here where was garage and then discovered the property they arrived at the house a women answered the door which they explained if a bits and pieces might left. The explained well there is something in the cellar and there was under a very old cover a complete full engine assembly everything they wanted and the exact engine for the car. I would like to know who’s got it now ???

It's passes through a broad frequency range so it's less likely to have bolts come loose while doing warm up. It also checks your carb settings for response

From what I can understand, they had to get the oil up to a certain temperature that would allow it to run "thinner" and better lubricate all the running parts. And at the same time, they had to make sure the plugs won't oil up or the combustion chamber to be flooded with fuel. It's bad either way, even more so with the latter. These cars use a lot of methanol fuel, and leaving it idling for an extended amount of time might leave a lot of extra methanol flowing into the combustion chambers. If the combustion chamber gets flooded with methanol fuel, it'll flow down to the piston rings, wash the oil out of it, depriving it of lubrication and causing a piston to fail. Hence the tiny throttle blips. In short, it's a balance of trying to warm the oil up for the work the engine would do later on, while also trying to make sure that the combustion chambers won't get flooded with fuel.

Keeps the plugs clear and reduces fouling if you have cold plugs fitted.
