Moroccan-American independent filmmaker Hakim Belabbes presents “Autobiographical Strategies: Writing with Images.” This talk examines Belabbes' process of delving in personal stories to write, direct and edit his films and focuses on the idea of "framing" the usual and the mundane to look for metaphors of what is essential to us, through a specific point of view. The presentation includes clips from the Belabbes’ award-winning films.
Belabbes divides his time between Morocco and the United States. His film awards include the Grand Prix for In Pieces at the Moroccan National Film Festival in January 2011, Muhr Best Feature in December 2011 at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at the Bangkok Film Festival. He has served on the documentary jury of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival among others. Hailing from the small town of Boujad in central Morocco, Hakim Belabbes graduated from Mohamed V University in Rabat and obtained a graduate degree in Film and Video from Columbia College in Chicago where he now teaches film direction and production.
Hakim Belabbes’ residency in Honolulu is part of the Caravanserai 2012-2013 film residency tour. Caravanserai is a project that invites American audiences to experience the diversity of contemporary Muslim artistic expression through live performances with artists from the Muslim world. Caravanserai is produced by Arts Midwest on behalf of the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations with film and media programs coordinated by South Arts.
