Switched to HEVC encoding @ maximum 150Mbps bitrate in Virtual Desktop. In comparison to the H264+ codec @400Mbps there's now a softness to the image, like I've lowered the resolution a little. Video compression artifacts are now more obvious and showing on distant objects and fine detail with the lower bitrate.
The game is still playable even though the latency is still far too high, it's something I guess you could get used to. I'm not sure if you can pick it up on the video but the road surface has lost all its fine texture detail due to the video compression. Inside the headset you can see it blur in and out just above the bonnet of the car and while the car is stationary you can see it blurring in different areas.
Video recorded inside the Pico4 headset.
Please understand the context. I know you can get better latency by reducing the encoder resolution. I run the game around 3100x3100 per eye and my main aim is for a playable game but with great image quality. My HP Reverb looks beautiful and runs smooth at these settings. The Pico4 , as you can see, struggles with the encoding and has small stutters and / or image artifacts, along with the 45ms or more latency. FYI Godlike mode in Virtual Desktop encodes at around 3100x3100 pixels per eye,
