Dmitry L. has nice video called "How to capture ZOOMABLE waveforms with Pico 2204A, or Streaming vs Block Modes" following it, I found these limos for my picoscope 2204A. For pico 2204a you can show "properties" and see actual sampling rate. Max streaming sampling rate in slow timebase is 1MS/s per channel (if using 1 channel 1MS or more is selected, using both channels 2MS or more should be selected, selecting more makes no difference). You can also increase resolution to 12 bits, and this does not slow down streaming sampling rate, an the waveform gets much more detailed. Absolute best quality you can capture via pico 2204a is 1MS/s per channel, in 12 bit enhanced resolution. In picoscope specifications this limit is called "Maximum sampling rate (USB streaming)" In non-streaming mode you can increase sample rate by using only one channel or by using standard 8 bit resolution, but those two things dont affect max sampling rate in streaming mode. For some reason increasing time base over 1s/div, sample rate starts to drop in picoscope standard program, but it does not happen in picoscope automotive. I played around with picoscope automotive software and found that by deleting oem.dll file, and copy *.dll driver files from picoscoepe standard software, automotive will recognize pico 2204a, and work with it. Picoscope automotive should work with all non-automotive picoscopes. Only pico diagnostics did not like 2004a.

I just renamed the oem.dll with an additional extension and connected my 2406B and it is running normal. Tried with non-renamed OEM it and gave me non-compatible message. The only thing that I noticed at the top is that the application title does not have the "Automotive" name at the end of "Picoscope 6" but appears to work normal as it detects default waveform and activates the scope. Thanks for the tip as those sample wave forms from automotive help.

@@scientist100 Install both Picoscope 6 and picoscope 6 automotive. From picoscope automotive DELETE oem.dll. And from "Regular" picoscope 6 copy PS2000.dll and PS2000a.dll to Picoscope automotive folder. You can copy all other PS*000.dll files, then automotive software should recognize other series non-automotive picoscopes (3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 series). Both programs (regular and automotive) should work and recognize your 2406B.

Ramon, thanks so much, I think you said the 2000 series had a 20v limit. I think this is just a range limit not an input limit. The specs say there is 100v DC or AC overvoltage protection, which I think is the same as the automotive scope?

Another informative video. Thank you. What exactly does the attenuator do. Possibly a quick video explaining why it is needed and how it works for us novices looking to purchase a scope
@juergenscholl2843
6 жыл бұрын
Arthur Fricchione Scopes can only handle a limited voltage input level. If this treshold is surpassed the device itself may be damaged. To avoid this attenuators are used. They dimiinsh the input voltage by factor X, which can be 10, 20, 1000 etc. That way the scope can show higher voltages than its input limit directly would allow. To get proper readings the correspondent scaling adjustment has to be done via the scope's software.

Great video and appreciate it very much ... just one small respectful comment. It is often really hard to see what you are doing or clicking on, on the scope. So we rely on what you say/explain. When you say: "I'll see if i can get better resolution by aaah ... it shouldn't be but ... aaaah ... " it gets a bit hard to follow what you are thinking. Much easier if you finish the sentence :-)

Very good demonstration Ramon in comparing the two scopes! Just a few thoughts that crossed my mind as I watching the video. Probably best to send the signals separately to each scope instead of piggybacking them. The input impedance of both scopes are in parallel with each other when the signals are piggybacked. Each scope has an input impedance of 1MOhms and when they are in parallel, this would reduce the effective impedance of each scope which degrades the accuracy of the scope(s). The 2204A should be just fine for ignition waveforms, however it would suffer when looking at long time bases since it can only put 8000 sample points across the screen versus 32M points for the 4423 scope or for the 4425 which has 250M points. Also, the vertical resolution would suffer on the 2204A scope which has eight bit resolution for the A/D converter versus the 4423 or 4425 which has 12 bit resolution. Whenever I look at ignition waveforms Ramon, just right click on the screen and bring up the properties dialog. Look for the sample interval and while you're adjusting the desired time base, have your sample interval set to 1uS. Now you know that you'll have enough resolution to analyze the ignition waveforms. Once again, great video and should help folks out there who are considering the 2204A. Have a good one!

There are some controversial points here... 1. Two scopes in parallel do change the signal (the shape is almost preserved, though), but then both of them measure the same resulting signal with whatever accuracies the scopes have. So that makes a fair comparison. An even better test is to add Ch B and wire a switch from 12V to it. Press the switch, find the transition on both scope screens, compare what is shown on Ch A. 2. 8KS buffer of the baby Pico kicks in only at mid-length time bases as the software has to refresh the filled screen, cannot stream, and limits its sampling rate. For long time bases (e.g. 1 or 10s/div), put something really big (2GS) in the "Number of samples" field (setting often overlooked by users), and Pico will start streaming at 1MS/sec until you stop it. Sometimes inconvenient limitation, I guess... And you are totally right about monitoring Properties dialog. Ramon should make a video about it :)

I believe reading what looks like the peak kV can be a bit misleading. You can see that a certain peak kV seems to be being displayed at a a certain value, which is clearly visible on the screen, but the scope is showing up the "out of range" warning. In other words the real peak is not really visible, (it's off the sceen), because the timebase isn't zoomed in close enough to show the true peak, or the sampling rate isn't fast enough. In such cases I just keep raising the trigger level gradually until the triggering stops, then I know what value the scope is actually detecting, rather than what it is displaying. As regards to what multiplying factor to use in the custom probe equation, I think it is good to use a known reference as a basis to determine the muliplying factor. My method, (although I don't know how scientific it really is), is to use my probe to display a trace which has been gathered from my homes mains votage of 230V rms, then observe what the scope voltage is, and calculate a multiplying factor accordingly.
